i had a friend who was a Jew for Jesus and he emphatically denied being a Christian.
And there isn't one Jew I know who would have agreed with him. Jew for Jesus = Christian. Plain and simple.
that's basically what i told him. i rarely got into deep philosophical discussions with him (basically because he was an idiot which had NOTHING to do with his religious persuasion) and pointed out what you said.
IIRC, the difference was they didn't consider Jesus the Messiah, but did consider him the son of God.
TBH, this was like 15 years ago and i was smoking loads of pot. my memory of details is a bit foggy.
As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain I take a look at my wife and realize she's very plain But that's just perfect for an Amish like me You know, I shun fancy things like electricity At 4:30 in the morning I'm milkin' cows Jebediah feeds the chickens and Jacob plows... fool And I've been milkin' and plowin' so long that Even Ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone I'm a man of the land, I'm into discipline Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699
We been spending most our lives Living in an Amish paradise I've churned butter once or twice Living in an Amish paradise It's hard work and sacrifice Living in an Amish paradise We sell quilts at discount price Living in an Amish paradise
I'm not Jewish, but I do recognize that the history of my religion was founded in Judaism. There are some rituals and parts of my worship life that may be similar to Judaism, but I do not feel bound to any type of Jewish Law.
Please explain how I am a fake Jew. Do you categorize all headcovering Christian women that way, or just me because I called a scarf sold to me as a tichel what I thought it was.
Actually, some Muslim women wear wigs instead of scarves to make sure their hair isn't showing. This happens in Turkey where women want to be observant but aren't (weren't? there was talk of this being changed, not sure if it happened) allowed to wear scarves at universities.
I still don't think you are a fake Jew, or even trying to be one.[/quote]
LAWD don't EVEN get my FIL started on women who cover their heads in Turkey. Real talk, it was raining once in Istanbul and I decided to use my scarf to cover my head, DH looks at me and says " Don't do that, it's embarrassing" For the record Atatürk banned ALL religious clothing. The Turkish Universities are just trying to keep it real!!

This, and team AW/2V. Make what you will of not wanting to wear a headscarf like a hijab, but that doesn't make her a fake Jew. And frankly, if 'The Tichel Shop' and 'Tznuis.com' don't care if non-Jews are wearing the products they sell, I can't for the life of me see why anyone else would.
So it makes me a poser to want to cover my head or just because I like to cover it in that particular style (which BTW isn't the only way I cover. I wore a snood today - do Jews own that style too or is it safe for a non-Jew to wear?). You do realize that Christian women have been covering their head since the beginning of Christianity, right? Jews don't own the rights to this practice or to the way in which most orthodox Jews tie their scarves. If they do, you better tell the many Christian women in Africa that they are posers just wanting to be fake Jews:
I have a lot of hair. It's past my waist. Wearing it in that style is one of the only ways it all stays in place.
So what I took from this thread is that you think I am a fake Jew because I "wrap my head like an orthodox Jewish woman". That's what I figured.
My theory is that YOU are the one with the superiority complex (based on your insistence that you own the rights to this style and anyone else wearing it is a fake poser). You're projecting your superiority complex about your faith onto me. That's fine.
BTW, the bacon in my dinner was delicious. I'm the worst fake Jew ever.

