We are finally supposed to be getting some snow. 6 to 12" in higher terrains. They are predicting high winds and on Lake Superior the forecast is calling for wind gusts up to 55 kts with waves ranging from 18 to 23 feet predicted.
We live in snow country, average 350" in a typical year and had a green Christmas this year. So completely out of the norm. Most people are rejoicing that the ski hills will be opening and snowmobilers will finally get to ride. That said, 6" for us is typically just a Tuesday in January so the winter "storm" warning is being scoffed at by the locals. It will be the winds that will make it tough to drive, etc., not so much the snow accumulation. There are areas that waves that large have the potential to wash out roads and bridges.
British Columbia, Canada. But only ~2 hours from the Washington border so not super far north. We get cold like this at least once a year. Usually it lasts longer than a couple days, so far we’ve had an incredibly mild winter and this cold snap will resolve by midweek.
Close to me but I'm on the Washington side! We're expecting similar temperatures. I'm so dreading it.
northern New England; we got about 8 inches of snow last Sunday FINALLY, then Tuesday night we got another 3 inches followed by about 2" of water which lead to some localized flooding. We are supposed to get another 1-4" tomorrow night followed by another rain storm. I HATE IT; WE JUST WANT TO SKIIIIIIII.
Uhhh nothing? I see rain (not a major amount) early Saturday in NYC, but only a 50% chance. Last storm it only snowed briefly and then all melted away a few hours later. I’ll watch the local forecast just to make sure I’m not missing anything.
I do know sometime next week it will be colder where my sister lives in MS than it will be here.
I hope everyone dealing with worse weather stays safe!
wait, wait, I maaaaybe take mine back? I was going off what I saw yesterday but now it's looking way less crazy. woo!
I looked this morning, then read your post was like.... oh no I missed something!
The weather looks crazy most other places. I hope everyone stays safe and warm!

Our predicted temps keep dropping 😩 I need to get some groceries today so I don’t have to go out Saturday in the worst of it. I have a list of baking I plan to do so the oven can help the furnace keep the house warm.

last year we had a cold spell for a week where it was not getting WARMER THAN -20 during the day. It was terrible. We have a poorly insulated/heated home and we had the downstairs heat set to 80 for DAYS and DAYS and it never got above 65 downstairs. Thank goodness the upstairs, where we sleep and eat, was better.
**after that we signed up to get an energy audit on our house, they come next week finally to tell us the most impactful ways we can increase our efficiency.

Same! I grocery shopped yesterday and definitely plan on using the oven a lot. I have to go out on Saturday for a bit but other than planning on staying home!

I can totally empathize! Improving my heating source and fixing the gaps/leaks are on my home improvement list for this year.
We've had about 6" so far...unsure of totals because my Apple Weather app says "0" 🙄🙄
It's supposed to get down to zero and below this weekend, which I'm totally fine with because we've had so many people fall through the ice so far.
It just blows my mind that people are out there already, considering how mild of a winter we have had. do they have a death wish?
My brother has been itching to go ice fishing, I thought for sure he would risk it last weekend. But he made good choices to wait! I think my SIL’s cousins were with him otherwise who knows.

I live in MN now. A couple of days ago we saw some people playing hockey on a pond right near open water. Ummmm…?
I'm in the northern suburbs and I've seen kids on little holding ponds in subdivisions out there skating. What are their parents thinking? It blows my mind.

There's a lake near my house that has a portion that literally never freezes (I'm completely unclear why) and people are always out snowshoeing or ice fishing and things on that lake and the kid in me that grew up on a lake cringes.
We’ve been up/downgraded to a legit Blizzard Warning and they increased snow totals to 7-14”. Sundays high is -6.
The library has already announced that they’re going to be closed on Saturday. They NEVER close in bad weather, as they know there are some people who go there for heat.
In central WA state we'll be hitting the lows 20s, teens & single digits for a week or so. This has been such a mild winter so far. It's been mostly low-mid 40s. That's Seattle area winter temps. In central WA it's unusual. Our norm is the 20s & teens this time of year. It's unclear if we'll get snow that actually sticks to the ground or not.
-40C/-40F with windchill here right now. Tomorrow is a low of -50C/-58 F
Brrrrr.
I just talked to a friend in Edmonton and she said they hit -40C this evening with the windchill. I'm at -26C and it was painful to run between the car and house.
We have cold snaps like this every year, but because this winter has been so mild it's hitting a lot worse right now. Until yesterday we barely dipped below 0C.

