I've seen women here use the c word, I think someone did yesterday and no one got all up in arms about it.
The "c-word" is very different and not nearly as offensive. Sorry.
I think the c word is just as offensive. Are you saying it is not as offensive when a women says it to another women? I know in if any of our husbands or boyfriends called us the c word it would be pretty serious.

Dude, no. My idiot 12 year old niece who is super sheltered knows what that word means. Come on. It's like saying you don't know what the N-word means.
And I will say cunt all day, but I don't touch that particular f-word with a ten foot pole. Apples and oranges.

I have cousins that were raised in a very similar fashion - little to no exposure to the world outside of their church - but I'm pretty sure even they know that isn't an acceptable insult to throw around.

I also find the c word very offensive.
I am not saying that some people don't find the c-word very offensive. I know many do.
It is not a word, however, that was created specifically to malign an entire group of people and used extensively by those who commit hate crimes or to keep people from their rights as human beings. Therein lies the difference.

A good rule of thumb (and I am not saying this sarcastically) is not to use words (derogatory or otherwise) that identify a group of people to insult someone.

Ding ding ding! Cunt is a showstopper, true. It's totally offensive, true. It's not hate speech. That particular F-word is on a par with racial slurs. Cunt is just deliciously filthy.

You know, i've known some people (mostly younger generation) that throw that word around like it's not a big deal. This word is a pretty offensive word, yes, but some people just really don't know how offensive it is. I wish more people would stand up and go off on the person that says offensive words (cword, nword, fag)in real life like they do on these message boards.

so....you never interacted with your fellow college students? Or high school students for that matter?
I was homeschooled until high school graduation and had lots of socialization... with other homeschoolers and people from church and political campaigns. I had friends who went to public school, but they would have never cursed or done anything to really clue me in to the real world.
During college I worked full time to pay my tuition because I wasn't allowed to take out student loans because my parents don't believe in any debt and would not cosign. The only option was to get enough scholarships and pay the rest on my own. This worked out really well for my financial life, but I didn't make college friends or do any college-y things. Also, I was still living at home so I was still scared of doing anything my parents didn't approve of. I started watching real movies and reading more, but I didn't have time to really explore the real world until I graduated. No lie, before I started reading and posting here I didn't even know how sheltered I was. I keep learning obvious "Duh" things here most people probably knew in 5th grade.
Do you have friends NOW? You've lived in DC for a few years right? Surely you must have met some normal people there.

Whatever. You just sit around making excuses for why yousaid it and keep backpeddling on why and how you had no idea what it ment. I am twice your age and have lurked for so long I have watched you spew crap onto the computer screen so many times, then claim to be pollyanna. I could no tpossibly care less if you stay or go. As for having respect for a bebe 22 year old that spews words used in hate crimes then cries she didn't know what it ment? Yea. you are a moron.
oh, ffs. the internet wasn't even INVENTED when i went to college and i knew that was a no-no word. as are, imo, "gay" and "retarded," though i know those are a losing battle around here.
for someone who claims to be a "writer" and who, certainly based upon OOTD posts, has managed to otherwise fit into modern american society (i.e., you're not wearing some hester prynne get up), one would think you'd be a wee bit more sensitive to language and the powerful impact of various words. as a writer. who writes. with words.
You knew enough about the word to use it in an insulting, offensive way. I don't think you're nearly as sheltered as you portray yourself. It's not a cute shtick anymore.
