This is all so similar to my cousin’s ovarian cancer diagnosis. Terrible abdominal pain led to an ER visit where they saw a mass (and she found out she was pregnant). It was cancer, Stage 0 or 1, amazing, right? Well, the type she had is often found earlier and in younger women, but is insanely aggressive. And it recurred within 3-4 years, spread to her intestines, and ultimately killed her. Fuck cancer and fuck anyone who thinks they’d lie about this.

Liking for the bolded, not for the loss of your cousin. I hate ovarian cancer, and gynecological cancers in general (as you know).
Because even if it’s a “manageable” cancer, I imagine she’s still in a tailspin.
Exactly. I was told up front, even if hector (the name given to my tumor) is cancer, it’ll be taken care of with surgery alone. I’m still freaked the fuck out about it. I won’t know for a while what it is. It’s all a mindfuck.
I did not believe the doctors when they told us surgery alone would be enough for DD. And then when it came back and they told me the same thing, I still didn’t believe them. And then our awesome doctor, who we loved, pointed out that it’s not an either/or limitation on our situation. We’d do the surgery and if she needed chemo down the line, we’d do chemo down the line. And we (very thankfully!) didn’t need chemo.
It is DEFINITELY a mindfuck. We are almost 7 years out and most days I forget we went through it. I hope you are on the other side soon.
Knowing that this is what was going on makes releasing the doctored photo and "her" statement sort of but not really saying it's her fault that it was photo shopped eye poppingly awful. They just kept making it worse by lying and being weird. Which made it worse...for her.
I still don't know why it's assumed that it wasn't her that edited and posted the photo. I thought it was common knowledge that she considers herself an amateur photographer for family photos (I'm no royal follower and that's the impression I had).
I can see her wanting to release a "perfect" picture for mother's day.

I’m even more baffled by their PR teams now. It was important to get this right, and they could not possibly have made it weirder or worse. She was failed. Meghan was too, and Diana before them. Some of them must want the monarchy abolished by now, too.

I've been wondering this too. I also don't think the picture is THAT big of a deal. It was a bit weird, but so what. They are going through a lot these days and maybe just not thinking straight. I think news outlets make this stuff seem more dramatic than it is to get people to talk about it and get more clicks. I could imagine a scenario where Kate worked on the photo, didn't understand the implications, and she sent it to her social media person to post, and they posted it without asking a lot of questions.
Cancer diagnosis is a WILD process. My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer after a biopsy of a bump on her skull. My sister was “diagnosed” with likely stage 4 pancreatic cancer, then no just kidding, it’s bile duct cancer of an unknown stage, to finally stage 1 pancreatic. And we’re just a normal family. If we were the most famous family in the world, I would want to have that final answer before announcing too.
Having two immediate family members with cancer is not the thing I wanted to have in common with the BRF.

Yeah, they made a mistake and it wasn't great, but I really find it hard to believe this was as big of a conspiracy as people are making it out to be. We may never get answers, but I'm betting it was just a series of ignorance, inexperience, and miscommunications.

I didnt comment in here cause I didn’t come in to the thread for awhile cause I don’t follow the royal family but wow the speculation was wild! Millions of things can go wrong with the body so it could’ve been anything.
Now that I read what happened, it seems she was forced to make the announcement to get ahead of the story because they’re investigating that someone at the hospital tried to gain access to her medical records. I’ve def known employees getting fired for accessing or attempting to access celebrity records, which is so dumb cause digital stuff these days is so easy to track.
Anyway, my partner was very private about his bladder cancer last year and didn’t tell anyone, including his family, until his treatment was over. I don’t know much about Kate to know if she’s a shitty person or anything but in general people deserve to be able to keep their medical info and process it to themselves, even if you’re famous.
I also think this shows how little folks know about medical diagnostics and cancer diagnostics specifically. It really can take a while for someone to get a diagnosis even with the best of the best care. They may not have known what it was until fairly recently. For all we know, they released this a week after diagnosis. And no matter your fortune in life, getting that diagnosis is absolutely terrible and takes time to process. Her hands in that video are so nervous - I just want to hug her.
It doesn't explain why they released that blasted mother's day photo or why they let her take the fall for photoshopping it, her pr team still sucks. But they don't suck for giving her any time she needed to process this privately.
I had cancer a year ago and my mom was diagnosed 3 months after me so we did our chemo/radiation at the same time. It is also possible the pathology came back 7-10 days after her initial surgery. Chemo stops cell growth so she would need to be fully healed before chemo start. For me, it was 4 weeks and for my mom it was 6 weeks. If she had complications, it really could be this long before chemo starts. Also, if it is a slow growing cancer, there might not be a huge rush. I took 4 weeks after diagnosis b4 my surgery to prepare my family and then 4 more weeks for the chemo to start. Ovarian cancer can be very slow growing as lang as it is contained in the tubes (which is typically where it starts ). Once it goes outside the tubes, it grows like a bitch. Not saying that’s what she had, but it could explain the delay.
But they have people dedicated to doing this for them. It's their entire job. They fucked it up big time

