This is timely. I saw a TikTok video yesterday of a woman who was driving and a car cut her off and slammed on their brakes. The woman didn’t hit them, so they threw their car in reverse and rammed into her, then got out acting all bewildered and hurt.
The man’s face when he saw she had a dash cam was amazing.
We are planning on buying them for our cars on Black Friday.
For me, peace of mind that I have evidence of how I was driving in case of any accident. There would never be a he said, she said situation because I can download the video of my actions. It was also just $60 and easy to install.
Oh wow, I came here after just watching that TikTok. That was crazy and it made me want to get a dash cam when I had never considered it before. I probably won’t end up getting one, but like many TikTok videos, it momentarily convinced me that I must have this thing.
Front and rear. If you drive or own a car that gets driven, you should have dashcams- they're very inexpensive insurance against liars (a lot of people think its perfectly acceptable to lie to get out of trouble) and scammers.

lol I was going to ask if this was prompted by that video. It’s really gone viral.
We bought a new to us car in July that was the dealer demo. They have dash cams on all of their demos so we got the fancy factory installed version. I really like the peace of mind that I don't have to defend myself or find witnesses if I'm in an accident. (And if it is my fault, I'll own up to it.)
I travel through several 4 way intersections between my house and work. Daily I see people go at the wrong time and not in an oh sorry, polite apology wave type way, it's an aggressive, flipping people off type way. There are so many near miss accidents and occasionally really bad ones.

This video popped up on both mine and my husbands FYP. It convinced us to buy them.
No but after seeing that footage I want one. This damn world and it's people make me so tired. WTF is that scam? What can't we all just be normal?
People have been doing that scam since there have been cars and insurance payouts! It always seems risky to me, you don’t know who you are purposely hitting and what they will do. Or if somehow you actually will injure yourself.

someone pulled something like that on DH and took it further - it involved two other cars and the one in the back pushed DH into the guy in the front who just magically owned repair shop and could fix it all for a good price if DH would just go there. He kept talking about how DH hit him so would be responsible for the damage to his BMW. Luckily he called me for a pick up and I squashed that immediately (call AAA and insurance). You should have seen the eyes on the guy in the back who caused it all when I showed up with a toddler and a baby, and he realized they could have been in DH’s car instead. That guy didn’t speak English, so mr body shop kept insisting he could translate for everyone (spoiler - DH and I still had decent Spanish from our time living in Guatemala so we just listened without letting on). I took photos of everything which was useful because body shop guy insisted his BMW was totaled. Photos made it clear DH felt thd brunt of damage and BMW barely had a dented bumper. Back guy also had fly by night fake insurance. Clearly body shop guy was the ring leader. When DH told his insurance why we thought it was a scam, they investigated and agreed.
Did anyone get the feeling that the TikTok video was a plant? An advertisement for the dash cam?
No, I don’t think that’s the case here. She sounds very flustered and you can see there is a car behind her that goes around in front and picks up one of the people in the car.
ETA - they also switch drivers. I think if this was a dash cam ad, it would have been less convoluted.
sonrisa that is bananas! And poorly executed. I hope they gave up their life of crime afterward. I’m glad no one was actually hurt and you were on the ball!

This is what prompted this post!
Plus being in the NYC area and commuting every day.
