So to bring this back to the hairbow post, can we all agree that the little girl's outfit makes her look like a hooker
No.
I didn't think her outfit made her look like a hooker. If she was wearing this, I could get behind that judgment, but she looked like a cute little kid.
I don't have to have a clue. I can read. Open your eyes chica, more than half this board is mean ass bitches who'd rather say why they think you're stupid/wrong than say what and why they believe what they believe. If their beliefs on any topic only go as far as how stupid they think your opinions are, they're dumb as well as mean ass bitches.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH
I'll be civil again when I can expect some civility in return and expulsion for those that can't discuss with respect. This board has no and will never have a reputation for welcome and respect for divergent thoughts and views without such a conduct policy.
Is this "Toddlers in Tiaras" a site full of child porn? If so, why did you just tell all the pedophiles where to find more? You know this is a public forum. Please exercise some kind of discretion.
A still picture of this girl could be charming... creating/displaying an animation of her humping it up is gross.
I saw the thread with the rules of conduct. Obscene sexual content involving children is not allowed (thank god something isn't). How does one go about reporting such content? To a mod, Admin, this Nest thing or what?
Can only members report? I will so join as a member.
I do know non-Catholic Christians who cover their hair in church. They wear those doily things.
At my MIL's synagogue, there is a whole stack of these black doilies and a bowl of bobby pins. I had no idea what they were for and then I noticed all the little old ladies with them pinned in their hair.
My MIL calls it the shmata.
The first month or so after I got married I wore one of those at synagogue, just b/c I was so happy that I was married. That ended pretty quickly for me. From my unscientific observations it doeasn't seem to me like younger conservative women cover their heads in shul anymore.
AW honest question. Do you make the connection that if you were living in a liberal town or city (you know someplace that fundies look down on) that nobody would look at you strange for wearing a hijab? I can't fathom giving someone dirty looks for wearing one. If you are getting dirty looks you have to be living in some goober, super conservative town.
Regarding "fake Jews", I honestly never understood how Christians don't embrace their Jewish roots. Jesus was an observant Jew. Christian roots are steeped in Judaism. Wasn't the last supper a Passover seder?
I can see how it can be annoying with some people ( so I do get you Mr. D) It's like the New Testament is too mainstream for them. They have to go old school old testament and show just how hardcore Christian they are. It doesn't seem genuine. Or something.
Bet you wish you could make me actually. Mods say they serve the people. See if that means you can vote me off the island!
I plan to check it out for at least a week and give other members a chance to come online. There's supposedly hundreds of people on here. I haven't met everyone yet. I want to see what it's like all over before I decide which if any are worth joining. I haven't even tried this Hobbies tab yet. One week per tab thingy I'm thinking.

I live in rural Ohio, maybe that's the difference. We have several Muslim families here, but I have never seen an Orthodox Jew. It isn't very diverse here and I'm not saying that everyone is racist. I just think people fear what is different.
My sister lives in Cleveland and there is a much more diverse population there. I still wouldn't wear a hijab there for the other reasons I posted, but I have worn my other headcoverings there and people have looked at me strange, but I felt like it was more in a "what is on your head?" kind of way, not like I was getting looks of disgust. But I'm used to people looking at me funny and wondering what is on my head. At this point I only really notice it when people really go out of their way to stare (I get it a lot in my own church when new people are there).
As for someone covering their head trying to get back to the OT and how it isn't genuine for a Christian - the headcovering command for Christians is actually in the NT (1 Corinthians 11). Headcovering isn't come custom that some Christians decide they want to do so they will look Jewish or Muslim, it's something they decide to do after reflecting on God's word. This is why it's puzzling to me that MrDob can believe that I am pretending to be a Jew by doing this. Just because most Christians in America don't cover their heads anymore (or read their Bible or go to church for that matter), doesn't mean it isn't a tradition rooted in Christianity and still practiced by Bible-believing Christians throughout the world.
To the person that asked if I would wear a hijab in an area of the world where Christians are persecuted. I don't travel to those places, so I don't know. Out of respect for customs, if I ever traveled to the middle east, I would probably wear whatever was appropriate - if that included covering my neck also, I would do it. I'm assuming it's the same way with an athiest or a Christian who doesn't cover at all. You do what is appropriate for the customs of the country you are visiting. But I would never deny Christ for fear of persecution (at least I hope I wouldn't). I guess you can never know what you would truly do until you're in that situation and I hope God would give me the strength and courage to stand up for what I believe regardless of the consequences.
You're always willing to explain your point of view with helpful, informative posts without resorting to immature personal attacks. I really appreciate your willingness to help me learn about your beliefs. I think I've got it now.
All I know is that religions focus on being good on the inside. Yet many religious people seem to make it a priority to show everyone how religious they are on the outside.
Either God is actually more concerned about the outside, plus also super petty, and demands everyone wear a certain thing (except for sneakers - no matter how religious you are, Nikes are always okay, which is weird) or its just the people who want everyone to go "ooohhh! Look how pious! Hes even wearing the funny hat!". Sort of like how teenagers wear "outrageous" things to prove how amazing they are.