There is no way they can claim ignorance or inexperience. It's an entire office dedicated to this. Will was born into it. Kate married into it so many years ago. The ineptitude is what's baffling. To be clear I don't think Kate was the driver in this.
She may not have known it was cancer initially. That's entirely believable and understandable to want it private. But don't fake shit. Surely someone on the staff has been on reddit once. Read a tabloid and knows how to avoid wild speculation.
Every single thing these people do is vetted, scrutinized, down to how she crosses her legs or waves hi. Whomever made these calls fucked up big time. And it's all avoidable

I assume, at the time of the MD photo they knew about her cancer diagnosis. Even if she did the photoshop why put it on her. They could have put out a neutral statement and not put her on blast. It’s just a photo. It was unnecessary and borderline cruel. Here Kate, we know you are dealing with a scary diagnosis, but we need you to know how you fucked up.
She was likely going to need to make the video at some point, photo or not, because she will not be resuming duties after Easter as originally planned. I agree that the medical record breach is the most likely impetus for right now vs at Easter, but it was coming.
Plus, who knows how her appearance might change once she resumes duties. She now has the sympathy of her nation, and much more grace afforded.

Kate likes taking her own photographs and releasing them. Maybe it’s one of the things she does herself to feel more ‘normal’.
Everyone was told we wouldn’t be seeing Kate until Easter, but all the speculation as evidenced by this train wreck of a thread went wild. Kate hasn’t been failed. She is one of the most important people in the royal family with a Father in law who is the King and has been pushing for significant change in the family for decades. She likely had a lot of input and wanted it kept private as long as possible. If anything she likely made the ‘mistakes’, but the thing is - they weren’t mistakes! She is sick and wanted a decent pic to go out. She didn’t do a pro job of editing it. Who cares? Every single thing that was said or done only fuels the fire.
Even now it’s being turned into an anti monarchy, ‘Kate being failed ‘situation. I don’t envy one of them - living like this must me exhausting whether people are for or against you.

This is the part that makes me so angry. You knew this young mom was diagnosed with cancer. You (maybe?) pushed her to release a photo and when it was questioned, you insisted that she take the blame. Fuck the BRF. At least now she knows for sure that she’s not really one of them.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

She 100% WAS failed. That's not an anti-monarchy statement, it's an anti-their horrifically bad press team statement. If girlfriend likes to play photographer that's awesome, good for her. But a media professional should have had both the knowledge and the balls to tell her sorry, we cannot send this picture to news outlets and explain to her why so she knew what she was letting herself into if she insisted on posting it on social media. Letting that photo get out wasn't just a 'mistake'. It was a mistake when they let her put out the other photo that's now been marked as edited (QEII with grandchildren), but doing the same again at a time when they know she's under heightened scrutiny was a huge fuck up. And who cares is the international news media who rightly have standards for images. Sure, in this case the edits are understandable, but they can't say "well this particular faked picture can slide because it's a nice lady who just wanted to celebrate a holiday."

I highly doubt she’s thinking that. She seems locked in for life by choice. All of this just goes with it. I agree with you, but the hardcore monarchist don’t see a single thing wrong here.

Was the photograph an official palace release or on Kate’s social media? I guess that would be the clarifying thing. If it was an official palace release then I agree with you. If she released it herself then who knows what happened.

The photo was posted on the official @princeandprincessofwales IG account. The caption implies she posted it herself/asked for it to be posted as it's signed "C," but that's why I said someone should have not only known it was going to be a disaster but had the balls to tell her in the event that they knew but didn't want to contradict her. I don't know how it got to the media, whether Kensington Palace sent it out or if media just reposts these things, but again, the people whose job it is to deal with the press should have known how it would go down.
No one is judging personal photos she put on a hacked finsta account here, these are things that have gone out through official channels.