My dd is in Victoria and they are hitting -20C windchill. Crazy. Stay warm! Our company told us all to work from home tomorrow so I’m not planning to leave the house again until Monday.
ETA- my girlfriend is a postal carrier in Edmonton. She spent 5 hours outside today delivering mail!

It's been fluctuating. We're now set to get some rain overnight but I might not be in the band that gets a ton. I'd be worried about trees in front of my house thought because of ground saturation from the last storm, but luckily we don't have any that could threaten our home regardless of the direction they fall.

We're back to having a flood watch and wind advisory. I'd not freak out about either usually, it's just wind and rain, but our (finished!) basement has flooded the last 2 storms and I'm sure i'tll do it again tonight. So that's a fun new problem. (contractor coming out to look at it today!) And on the tree front....Our neighbor has a huge cherry tree on a slope above our house that drops a new branch every time there's a high wind lately. Luckily on the far side from the bedrooms - it'll "only" take out our covered side porch and kitchen and/or living room. I think. A few storms ago a branch came down and took out our front post light, would have hit our car but we weren't there.

I have a friend heading to Victoria this morning via the Tsawwassen ferry and she says it's freezing and windy.
Not sure how to link our embed a video, but here's a WSDOT ferry in Puget Sound the other day. It wasn't a normal route - it was being transferred to Anacortes and obviously hit rough water near the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

I am also in Victoria and it's very cold for us. Honestly, I prefer it to lashings of cold rain though. It's cold and sunny and reminds me of winter in Alberta. My colleagues are less thrilled about it than I am haha.
Near Lake Huron in northern lower Michigan, we literally had no snow for skiing, winter sports Christmas/NY week which was horrible for businesses here. Green Christmas=some businesses won't make it.
We got 5-6" of snow earlier on Tuesday.
Later tonight & Saturday Blizzard warning winds up to 50mph and gusts up to 60mph Up to 18" of snow.
Scared shitless of being without heat and power. Our neighbors just installed a generator so that's the good news. Our other 77 y/o neighbors are supposed to get married tomorrow. I assume, but haven't heard, if it's called off. Weather is so unpredictable here on the Great Lakes, so sometimes the weather is way wrong, but I don't like to underestimate it.

They keep bumping down our snow totals, but it's supposed to be really cold for here. Got like two inches of rain overnight and wind is kicking up (advisories the next few days).
If it's gonna be that cold, I want snow! /kicks rocks. Stupid Ohio Valley.
Kansas City south suburbs- 7” of very heavy, wet snow kept schools closed Tuesday & Wednesday. They went to school yesterday but the drive wasn’t awesome. Then today @ 5:30am they called us off for freezing rain. Roads are slick around us I’m told. We are off Monday and expect a weather closing again Tuesday for bitter cold.
The Chiefs will be playing possibly the coldest game in NFL history tomorrow night. Tickets are cheap and even that won’t prompt us to go.
You couldn't pay me enough to go to that game.
I did Soldier field back in my 30s at a sunny game with highs in the teens and we spent most of the game in the corridors huddled under the heaters. It was miserable.
high winds, snow, possible ice storm, and temperatures in the teens. Highly, highly unusual for Portland. I'm excited for the storm but worried about losing power as winds are possibly going to be up to 50mph tomorrow as the cold starts to funnel in from the east.
The wind is what I am really worried about. Nothing good happens when it's that cold and the wind starts. Hope you keep power!

We were supposed to fly to Buffalo, which wasn't supposed to get a lot of snow. Now the forecast looks a lot worse, with wind gusts of 50 mph, over a foot of snow (and more in the areas that see the lake effect). Our flight was cancelled as well as any alternate routes.
Weather will be really mild here (NC) this weekend.
