Figure we could keep this going through the end of the Olympics and Paralympics. The opening ceremony is not until Friday but soccer and rugby matches start today!
I don’t think there is really any way to keep this spoiler-free, so everyone should just do what they need to do if they don’t want spoilers.
Today, the 2030 (French Alps) and 2034 (Salt Lake City) Winter Olympics hosts were announced:
Interestingly, SLC officials had to sign a revised contract allowing the IOC to rescind the Games if US doping officials continue to question or investigate WADA (there’s been a scandal this year surrounding Chinese swimmers).

Update on Arg v Morocco…The said the final Arg goal was offside and not allowed. They have now brought the players back out and are playing in an empty stadium. They played about three additional minutes.
Thanks for posting and letting us know this actually starts a few days “early.” I just put soccer on and am watching with my dad. When we found out about his stage 4 cancer almost three months ago, making it to watch the Olympics seemed like a pipe dream, but here we are! I would otherwise be hosting a big Olympics party at home this weekend, but instead am dutifully prepping nutritive snacks and managing toilet breaks. At least I brought a few flag plates and napkins so we can party in our own way.

"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I'm super excited about watching hockey - I support both England and the US. (And, yes, I mean field hockey but in this country hockey = field hockey). I played for over 30 years in both countries so it's so much fun to watch at a high level. I can't see the first game on Saturday as I'll be out, but will be watching on Sunday.

I'm 6 hours ahead of Paris, so that should work out nicely for my night owl insomniac self. Now, I'm off to find the best online sources.
I can vpn to anywhere, so any suggestions are welcome. 2012 I relied on bbc iplayer, but that was when it was in London. I'm not sure if that's still the best. I also had cable back then with a million channels, so I didn't have to wait for the primetime shows which I really dislike (sorry, bob). That was when I fell in love with vball and wanted to watch the entire match.

Same same. (Well my only “playing” in the UK was travel but I played in college and beyond here). It’s the one sport aside from women’s soccer that I still feel very connected to the player. I can’t wait!

Olympic men’s soccer opened with a match that devolved into chaos A match between Argentina and Morocco in Saint-Étienne, France, was roiled by fans on the pitch, a two-hour delay and a disallowed goal.
Japan will receive their silver at the same ceremony. Bronze will not be awarded yet due to ongoing challenges as to whether it will go to Canada or Russia.

In a Dutch newspaper I saw the Dutch team captain was saying the bus drivers who drive athletes to their events don't know which stadium to get them to and there is a lot of chaos. Also, there is not enough food for all the athletes in the Olympic village, especially later in the evening. The Dutch have bought 5 microwaves and there is a truck with frozen meals on the way from the Netherlands. I hope the Paris organizers can step up their game when things are kicking off for real tomorrow.
ETA: Apparently the British also complained about meat being served raw and they brought in their own chef.
“Coaching staff and contractors working with Canada’s men’s and women’s national soccer teams have been engaged for years in efforts to film the closed-door training sessions of their opponents, including during the women’s gold-medal winning Olympic tournament in 2021, two sources with first-hand knowledge of the activity told TSN.”
“After TSN published an initial version of this story, Canada Soccer chief executive Kevin Blue wrote in a statement that head coach Bev Priestman had been removed from her position for the balance of the Olympic tournament. Blue wrote that the federation had obtained new information regarding previous drone use against opponents that predates the 2024 Olympics. The Canadian Olympic Committee said that Priestman had been removed from the Olympic team.”

If there is one thing that world class athletes take seriously, it is food. I can’t believe they got the food wrong. It’s not the place to skimp or, to be honest, try to lower the carbon footprint. The result is a million new shipments of microwaves and frozen meals so. Or exactly working as expected on the carbon footprint front.
The Village has a food court in the main area but competing athletes eat so much chicken and vegetables. It’s absolutely shocking to me that they didn’t prep well for that.
