We do not, but I am kind of wondering if my husband should get one. He had a completely bizarre incident happen just last night where he was driving home from work in the dark late on the highway and a different car was driving super weirdly… Zooming up behind him fast, then suddenly pulling to the shoulder and turning around and coming up behind him again, and my husband couldn’t figure it out. Then DH got pulled over by three squads and apparently the guy had called in that my husband was throwing things out the window at him and tailgating and flashing brights at him and all kinds of stuff that did not happen at all. It’s super bizarre and we’re still trying to figure it out. Anyway, the cops ended up believing DH and did Not ticket him.
This is timely. I saw a TikTok video yesterday of a woman who was driving and a car cut her off and slammed on their brakes. The woman didn’t hit them, so they threw their car in reverse and rammed into her, then got out acting all bewildered and hurt.
The man’s face when he saw she had a dash cam was amazing.
We are planning on buying them for our cars on Black Friday.
lol I was going to ask if this was prompted by that video. It’s really gone viral.
That video is the best advertising for dash cams ever. She should really get a sponsorship or something out of it. Lol

I have them on order and just need to be installed. My cousin will killed in a horrific car accident last month and they police had to get a warrant to get the data from the man who hit and killed her car, it took a few weeks and after I processed the loss (still not completely done processing it ) I had a moment and ordered cams for our cars.
I do not, but it was already on my Black Friday “deals to look for” this year. I have a pretty long commute with major traffic and driving feels so much more intense than it used to. One of my favorite podcasts has mentioned a few times about a situation where the other driver was clearly at fault and it was a he said/she said until the officer saw the camera footage.
If your regular drives haven't inspired a dash cam purchase yet, you are either lucky... or the problem. If you're the latter, you probably don't want one, ha! I think we bought our first in 2015, we have very, very stupid drivers in central FL- and the purchase was inspired by them (not scams).
Our current cameras are 4 years old now (still doing fantastic, but no longer sold). It is by Viofo, but you're really shopping for the sensors (which means there are duplicates with all sorts of branding). Because ours is still working well (and a new one wouldn't be much of an upgrade), I'm not shopping for one right now so I can't verify that this is what I'd personally choose- but Amazon says it's the newest iteration of ours. www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A229-Plus-STARVIS-Ultra-Precise-dp-B0CKX14L34/dp/B0CKX14L34/

This is one of those things I want in theory, and I'll probably order ones for all our cars (esp. the one ds is going to be driving) but then drag my feet on actually getting them installed because I don't even know what installation involves, where to get it done (dealership???) and it seems like too much effort right now to figure that out.
My H installed all of ours, he made it seem easy (but he's good at that kind of thing). I know you can get them installed at garages and Best Buy (if you still have those), but I bet this is one of those things you can get done at home by someone local by posting for recs.

I’ll take a rec if anyone has one!
I just bought a cheap one for now (and will likely go in the car we don’t drive much once we see BF deals).

I reject this binary…it’s an awfully negative way to approach the subject.
I don’t have one and don’t plan to. Doorbell cameras make me feel icky, too, honestly.
I do wonder about the psychology of all this surveillance and actual safety data information.
We have a ring camera at our house we don’t live at full time only to see if mail is left on the steps and to ask our neighbors to get it because mail gets stolen very quickly.
I don’t own a car so no opinion on the dash cam.
But also in this category people tracking each other’s locations on phones these days.
I just wonder what it all does to use psychologically!
People have been doing that scam since there have been cars and insurance payouts! It always seems risky to me, you don’t know who you are purposely hitting and what they will do. Or if somehow you actually will injure yourself.
Law and Order did an episode about this 23 years ago! The people hired to enact the scam were injured in the crash and died.

Well, I was being silly- but I agree with you on Ring (they're absolutely problematic). Our Eufy doorbell only has a view of our porch, though and is only connected to our phones and home network (no cloud recording on purpose). We have stealth delivery people and don't use the front door regularly- it's the only way we know something has been delivered.
And as I said above, dash cams just keep drivers honest. I have a lot of trust in humanity (probably more than I should), but that all melts away behind the wheel.
If it helps, absolutely no one is watching dash cam footage for fun- it's not even formatted in a way that would be possible. You only pull relevant bits, the rest just gets recorded over. My last "relevant bit" was 2-3 years ago when the minivan in front of us sideswiped a USPS delivery driver and kept on going. If I'm honest, it felt a *little* ugly to use our video in a non-personal defense way, but the postmaster was so appreciative- and seriously, fuck hit and run drivers.

There are mothers on my college admission groups who track their college aged adult children- without their consent. I just do not understand. None of us track each other, though- it's not our way.
This worked. What’s up with the trash bags in the window? What are they trying to hide?
The trash bag falls down and you can see them switch drivers. I suspect the person driving has lost his license or doesn’t have insurance, and they planned to switch without her seeing. But when they reversed into her vehicle, it fell. Super sketchy.

Yes. DH and I each got one in our cars after a completely unhinged person road-raged on us for not completing a pass in the left lane as fast as they wanted us to. (They must have been going 100 mph, because DH didn't even see them when he got into the left lane (two lane freeway) to pass a car in the right lane, and then all of a sudden this truck was roaring up behind us.) They drove on to the left shoulder next us and swerved at us multiple times. I called 911 to report them (was able to give the license plate and vehicle description), so hopefully they got a visit from a police officer at some point.
We need to get one for DS's car (he is still on a learner's permit), but planning to wait until Black Friday deals start.

Ah yes, the good old insurance fraud tactic. Dash cams are definitely good to make these cases very clear what happened and who was at fault.
No, and I haven't been tempted for our cars, but I have thought about a light weight GoPro for running on multiple occasions, after multiple close calls during this marathon training cycle.
I had a few instances where I was almost hit by drivers that ran stop signs or red lights, and if I'd had video I would have had something to provide to police to substantiate a ticket. As it was, I didn't bother, so those drivers will assuredly keep doing it.
Yes, I have for a couple of years. I don't have TikTok so I don't know anything about the viral video. People around here drive fucking nuts- run stop signs, run red lights ALL THE TIME. I'm a very safe driver so would like to protect myself. Also, I've complained about it before on here, but kids are now all over the place with those electric scooters zipping in and out of traffic, no helmets, not following traffic laws. If anything happens, again, I want to protect myself.
People in our area are pretty good drivers, and for all the driving I do/have done, I don't see much road rage, etc.
That video has me reconsidering one for my daughter's car though. She's a new driver, and while she's a good driver, she doesn't yet have a ton of experience on defensive driving, and such, just because she's so new. Something like that would be good to have for any sort of incident, because an accident is scary enough, let alone as a brand new driver who doesn't necessarily know what do to/say/not say when something happens.
I saw the video as well. Well probably look into one for both of our cars. Drivers here can be insane. I would’ve loved one when I was sideswiped a few years ago and the jerk driver took off.
As much as my Ring camera annoys me with notifications during the day, I’m still grateful for it. It caught our gun violence incident a few years ago (which, traumatic but still helpful for the police).

Yes, I have one in all my cars. My son has a front and back camera in his car, and I just have front ones in my 2.
If you don't want to notice it, the garmin mini is a good camera and super small. I have it in my Audi TT which is a tiny car and you don't even notice it.
We ran the cords and hid them in our liners ourselves. I found a YouTube video on how to string the cord for the rear camera through my hatchback door, too, so it wouldn’t just be hanging there. It seemed a lot more intimidating than it actually was. It took me less than an hour to do myself.
