While my first instinct is to say “no cookies for you” to former Trump voters who are voting for Harris, I’m reminding myself that as a 49-year old woman, I’m dramatically different than the person I was at 19 and I hope when I’m 79 I can also look back at my 49-year old self and say I continued to grow.
So while I’m still furious at the people who gave us a Trump presidency, I’m also deeply aware of the disinformation campaigns and apathy that put us there and incredibly grateful that some (and hopefully many more) are leaving their echo chambers and choosing someone different this year.
I haven't watched a ton of this but I have been SO impressed with the speeches. I was surprised at how emotional some of them made me. Both Obamas were fire. Pete was great. Walz did a great job. One thing is for sure, regardless of who wins, the outcome of the election is going to make me cry!

Whenever I get disgusted at these former Trump folks (which is often), I try to remember my friend Liz. Liz is a teacher and a wonderful human being with two girls. She does not follow politics at all. It turns out that in 2016 she voted for Trump and was completely unaware of the Access Hollywood stuff and the racist rhetoric. Her only thought in the voting booth was, "He's not a politician, so if I vote for him, it'll be sticking it to the establishment." She lives in my hometown, which is quintessential Trump country, and was surrounded by people insisting that Trump would bring jobs back to the Rust Belt.
When he won, of course, she started paying closer attention and became horrified at her lightly made decision. She's deeply embarrassed and will spend the rest of her life trying to make up for what she did. But I can see how a busy person without a lot of media literacy--a person who works twelve hours a day and barely has time to eat most days--could get confused, especially if they aren't watching/reading the news at all.
I'm finally watching speeches while I WFH today, and I can't see my screen because I keep tearing up. It's all just so good.
ETA: I'm only on day 1, but oh man, HRC's speech. She was just so classy in how she addressed 2016, and in acknowledging the progress that's been made and the work still to do. The echoes of George Washington's farewell address in Biden's speech were good. I think what really gets me in the feels is how apparent it is in everyone's speeches how much they love this country while recognizing its flaws.
I follow politics but am honestly not as into it as most people on this board. I hadn't really ever heard Walz talk, just took everyone's word for it that he's good people.
I just watched his speech from last though and am obsessed. My golden rule is also "mind your own damn business", and I just in general found him to be the most authentically relatable politician I've heard from in years. I adore him (and Gus, OMG).
This whole convention has been a cavalcade of people I want to see as president one day.
This convention, and really the shift since Joe stepped back and put Kamala first, has proven that there are good good leaders in the Ds and there is a strong future. How many times, even on this board, did people say "I don't want Biden, but who else is there? The dems haven't done a good job of raising up the next group of leaders." I see Kamala already elevating other leaders so there is a good option for the next president and beyond. It makes me excited about the long term future, not just that we seemed to have turned a corner for this election.
Just caught up from last night. This Walz pick was such a great choice. He really has changed it with the Joy and Weird. Small words but so damn powerful. Kamala just saw something in him and he’s been perfect.

I saw some news commentator say they thought it was the greatest VP speech at a convention in a generation and I kind of think they were right.
I just don’t understand how anyone can see all of this joy and go, nah, I’m going to go with the hate.

Because "we're voting to protect our daughters" (aka homophobia, transphobia etc. etc.), not thinking that someday their daughters may have trouble conceiving, may have GYN issues, may want to adopt a child and so on and so on.
Honestly I can't fathom how people can still believe in the R's as the future. Is it just because I have someone in my family with cognitive decline, but how do they not see TFG won't make it through 4 years and it WILL get worse with the other bozo if he's not off the ticket. TFG ain't that much more mentally healthy than Uncle Joe, and it's quite apparent.
Preaching to the choir, I'll sit down now.
ETA: I'm not voting for TFG, however I wish both of the old white dudes the best in their cognitive care as dementia is a horrible, nasty thing no person or family should have to go through. Again we all know TFG should step aside and let someone better take over.
I couldn't stay up for a 2nd night last night, so I watched just watched Walz's speech today. SO GOOD. Initially I'd been in favor of Kelly for VP, and I'm sure he'd have been good, but Walz is nailing this. There were so many good sound bites from that speech, on banning books vs. hunger in schools, on reproductive rights, on guns. So well done.

I saw this meme yesterday (I know...) that said something to the effect of "it's ok to say you were previously uninformed and have changed your mind." I'm not sure a lot of supporters of TFG were exactly uniformed but I appreciate the sentiment.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Agree with most of this, but I will reiterate I do not believe Joe has dementia or any other atypical decline in aging. While I am not a doctor or an expert, I do work in the dementia field and lost a grandmother and step grandmother to Alzheimer’s. This is not that.
I wasn’t excited for Oprah at all but she looked great and I liked her speech
But im not sure she is the right person. She inflicted oz and Dr Phil on us. But I guess she’s targeting the independents and undecided.
So, I guess maybe they’re hoping they can sway some of RFK people. Idk
She also gets the middle-aged white women excited on her side too. All the ones that might vote like their husband could change their mind to vote like Oprah instead.
I just don’t understand how anyone can see all of this joy and go, nah, I’m going to go with the hate.
According to my MIL, its because "the illegals are coming in here, taking all our jobs, attacking our girls...."
@@@@@@@@
But let me tell you, the snort I had to stifle when my 16 year old daughter decided to say her piece (jumping into a HEATED argument on day 2 of 7 of our family vacation, lol) looked right at her, and said "I literally don't care, let them all in," then walked away.
I also think a small piece of Oprah being there was to speak to women like my MIL. The boomer white suburban women who watched her every single day, and continue to follow what she says. MIL followed her religiously, and sent me obnoxious little snippets of all sorts of Phil and Oz garbage. These women *LISTEN* to Oprah. They may not immediately/vocally change their mind, but every nudge, till we get to November, counts. FIL is a lost cause, but MIL could flip, or at least leave it blank, because she truly hates trump.
Oh and I almost forgot, did we all sing along when Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” came on? Neil sued the Orange turd to stop him from playing it but granted Tim Walz permission.
You know that completely roasts Trump’s ass. Oh well, he’s still got Kid Rock.

Apparently there is an unscheduled block of time tonight and Twitter is going wild with speculation. Everyone from Taylor Swift to GWB is being suggested. Should be fun.

Is that for Beyoncé or is she already on the schedule?

She’s introducing Harris and is on that schedule, but could also be performing? No one knows for sure.

No argument from me on Trump’s cognition, though.
Yes I should be more fair to Biden as I'm not only a doctor, but even if I were in the medical field it's not my place to diagnose if I'm not on his primary team. Some of it feels like it's been propaganda from TFG's side "oh Joe's not with it" to get you to vote for TFG as "he's more cognitively able to do the job", but it grinds my gears as you literally can't look at one of them and say they're too old and not able to handle the responsibility for another 4 years, but then act like the other is in perfect health. I just can't see how people (not on here) look past TFG as completely healthy, or not concerned about his future.
Either way I appreciate that Joe knew he needed to step down for whatever reason, and I liked the strategy of doing it before the election, but after RNC. Honestly regardless of political party, it's not America's business what's wrong with him unless he can't act on his duties until the end of this term, and so far that doesn't seem to be an issue.
Just finished Tim Walz's speech. Fantastic! I'm ranking it #2 behind Michelle. Between her "Do Something" and his "You can sleep when you're dead," I'm fired up!