I think you're expecting that the British royal family operates/follows the same rules as typical celebrities. They don't. There are oodles of sources on this that you can look for with 10 seconds of Googling if you're interested, but these people (royals and longstanding aides) do not adhere to the same norms as your average famous person and there are centuries of traditions, expectations, public funding/public responsibilities layered on top of just people being controlling assholes in general and having literal generations to entrench themselves in positions of power over those who marry into or are children within it. Expecting there to be any difference between an official palace release and Kate's social media is unrealistic. In Hollywood that wouldn't be the case, but this isn't that. She doesn't control anything. She's a cog. Historically a popular cog, and one who's positioned to be very influential, but a cog nonetheless. Nothing is released publicly that hasn't gone through many layers outside of her.

Also the bolded is entirely speculation, we have absolutely no idea what happened here. It's a shit show lol.

It’s a really difficult and sad situation. You have King Charles with a recent cancer diagnosis which happened very early in his reign and immediately following the mess with Harry and Meghan and the death of his Mother who was also the longest reigning British monarch and very beloved grandmother of the nation. One of the things I heard so much from everyone was “she was always there” because she had been the figurehead through multiple generations of Brits and for the most part, we liked her. Charles is liked considerably less. For a start he married Camilla who (very unfairly in my opinion) is still actively disliked by many (most?) Brits. Secondly he wants to change a lot about the monarchy including drastically reducing its size and all sorts of other things.
Just those event are massively destabilizing for the UK. Then you have this happen to Kate who is beloved. From my experience even people who aren’t into the monarchy think that Kate has done a great job in difficult circumstances. The only place I’ve heard negative stuff about Kate is on here. Otherwise people both in the UK and the States seems to like her and respect her. From what I have heard, she has a LOT more say into how she wants life to look than say Diana did. Not that it’s a free for all. Far from it. Things are done how they are done, but she is able to have a lot of input. What happened after she went into hospital and received a surprise cancer diagnosis is pure speculation, but I don’t see her as someone who was failed. I see her as an incredibly strong and powerful young woman trying to protect her family and there really being no feasible way to do that without speculation running rife. Any statement, photo or anything else would have been picked apart with wild accusations and conspiracy theories. Mistakes were made. Could have been the palaces fault, could be that there was no way on earth that mistakes could NOT be made if Kate hadn’t been forced, against her will , to make an immediate health announcement following her diagnosis. She wasn’t forced to do that. She was given the grace to decide how she wanted to proceed with telling her children and all of us in the public made it utterly impossible.
It’s a shame. I don’t think Kate was failed because I don’t think there was any way of winning with this. It was always going to be a shit show and not announcing immediately was always going to make it next to impossible to control. The person who made the decision to delay was, rightly, Kate herself and I’m glad the family supported her in that decision and gave her the space she needed despite the damage done in the media. If the firm had been in more control than Kate was, I believe the announcement of a cancer diagnosis would have come immediately whether she liked it or not.
I could be wrong of course - it’s just how I see it.

As American, I don’t understand how slimming down the monarchy would destabilize the UK? I thought they were just figure heads and didn’t hold any real power

I thought that as well-and learned from The Crown that isn't correct. The British monarch has all the power that they had in the days of Henry VIII and George IIIbut they choose not to use it.
The parliament needs the sovereign’s permission to open their session and the prime minister needs the sovereign’s permission to take office, even though they just won a democratic election. In theory, Elizabeth could have overturned Brexit vote. But they would never do this because of the tradition that’s evolved over the past 200 years also because the British public would freak out and demand a republic.

That in itself probably wouldn’t…. I think it’s probably a good thing - except when there’s a situation like this when senior royals are out of action due to sickness or something like that. It’s a combination of factors. Also if everything was going swimmingly with politics in the UK it probably wouldn’t be destabilizing either. But with Brexit, Covid the war with Russia and Ukraine and general mess that the UK is in politically having a constant like the Queen was a comfort to millions of Brits.
People, the reason why the AFP killed this picture was because it was photoshopped AND THEY LIED ABOUT THE DATE IT WAS TAKEN. It's the combination of the two that make this so bad. I don't think the press cares Charlotte's sleeve was altered. But it was clear Kate's head was swapped with an older picture. KP wanted her to look like the Kate before the surgery and chemo traitments and pretend everything was good.
