It’s so easy for all these white male talking heads to call for Biden to step down because it’s a win-win situation for them. He loses and they get to say “I told you so” while not losing any of their rights or suffering any real consequences. He wins and they can say we got lucky and blah blah blah. Fuck all the way off.
Right?! You know who is calling for Biden to stay in the race? Most members of the Black Congressional Congress.
YUP. You can bet racism is behind a LOT of these calls for Biden to step down.

Because Harris is next in line?
Yes. I’ve seen very few people who are calling for Biden to exit the race who are also calling for Harris (the logical choice and the most qualified candidate) to step in instead. They’re worried Biden won’t finish his term and we will have a Black and Asian woman president. It’s racism with a side of misogyny.
Unbelievable. We can’t catch a break. He had such a great speech yesterday in Vegas too.
This is not surprising at all. Covid level are high in multiple locations across the US and they are trying to pretend Covid does not exist. They are not trying to prevent transmission. If they were, all senior officials/staff/etc would have started wearing respirators when the 2nd Gentleman tested positive. None of that happened.
The administration continues to disappoint and is an embarrassment when it goes to Covid. The only surprise is they admitted Biden has it.
The big picture: Only a handful of Democrats have the influence to persuade Biden to quit — starting with Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
In at least one conversation since the debate, Pelosi conveyed to Biden and his campaign the political peril that Democrats face if he remains atop the ticket. Schumer had a "blunt one-on-one conversation" with Biden on Saturday, in which Schumer "forcefully made the case that it would be best if Biden bowed out of the race," ABC News' Jon Karl reported.
The intrigue: Those interventions came last week, but didn't leak out until yesterday.
Late last night, The New York Times reported that Biden "has become more receptive" to hearing arguments about why he should drop out — even asking questions about how Vice President Harris could win.
Then came news the Democratic National Committee is delaying its plan to nominate Biden in a virtual roll call weeks before the Aug. 19 convention, following backlash from rank-and-file Democrats who want more time to address concerns about the president's age.
Semafor reported that Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, co-chair of the Biden campaign, privately told the president in Las Vegas yesterday that donor cash is drying up.
House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has conveyed his own private warning to Biden, as many of his Democratic members have expressed fears of the down-ballot impacts of a Trump landslide.

I find it pretty rich coming from pelosi and schumer, 2 old fucks who should have stepped aside long ago to make room for new generations.
We honestly deserve to lose. But the stakes are so high we cannot afford to lose. Can I time travel to when we know the results in the next 5 years? I just don't want to live through the turmoil and angst.

Under President Joe Biden, unemployment is down. Inflation is down. Wages are up. The DOW is the highest it’s been in years. He has erased student debt. He has reduced crime rates. He’s brought down insulin prices.
14 million people voted for Joe Biden in the primary. He is our candidate. These wealthy elites are trying to throw away our votes. Many high level Democrats and groups continue to back him including Hakeem Jeffries, Ilhan Oman, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Gretchen Whitmer, and Bernie Sanders, as well 17 different unions, many youth activist groups, and a bunch of prominent people on Black Twitter.
I’m with them and I’m with Joe and Kamala. Any other choice will lose this election in November. Democrats need to stop with this chaos and back the candidate we chose in the primary.
The only thing that gives me pause is that the top Ds would be working with Biden all the time, and maybe they're seeing something in the day to day that we aren't.
Still, we've thrown away this election with all this *waves hands*. There's no recovery even with another candidate.

i am here.
Like, they ought to know what a fellow old who is actually too old looks like. and it's not like they don't see him day to day...so maybe it's really that bad??
But JESUS H CHRIST JUST....FUUUUUCK.
I'll be all over voting for Harris instead if that's what we're doing, but i just can't believe we're here. how are we here??? I was ready to Weekend At Bernies it up and just accept a doddering figurehead if that's what we were going to get when there was also a chance of somebody I think was doing a pretty good job on many things could keep doing it. I just wanted us to TRY winning. Like, TRY pointing at all the shit we've accomplished and all the good his administration has done and see if maybe our country could actually pull their collective head out of their asses and not send us down a poopchute of terror and despair. But like...nope. We're going to crank the chaos level on this up to 11 and strap in.

This is what I don't understand. If voters chose him in the primaries, how can they just sub in someone else? Even if he steps aside at this point, doesn't it have to be Kamala since she's on the ticket that people voted for?

They can’t sub in anyone, including Harris. Delegates are currently bound to Biden because he won the primary.
Now, if he steps aside, which he has repeatedly said he will not do, then we would head to an open convention if the delegates couldn’t coalesce behind a single candidate, which would be chaotic, confusing, and absolutely contested by Republicans. We would absolutely 100% lose under these circumstances.

No, primaries are non-binding because they're run purely by the parties. A party can nominate whoever they want outside of the primary votes.

No, this isn't true. Primaries are just a show of good faith within the party themselves.
The primary serves as a measure of public opinion but is not necessarily binding in choosing delegates. Sometimes the Party does not recognize open primaries because members of other parties are permitted to vote.

Right, but as the NPR article I linked belatedly states:
Delegates to the convention are currently “bound” to Biden because he handily won the primaries and caucuses earlier this year. And while Biden said they are free to do whatever they want, the DNC rules say “all delegates to the National Convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them.”
The primary question came up a lot during the 2016 election because of Trump. Before they started following him in lock-step, there was a lot of upheaval internally about supporting him.

Correct, but legally they don't have to, and if the party chooses not to they can change the rules.

If the delegates decide to break precedent and nominate someone else while Biden is still in the race, it would be a complete shitshow. I am hoping they realize this.
Also, the primaries were a sham..... look at how low voter turn out was, look at how few states participated, and there were no real challengers to Biden despite the fact everybody under teh sun was begging for somebody besides Biden.
Yesterday's AP poll, showing nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, ricocheted through the White House and Congress.

neverfstop - are you really saying the work many Black Americans put into the effort to elect Joe Biden is a sham?
As recently as March you were touting all his wins. Are you really going to let a poor debate and a media that is being funded by deep-pocketed racist Republicans influence your perspective?

No, I am not. I am saying the primaries in 2024 were in no way fair, democratic, or reflective of what most people wanted.
This is not just about the debate. I think he's done a great job & surrounded himself by people who have done a great job. I don't think he's the best candidate to beat Trump. I think the Dems should be shouting from the rooftops all that the Biden-Harris administration has done, and that the Dems need to win in the white house & congress to keep delivering on their campaign promises.

what I think the dems should REALLY be shouting about is Project 2025. particularly the veteran stuff. that might sway a lot of right-leaning people and undecideds.
