I was talking with my dad and I was saying I’m super fired up but if Kamala wins this year, what happens in 4 years? 8 years? Are we going to have to fight to save democracy every four years until the end of time?
My dad thinks once Trump passes the extremists will crawl back into the woodwork. I’m not sure though, they might not be as loud as they are now but I don’t think they will ever go away. There will be someone standing by ready to lead the cult when he dies.
And I'm very hopeful with the younger generations who are not here for this shit. My 15y/o, whose had a mild interest in politics over the years is ALL IN on this election. Like, he talks my ear off daily and breaks news to me I haven't even read yet. Me and my friends definitely weren't into politics at that age but this generation is different.

My 14 year old is the same. She's pissed she can't vote. My friend's son turned 18 a couple weeks ago and the first thing he wanted to do was register to vote so he could vote (at the time) for Biden.
I don't know. This has been the Republican fever dream since Reagan. They've (regular voters) signaled that this is who they want in power. So it won't be Trump if Trump keels over, but it will be someone like Gaetz, or MTG or someone else just as despicable.
I think it’ll be hard for them to have a standard bearer with the same pull that Trump has, but it’s going to be a long time before the extremists lose power and influence.

I think someone else will take up the mantle, unfortunately. I think that most of these people are relieved not to have to hide their real feelings anymore.
But it does seem like fewer in the younger generation are falling for the bullshit. I know a lot of teens who are really engaged and involved and many are breaking from their Republican parents over this. Hopefully they stay firm in that resolve and opinion as they grow up, that’s how we break this nightmare.

Not entirely sure. I think Trump gave people “permission” to let their racist and sexist sides really come through and I don’t see that going away. Its become cult like though and without Trump I do think some will come to their senses.

Every generation says this. Spoiler alert, Millennials were supposed to save us. Instead they just don't vote.

There were plenty of people that wanted nazi Lindburg to be pres. I'm not at all coninced something centuries old will go away, but I do think it might be quieter for awhile without a loud asshole shouting.
I see it as having 2 parts, the political aspect and the social aspect. The political part was around before Trump, (see Tea Party and Palin). I actually think that will die down a bit—Mitch McConnel is already trying to distance himself from that (I think he is heavy into trying to rehab his image on his way out the door so that he doesn’t go down in the history books simply known for the past 8 years). I think the party will lean heavy into the “We’re just normal Reagan Republicans” for the next election cycle. The party will lean away from the doom and hate and lean into the “City on a shining hill” Reaganism because they will see that an uplifting message worked for Harris.
BUT, the social part of MAGA? That will be here for a while. Changing a political platform is easy—you just do what you think will win. Changing what’s in people’s hearts, not so easy. And that didn’t start with Trump. He just made it ok to be open about it. I do have hope for the future. I see my kids generation. Their friends and the kids I see on the news (Parkland activists) are making a difference. I think we’re stuck for a while, until most of the Boomers die off. But I like what I’m seeing from Gen Z.
The MAGA peeps aren't going away, but they'll eventually get a new mouthpiece.
I sincerely hope that the Republican party splits after this election cycle. The "normal" Republicans will not want to be associated with these crazies forever.

The problem being that we're really tied into a two party system. So splitting the R party means two minority parties who are destined to lose to the Ds until they can find common ground again.
Yeah, I didn't think we can count on the next generation here. Of course there are lots of amazing youths, but also many who either don't care (enough to vote) or are being radicalized online. Isn't the men's rights movement growing, including among youths?

I think people have grown tired of the division. I think it will fade with time. Not as fast as I would like to see, but I think there is a real desire with most americans to find common ground.
There is always going to be a extreme subset. And the way our politics are financed doesn't help us to not pick sides, find the most extreme view etc.
Eventually the republican side is going to have to realize they actually have to show results, have a plan etc. They can't just exist on rhetoric forever. People will demand more eventually.
I actually think the democrats dramatically changing course and unifying behind Kamala is going to push the issue even more. We have one side that made a change and is now stronger for it. The other side has no plan and keeps just doing the same divisive stuff without results.

Y'all hope killers vis a vis the next generation are really pissing in my cheerios thus morning.
Look - We just need to save ourselves and fight the good fight here and now.
The current kids are not going to usher in an utopian ideal because they're just plain old humans like the rest of us with their own issues. There are more decent people than shitstains in the world though, we have to stay motivated and keeping doing what we can because everything is a cycle and we're never going to eliminate the existence of fear and selfishness, and the shittains who ride those to power., but that doesn't mean they have to win.
They'll for sure have an other cult leader step up. But I don't know that they'll have the ability to truly get everyone to fall in line like he does. Nor do I think they'll be able to dodge the lawsuits like he has been able to (until now). Marge and Gaetz are messy messy messy, and I don't know how effective they are at actual action. They're very loud and present in the media, but I don't know that they can draw in the billionaires behind the scenes to keep this going like he did. Would the old rich dudes of the party, and the ones who have been in power forevvvvveerrrr (think Turtle and Graham) step up to back someone like them? I'm not so sure. I think of my in laws - all ins on trump (until just recently), will never never never vote democrat, but can't stand most of the theatrics and currently happening in the republican party. They're not part of the 30% ride or die MAGA, so people like them just won't vote.
@@@
As for the youths, Gen Z has something the millennials didn't, when they came of voting age - tik tok and complete integration into social media. They also are watching THEIR rights being literally taken away from them, and about half of them have had no say in it, because they were old enough to watch and know what's happening, but not old enough to vote. My daughters are 16 and 13, and are PISSED. The 16 year old has already pre-registered to vote - our SOS sends out pre-registration forms to kids as they get their drivers licenses, so it's automatic when they turn 18. She can't wait to vote. So I don't know that the kids will necessarily save us, but the ones who are paying attention are ready to go.

I am not eating bon bons and just crossing my fingers until today's middle schoolers can vote.

of course you're not. this is 50% me hyping myself up because it's never going to stop and that's depressing.

Sorry, not sorry. The reality is that Millennials need to get off their fucking collective asses and actually do something. Not fawn all over the "kids" and how they're going to be the ones to change the world. We're out of time. There is no more "hopeful tomorrow".