Makes her a poser, though right? And g-d forbid she be thought a muslim! ohh scary.
No, I don't want to be viewed as a Muslim. Not because I hate them or think they are horrible people, but because my faith tells me that I am supposed to claim the name of Christ publicly. Since wearing a hijab in my little rural Ohio town would make people who don't know me think I am a Muslim, I feel that it conflicts with my duty to represent Christ.
And it is scary when people give you dirty looks and mumble under their breath about you when you wear a hijab. Why on earth would I put myself in that type of position if I didn't have to, especially when I have my small children with me? People are involved in acts of violence all the time for things like that and I wouldn't want to put my family in an unsafe position.
It doesn't mean I hate Muslim people or think they are bad. It means I don't want to identify as one, just like I don't want to identify as an athiest, Jew, Mormon or any other religion that isn't my faith. If a large Jewish population in my town wore scarves tied like I wear them or snoods like mine, I wouldn't wear them either.
But it's easier to just label me a racist, so go for it. I'm sure you would gladly wear a shirt with a cross on it or a cape dress/kapp (can I say that word or does it make me a fake Mennonite) so everyone you encounter thinks you are a Christian.
I don't think wearing a scarf on your head makes you a fake jew. And I wouldn't wear something that brings me threats of violence either, regardless if the threats are coming from prejudiced haters. It's not a prejudice thing, it's a self-preservation thing. You don't go wearing your favorite red outfit down in the crip neighborhood.
Aw, it's a futile attempt if you're looking for some kind of apology or owning up to shittiness. Most of em are just bitches. They'll never admit to or possibly even perceive their douchiness. You're just going to have to ignore them, forgive & tolerate them or leave the board to find nicer people. Don't believe them or take them seriously. Some can be serious, but a lot not. They don't know you. You don't know them. It's not worth the effort to stress over it. (psst, I think some of them are robots anyway)
I theorize that drinks (alcoholic) help with the forgive and tolerate option. Just think of them as semi-retarded ugly kids being bullies online to make up for being too chickenshit to be bullies in real life. Or maybe they're bullied in real life and need to pick on someone to feel good. They may have nothing else to live for in their sorry existences; just look how often they're on here being shitty. I don't think half of them work for a living, though some claim some very interesting careers. It's all a big costume party. Pick a costume, have a drink and let's party!
I'm kind of disappointed with where this thread went. I don't care if AW wants to wear a head scarf. If she doesn't want to be seen as an observant Jew or Muslim, then it's probably better if she doesn't wear them where she could be mistaken as one.

Um, weren't you just clutching your pearls yesterday about people attacking others? Now you're jumping in head first calling people retarded?
Where's the Michael Jackson popcorn eating gif?
You clearly have no clue about the culture of this board.

Well, no. Not right. She's not a poser, or a faker, or anything. Christians and Muslims and Jews of various denominations all cover their heads. The method is a convention of sometimes geography, sometimes denomination, and sometimes convenience. In a pinch, my grandmother used to grab the doilies off the arm of the couch and stick them on my mom and aunts. She wasn't posing.
Can we safely chalk this up to Mr. D and AW having a vast divergence in religious belief (or absence of it), which is where all of this angst stems from? Please?

Can I ask a stupid question? What is the difference between a tichel and a traditional Catholic head covering? Is the only difference that the tichel is knotted in the back and the catholic one simply drapes?

I don't even know where to start with this. We're all retards, ugly, shitty, douchey, bitches, oh and have no lives and probably don't work.
Just wait, next thing you know she'll feel sorry for all our husbands!
You pretty much gave yourself zero chance on the board now. That was fast.
Tichel is a head scarf worn in observance of tzniut. It can be worn different ways.
I don't know what the purpose of a Catholic head covering is or when it's worn. Observant married Jewish women cover their hair pretty much all the time (unless alone with their husband. But honestly this observance varies. 10 Jews = 100 Opinions.) Do Catholic women cover their hair all the time or just in church? Anyway it's a sign of modesty and it's in deference to God.

It would be in church only (I think) and only really traditionalist women do it. I believe the reasons are the same.
Catholics aren't the only Christian denomination that cover. Most recognizable are the Anabaptists (Amish, Mennonites, German Baptist, etc.). Their headcoverings range from bonnets to scarves. Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons cover in worship, I think.
As for the rest of the denominations, there are a wide range of practices. I know some baptists that cover. Some pentecostals do too. I figure it's just like it is with Jews and Muslims - practices vary, but generally the more orthodox and conservative members tend to cover. Ask a different Christian and you'll get a different answer on what type of covering is required, when it needs to be worn and for what purpose.
