Some of you might remember I posted about our beloved pup being diagnosed with cancer back in November. I don't think I could bring myself to post that he passed in early December. I miss him so much.
Recently, we've been talking about maybe getting another dog. On Friday night, a random cat walked up to my front door at my lakehouse and basically demanded to come in lol. I know NOTHING about cats and am actually a bit scared of them. He kept meowing so much and looked really thin, and I'm the ultimate sucker for any animals, so I got some food and water and put it near a tree out front. He SCARFED it down.
In the morning, I saw he was sleeping on my deck. As soon as he saw I was awake, he was back to meowing and standing at the ready by any door so he could dart in, lol. Whenever my husband went outside, he became his little shadow. He was super friendly. I was sitting out on the deck and he walked up and jumped into my lap. I was kinda freaking out but tried to be cool about it.
It was obvious he had been someone's cat and very used to being around people. My husband saw there had been an email from our HOA 2 weeks back saying that a cat had been reported if anyone was looking for one and attached his picture. So we know he's been in the neighborhood for at least a couple of weeks. I called a local vet and asked if I could come see if he has a microchip. They sounded relieved I wasn't trying to dump him there. So I scooped him up in my car and took him over. They were swamped but really kind to give him a quick check over while they scanned him -- no fleas, looked healthy (aside from being thin), neutered. He did have a chip -- but it was registered to a breeder who sold him and the owners never registered him. The breeder said she'd look in her records to see if she could locate the owners ... though I suspect they dumped him in our neighborhood.
The vet also cautioned me not to post a found cat type post on social b/c he's apparently an expensive breed and people will claim him to make $.
I took him back home, got a litter box, scratching pad, some food and treats and have been basically googling every question about cats. First we just let him into the basement, but the persistent little furball got upgraded to the main house pretty quick, haha. He is so grateful. Saturday night he basically just sat by us and purred all night after he ate.
We haven't named him yet in part because I don't know if the owners or breeder will try to get him back. But in case you want to start thinking of names, here's a couple of pics.
That’s so sweet. I’m so sorry for your loss (our dog has cancer too 😟). I hope this time with your kitty guest is bringing you comfort and reminding you of the best parts of pet ownership. Whether your time together is brief or much longer.

Awww! I love this story! If you want to do a cursory search just to do your due diligence, PawBoost has a great search feature. My mom feeds a feral colony in our area and she has been able to reunite several newcomers who she can tell are pets using that site. You don’t have to post.
His face is amazing! I love that he is so loving and grateful for your kindness. If you ultimately decide not to keep him, please find a Savannah rescue. He will be easy to place!
So cute! I love the cat distribution system. If you want to locate the owner you could post on social media without a photo and be vague. Say the area he was found in, male, neutered, medium / large? size, and that he originally came from a breeder and you’d like the owner to send a photos to ID.
Oh my, he is handsome! I hope you are able to keep him...or if the original owners are found it was a complete accident that he ended up at the lake, not that they are jerks. I agree with the vet, I'd search for missing Savannah cats on social media, craigslist, etc but I wouldn't make a post about him.
This is pretty much how we ended up with our 3rd cat. He started coming by on Thanksgiving one year and was super thin so we started putting food out for him when we fed our other animals (we have livestock and he would see us out there with them and follow us up to the back porch). He was standoffish at first but quickly warmed up and it was clear he had been someone's cat at one point. After a little bit we posted on the neighborhood facebook page to see if he was someone's cat. After there being no matches we took him to the vet to check for a microchip (not chipped), so we chipped him, got him a full exam, and up to date on vaccines. He was already neutered, so we didn't have to do that. We left him as an outside cat (lots of barn cats in our neighborhood) but then we had a super hot July last year (30/31 days above 110F) so we brought him inside and he just never left. He was clearly someone's cat before, but we couldn't find the owner. The cat distribution system worked out well for us...we love him, he's super spoiled, and he seems to love it here.

Gosh he is gorgeous! If you do wind up keeping him, I would make sure you do some research. Some states require permits to own them and illegal in others areas, depending on their filial generation. Did the vet or breeder mention that at all? For example, an F1 savannah is a domestic cat bred with a African Serval and are less suited to live with kids or other small pets. They can be hard to own. The further you get away from the original generation the tamer they will be, but either way they will need a fair amount of exercise. He doesn't look F1 so I assume he is a few generations out.
They can be a lot like dogs though! They will play fetch and like to play in water