Either way its bollox.
Actually, they don't at all. That's why so many of us have issues with these clothing-oriented religious discussions. But I know I can't expect you to understand that.

What? There is a religion that is fine with you being an ass on the inside but simply looking the part? Sign me up baby!
I am just really confused overall by this thread, but I get the sense (and correct me if I'm wrong) that Doba is implying that Jews "own" headscarves or whatever. If that's the case, then just add me to Team AW here even though I disagree with a lot of what she's saying too. I just can't get on board with headscarf = fake Jew. I guess my Eastern European Catholic grandmothers are fake Jews then? Old ladies of various faiths wearing headscarves is not an uncommon sight in Eastern Europe.

Do they use the Jewish name for them, and buy them from Jewish websites, but have never met an Orthodox Jew? While simultaneously claiming that they can't wear the Muslim style because they are bad? Oh, right, then no.
If tomorrow your grandma starts wearing a hijab she bought from muslim garb.com then talk to me. Also, if she starts claiming her hijab is a Christian thing...
Ok, Ok. It all makes sense to me now. You think I'm a fake Jew because I purchased some scarves from a Jewish store.
When I started headcovering, I began to look for different styles that I liked. One of the sites that I came across in my search was called www.coveryourhair.com. You browse the site for me and tell me if it says anywhere on it whether or not the items are meant for a specific religion of women?
So, as I was browsing down the different options I could purchae to cover my head, I came across the Israeli tichels. When I saw them I assumed that this was the name used to describe a scarf that is tied around a bun. I honestly assumed that the name for a scarf tied like that was a tichel. I don't call a beret a hat, I call it a beret - not because I'm pretending to be French, but because I assume that is the common name for that STYLE of hat. I thought tichel was something similar.
Last year you pointed out to me that I was incorrect. I apologized for offending you for using the wrong name for my scarf and changed the way I describe it. No big deal.
Interestingly enough, after you posted about the Jewish names for these things and someone described to me what tzunius (sp?) meant, I remembered seeing that word other places. I once bought skirts from this store - www.junees.com. The homepage doesn't say anything about being for Jews. I like their skirts and have purchased some there (and so has my agnostic sister). You'd be amazed at how few options for long skirts there are for women. I didn't realize I could only buy from Christian retailers. Looks like I'm stuck wearing denim jumpers and cape dresses from now on
I'm still amazed at how you can say that it is wrong for someone to claim that headcovering is a Christian thing. I've tried to explain to you the history of Christian headcovering. A Catholic habit looks awfully similar to a hijab. As someone mentioned in the other post, there are only so many ways to tie a scarf.
You grew up as an Orthodox Jew. You never encountered headcovering Christians, so you believe that any Christian that feels convicted to cover is trying to be like the people of your faith. It makes sense. Perhaps living my sheltered life in rural Ohio has caused me to develop some stereotypes that I need to address - maybe I should reconsider my feelings about the hijab. It sounds like you have some stereotypes and "issues" that you need to address as well about Christians.
What? There is a religion that is fine with you being an ass on the inside but simply looking the part? Sign me up baby!
How do you feel about L.Ron Hubbard?
Well...I have my doubts about a religion based on aliens written by a science fiction writer...but on the pther hand...if I get to wear a great "space monster" outfit as part of the deal, I am so totally there! I could go through TSA and say "no, I will not remove my fake alien forehead, its part of my religion" lol.
