I fully believe that if Biden drops out, we will lose in a huge way.
100%. This thread is very telling I think of the bubble most of us are living in. If I did a survey of people I worked with or friends from HS/college Id say the overwhelming majority would have no idea who Whitmer or Buttigieg even is. Expecting democrats to fall in line and come out in the numbers needed behind a new candidate that most wouldn’t know much about in only a few months is a huge ask, and I just don’t think it would happen.
At this point if Biden died tomorrow and they had someone standing behind him waving his arms around like weekend at Bernie’s until the election, I’m voting for him. And I really wish our elected party officials would stop publicly commenting on wanting him replaced and instead turned every question about Biden into a conversation about the Supreme Court.
I fully believe that if Biden drops out, we will lose in a huge way.

Exactly.
As an example of just how limited knowledge the average person has of political figures, when Colin Powell died, I came into the office and mentioned it to a younger colleague who works in public policy.
She asked if that was the guy on American Idol (Simon Cowell.)
Let me reiterate. She works in public policy. Now, she is younger and that could explain a lot, but I just don’t think the vast majority of Americans are tuned in.
Besides that, there is not a single candidate with enough name recognition or money to back them to come in four months before an election and pull it off, let alone get on all the ballots. Kamala Harris is literally the only person who would have a chance and I do not think she would get the support she needs because of racism and sexism.
At this rate, all Trump has to do is sit down and shut up and he'll win. I hate him so much. And I'm not a fan of stupid 84 year old Nancy Pelosi today either.
I’m at a loss for what is happening. I fully believe in a free press. I trust most legitimate news sources. I think I’ve been smart enough to decipher the legitimate and sincere ones, even if it’s news that I don’t like. But this is incredible. The media is so rabid right now with this. Even if it is a true concern, even if there are important people questioning things, the media is on a fucking rampage. I don’t like this at all

Let’s be clear: The wishful benefits of a contested convention or a late-stage exit are vastly outweighed by the potential harm. President Joe Biden has the integrity, moral character and record needed to beat Donald Trump in November. Our path to victory lies in standing by Biden and understanding the high stakes of this election.
And
The anti-Biden doom loop feels loud right now, but it is largely a phenomenon among those who obsessively follow the news or want to make the news. Most of the voters Biden has won and needs to win again already know his foibles — and they aren’t turning in droves to say, “I’m now voting for the bombastic fascistic liar.”
I am unclear on how this will play out but being an underdog is not a bad place for Biden to be in right now? I wonder if his team is hoping for a "rally around the president" moment. Biden vs Hollywood elite George Clooney might make him more relatable to many voters. And truly, Clooney didn't say anything bad about Biden, just that he is old. Maybe Biden's team will lean into the "the president had our backs, it's our turn to have his".

For those who find history a predictor of the future, all incumbent presidents who were losing in the polls after the first debate went on to lose the election. I think that’s what has a lot of people really concerned.
The racists and sexists are mostly voting Trump anyway, so I don’t think Kamala at the top of the ticket would reduce the number of people voting blue. But that ONLY works if Biden were to step out of the race on his own and put all of his name recognition and reputation behind supporting her. I agree the media circus on this is ridiculous, though.

I think his team was hoping it’s a new cycle/shiny object and everyone will move on but they won’t.
On a positive front I guess, Biden is getting a ton of coverage now and people need to see him. I have CNN on all day. All everyone got before this was Trump 24/7 like 2016. Maybe if Biden has good moments the non stop coverage will help and they can use it towards their advantage. I mean at this point I’m looking for anything to help us. He has a presser today. I think Trump is gonna start to get nuts which he usually does when the news isn’t focused on him.

I've been wondering about this too. I think part of the reason Trump does well is that he dominates the news cycle. Right now, it's all about Biden. What's that expression? All press is good press? Maybe all of the attention could turn out to be a positive.
I think the current coverage helps Biden. Keeps him in the news and he’s doing well — his NATO speech was solid, voters can see him doing work and not just campaigning. I’m not sure that many people care what George Clooney thinks 🤷♀️

The infighting is EXACTLY what the Rs and Heritage Foundation want. Dems in Disarray is how they got us in 2016. We moved mountains to beat T in 2020. Now we're back to the same thing in 2024 but with the lessons learned and strategic moves made by the Rs and their ilk. We need to band together and get Joe over the finish line and win back the House so we can begin putting legislation through that puts all the BS to rest.

Which is why the Rs have been pushing the "Biden is so old" and "Biden only promised one term" narrative for a while... which obviously worked see all the other posts in this thread.

Should people really be that concerned about him being old? I thought that was literally why we have Harris. I mean, if Biden's running mate was somebody like Sarah Palin, I'd be concerned about his age and health (and sanity), but considering how I feel about Biden and Harris, I'd certainly be sad for his family if Biden kicked the bucket while in office, but I'd still feel the nation was in fine hands. What I do wish is that we could add a vice vice president to the ticket. Because congress.

I people worry about another Ronnie situation where he had alzheimer's pretty strongly toward the end of his terms. I'm not worried about Biden, yet, but in the next 4 years he could decline rapidly and refuse to step down. But, still anything is better than tfg who I think is showing worse signs of declining cognition in addition to being a horrible person.

Yes, I think people have the right to be concerned. I don’t think most people are worried about him dying, moreso his health while he’s alive and running this country.
You know how developmentally different a 1 year old is vs a 5 year old? Well as we age changes can happen rapidly like they did when we were young. Like I mentioned above there is a reason that certain professions require you to retire at a certain age.
Overall he did a super job with that press conference.
I wasn’t able to watch it, but this is good to hear.
He made a few gaffes, but he caught and corrected himself quickly. Predictably, the media jumped on the gaffes, but he it’s clear he still has a strong grasp of both domestic and foreign policy.

I have been feeling so frustrated about the media continuing to talk about this ad nauseum. NPR is talking about it every time I turn the radio on. COME ON GUYS, PLEASE DO BETTER. It is making me all panicky.

I'm not actually personally worried about his ability to govern. I don't imagine that the President actually runs everything themselves--it's mostly advisors and staff doing the day-to-day stuff, and I think Biden is fine to make big decisions if given enough time and space. If Biden is incapacitated, Harris steps in, no problem.
I am purely concerned from an electoral point of view. Biden's age is *perceived* as a problem by a lot of low-propensity voters, and we need those voters to turn out. We can't afford for our candidate to be seen as just another grumpy old man, because low-information voters won't see the difference between the two. We need to draw a contrast between our candidate and the GOP's. If Biden could do that, I'd be fine with him staying in the race, but so far he hasn't been able to.

Biden has never been a very good public speaker. He just hasn't. I don't know if anyone remembers, but there was a bit of panic when he was picked as Obama's VP because he has very strong "foot in mouth" syndrome. Now is some of this age related? Probably, but some of it is just him.
