One of the candidates for state rep wife came knocking on our door this morning.
She handed me literature. I asked what party. She said R. I said I won't vote for anyone who doesn't respect me enough to control my own body and she took back the pamplet and walked away.
Shoulda said "I'm sorry, you should give this directly to my husband. I'm just too busy a scrubbin' dem floors to wrap my pretty little head around the politickin. Besides, women voting would threaten my traditional marriage!"
yeah, in taking the things back and walking away she as much as admits that the candidate holds a firm belief that you shouldn't have control over your body and that is one of his/her non-negotiable points - as if she said The candidate is Christian and you said I only vote for Jews.
Love your response. I think it's a missed opportunity for any politician to not try to persuade someone with other beliefs or at least explain why they feel their belief system is superior in my opinion.

this reminds me of that article about dems wanting to talk about what they believe and try to change people - vs. gop not talking as much about it.
You are not going to persuade someone who has given you a comeback like that... and you'd be wasting your time trying. (either side) When they are going door to door they aren't trying to start arguments - if someone didn't know much and asked questions they'd answer- but I think it's silly to think she did anything wrong by not engaging. Sure- she could/should have been a bit more diplomatic about it. I love that she took the pamphlet back - she should - saving money!
How do you get this from something the candidate's wife did?
Exactly, its unfair to assume this woman doesn't have her own opinions and make her own choices. Ha! Choices! A woman making choices!
Sorry, I misread that it was the canadiate herself that knocked on the door. But, she is acting as his representative so it would have been nice for her to engage.
Sept- Engage you? Why? It was quite clear your mind was cemented shut on the subject and there was nothing to be said that would even get you to look at the subject in a different vein, much less change your thinking.
I'm registered unaffiliated, but we have open primaries and I opted to vote in the republican primary. It looked like i was going to be on a business trip on election day, so I had DH request an absentee ballot for me when he did his early voting. My ballot arrived the same day as several flyers from GOP candidates who we boasting that they were social conservatives - their flyers had the usual tag lines for people who are my complete opposite socially. I asked around and my suspicions about the people who sent me flyers were accurate, there was no way I was voting for them.
My business trip was cancelled so I voted on election day. The polling place is in my neighborhood. Turns out that one of the conservative candidates for lt governor lives here, and he had someone working the poll for him. As I walking up I hear her telling someone, " he has such a great character, great character!!!!". She stops me, I see who she's campaigning for, and look in the packet I have with me of campaign materials to see if I have any notes on him. I pull out his mailing and she got all excited. I looked at it, looked at her, and said, "god-family-constitution?" She proudly nodded and I said nope, not my guy ( we have a joke with my friends that that seems to be the refrain of the social conservatives - god- family-constitution. She looked a bit shocked, but not quite as shocked as the guy lobbying for amendment 1. He asked if I was voting to protect marriage, I asked him if there were roving bands of gays showing up at his house trying to attack his marriage. He said no.

She at least was not as rude as were you.
she said 'I won't vote for anyone who doesn't think I should be able to control my own body' to which the canvaser could have said, 'then Bob is the candidate for you, he has a great record of supporting cross-state lines insurance pools to make sure you can afford health insurance to see your own doctor and get the care you need'
it's a spin answer that doesn't go to the the heart of her concern, but it might persuade some people. To just give up without an answer to a statement that is open to interpretation is weak politics.

Open to interpretation? really? C'mon. I'm thinking it was a smart ass, nasty response and she thought better of bothering with her. I get it.
Expecting her to engage with her is like expecting a Dem candidate to engage with a pro-lifer who called him/her a baby killer at her door.

It's rude to state your opinion that you'd like to control your party, but it's not rude to come knocking on someone's door to shove some political brochures in your face?
I really don't think septimus' statement was anything like calling a dem a baby killer. Yes, it made a point, but it wasn't accusing anyone of murder, ffs.
UMaine is right that a statement like that is easily spun by a decent campaigner.

It is.
I told my tennis partner about it. She said one of the other guys running for our district came out to her farm. She told them they were liberal democrats. He retorted "i noticed you have voted in the R primaries before". She said yes to hopefully stop the crazies. He replied... let me tell you why I'm the least crazy...
and he won her vote for the primary (just not the general).

Well, I guess that's your opinion. Regardless of whether it was on equal footing, the sentiment is the same..as in...." You suck, why are you at my door?" Yup, definitely open to being persuaded.
Oh god yes, how dare she avoid arguing with someone on their own doorstep.
I cannot eyeroll hard enough.
And shove literature in her face? Please. She knocked on her door and then went away without arguing when the resident made it clear she wasn't interested in a discourse. I'm not sure what's so abhorrent about that. I wish Jehovah's Witnesses were that easy to get rid of with their stupid Watchtower bullshit.

I disagree. She didn't say, "I won't vote for your candidate because..." She said, "I won't vote for any candidate who believes x..." A great political response would have been, "that's great to hear. Let me tell you what we believe..." spinning it so that it fit in.

I DON'T WANT IT SO WHY ARE YOU MAKING ME KEEP IT?
Apparently you missed the part where the OP stated she was hoping she would engage. I think what she really means is that she was hoping to egg her on....and it didn;t work.