who says I never encountered headcovering christians? I live in NYC we have everything here. Don't put your hangups on me. If you said hey, i found this site, and it's awesome that'd be one thing. But you put your holier than thou, don't swear because tee hee I'm so pious but the rest of you suck bullshit on me.
You are a piece of work AW, and very judgemental. Wear your headscarf. Shoot, wear a wig. But knock off the "I know what god thinks" bullcrap.
This is exactly what I meant in my post above. You don't offer anything helpful. You just resort to personal attacks.
I just explained to you where I got the word tichel - a topic you have been using to say negative things about me for a year now. Instead of giving me a response that shows you either understand where I was coming from or that you looked at the links I posted, you decided to ignore everything I said and default to your "You're just trying to be pious and holier than thou" comments. It's predictable.
I don't know what God thinks. I do, however, have an idea of what He wants from ME. I like discussing my faith and choose to share it on the board in relevant topics. I've tried to engage you in topics to learn more about you and your upbringing, but you refuse to help educate me. It's easier to just reflect your insecurities on me and call me names than to engage in a civil discussion that COULD result in the two of us learning from each other. (It's interesting to me that you never responded to my private messages about this topic, but choose to respond in a public forum.)
It's a shame. I don't know a single orthodox Jew. In fact, I've only ever known three Jews in my life and none of them really "practiced" their faith. I would love to be able to learn from you. You call be naive and bigoted because I come from an area of the world that lacks diversity and has shaped my worldviews, yet refuse to help me grow when I ask.
AW, no offemse but those skirts are ugly. And expensive for how ugly they are. I bet you coukd make your own for cheaper and cuter.
Target and Wal Mart have a bunch of maxi dresses and skirts. Hell, long stuff is actually in style right now.
I like the denim skirts, like this one - www.junees.com/product.php?id=687&cid=2. I've bought two of those. I can sew and have turned a pair of jeans into a skirt, but I haven't figured out how to sew my own denim skirts. Denim is hard to work with. The only other denim skirts I have found in stores either have large slits up the back of them or are really heavy (the ones from that store I linked are a lighter fabric).
I don't really like maxi dresses because I end up having to wear a shirt under them and I don't like how that looks, but I have found a lot of long, summery print skirts that I like in regular stores. Unfortunately I live in Ohio and would freeze in the winter in that stuff. I need other options.

cause it ain't my job
and your bacon comment? The more I think about it, that's pretty antisemitic. But you don't know any better, right?
No, it's not your JOB. I just figured most people like helping people understand where they are coming from. But once again, you completely ignored what I said and posted yet another different criticism of me. Geesh. This truly is a pattern we have going on here.
The bacon comment was because you said I was like those Torah Observant Christians. I was showing you that I am not Torah Observant because I had bacon for dinner last night. If I were a "fake Jew" I don't think I would have eaten that.

i don't know if it was antisemitic but it was pretty uneducated. some jews eat pork.

I thought avoiding pork was in the Torah. Wouldn't a Torah Observant person refrain from eating it?
Once again, I don't know any Jews well in real life. Do they really eat pork?

that's like saying a Bible observant christian would keep slaves.
But nowhere in the NT is there a command or law that says I have to keep slaves. I as a slave, could be a Bible observant Christian.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are laws in the Torah about pork. Isn't part of being Jewish following those laws? I realize there is a wide spectrum of beliefs in Judaism, just as there are in Christianity. So is it just the more orthodox that avoid pork? Out of the Jews you know, how many eat it?
You can roll your eyes, but I honestly thought that this was a common thing in Judaism and Islam.
