I'm confused about how on the one hand you say none of your friends or family would ever dream of cursing, yet on the other hand, you heard this word tossed around frequently and casually growing up. Where? And by whom?

I'm sorry, but you are so full of shit. You're 22, not 5, you obviously have internet access, and have watched the news. You've never once came across a debate about the use of this word? How many times have you seen someone call another person that word here? I mean, come on, if it was just another harmless insult, I'm sure it would have been over used here already.
Also, you said you were introduced to the meaning of the word recently, therefore you KNEW what it meant. I don't buy for one minute that you oops, just forgot. I didn't even read the damn thread, hell I don't even know you, but your bullshit excuse for why someone living in this day and age would think it was ok to throw it around like any other insult, is a crock of fucking shit. Maybe take some time and educate yourself, so you don't "accidentally" spew hate words at someone else.
I missed what happened but if you were *SO* sheltered, how did you even know that word in the first place? You're a preachers kid? Does your dad preach at Westboro Baptist Church?
I didn't hear the word until I was in college, and I just overheard it. It wasn't used by people I personally knew, but I overheard it sometimes if a fight was happening or something. I don't know exactly, but I know I didn't hear it until college.
if this is true, why would you use a word without knowing what it means? especially one that, using context clues (shoutout to elementary school), clearly implied a negative connotation.
I will say that at least you had the balls to step up and apologize. (I didn't see the thread but I assume it was posted under a different name or a number of people didn't see the comment judging by Ellie's AE thread somewhere around here.)
But, you're 22, not a child. My brother and his wife home-school their children, their social interactions were limited to those in their church and home-school affiliations. My nieces are on their first and third years of college. Both are still extremely conservative and sheltered. Shoot, the younger of the two was full of epiphanies of what "other kids here age were like" her first semester and didn't like any of it. But neither of them would dream of responding with such a vitriolic message, or with such thoughtless inconsideration, precisely *because* of their conservative homeschool education. It's less of a defense than if you said you were raised in the forest by wolves.
Everything you are saying right now is just pissing me off more. I swear to God, if we were at the club right now and I was 19 again I would be telling one of y'all to hold my motherfucking earrings real quick.
i'm not really good in a fight (i punch from the shoulder, so i don't land my hits hard enough), but i can hold earrings! and i can use my legal skills post-fight. i'm in!
I am not saying that some people don't find the c-word very offensive. I know many do.
It is not a word, however, that was created specifically to malign an entire group of people and used extensively by those who commit hate crimes or to keep people from their rights as human beings. Therein lies the difference.
100% correct.
The difference is pretty obvious.
Group 1: cunt, asshole, motherfucker, cocksucker. Group 2: faggot, dyke, nigger, chink, wetback.
If you can't tell the difference between Group 1 and Group 2, you're stupid.
Is this the same ML that embraces "retard" as an insult? That is just as offensive to people with disabilities.
I would never in a million years use "faggot", but it seems completely hypocritical that this board has collectively eye rolled protestations of some derogatory words and some are clearly verboten.
And cunt is a completely misogynistic words and is absolutely used by people who commit crimes against women.
I'm a lurker, but this is exactly what I was thinking while reading this entire post...
I do not know anything about the OP that this was used, but I was also brought up in an extremely sheltered household and a very small town. I have the habit of wording things horribly and am admittedly a social misfit caused both by my sheltered upbringing and my book smarts killing my social smarts.
That being said, bull shit. Bull fucking shit. I do not give two shits less about your "apology" in which you try to shrug all blame on to your family and not knowing what a word meant until, like yesterday. You knew what the word meant before you uttered it, and I'm sorry who the fuck uses words in a cruel way that they don't know what they mean.
You have said some horribly degrading / harmful things in the past, you are judgmental, and you do not have the sense in your head to think before spewing hurtful things out in the world.
No you can not just get a pat on the back for being an asshat, there is no do over.

What the fuck is this shit. There are bad words, and there are "why in the fuck would you let that escape your lips?" words.
"Retard" is a bad word. It is not, however, on the same level as n*gger. Or f*ggot. So while I will side-eye someone who says retard, and probably say "yeah, that's not really cool" I will haev a stronger reaction to someone who calls someone else a f*ggot or a n*gger or a spic. If you don't think there exists a sliding scale in society as to what words will get you a disapproving look, what words will get you a shocked face and what words will get you straight up jacked in your mouth then I don't know what to tell you.
So, you're the judge of "how bad" a word actually is? Gotcha.
Yeah. Sorry. Not buying into this. Yes, she said a horrible word. But she didn't say it with intentional hate speech against gay people. It deserved a side-eye, not a shunning. Geez. In reality, a word is only as offensive as you let it be. In the context this one was used, a lot of people here are blowing it WAY out of proportion.

Nope. Some words are absolute I'm afraid. There are blurred boundaries, granted, but the F and N words are so far over that it's not even up for debate.
Group 1: cunt Group 2: faggot, dyke, chink, wetback
I'm not kidding when I tell y'all that I had to educate my (then) 42 year old co-worker on the definitions of the above mentioned words.
We used to work with a very racist guy (I went to high school with him, so I knew what to expect when I saw he was hired). He would say words like those above in casual conversation. Any time he'd throw down some slang, 42 year old co-worker would come running to me for a definition.
Chick was seriously sheltered. I have no idea how she made it so far through life without hearing these words. She knew the n** word from Tom Sawyer, but the rest... not a clue.

Try this experiment
Go out in a crowded mall food court and yell a sentence involving the C word. See how many heads turn. Repeat the next day with the N word, again note the reaction. Repeat a third day with the F word ( and to make sure we are on the same page I"m not referring to fuck), and for a third time note the reaction. I would be willing to bet that day two and three would both individually yield a higher / more involved response from the crowd than day one. I would also bet that you would be confronted with physical responses on day two and three.

Fuck you. If someone calls me a goddamn n*gger it's offensive no matter what the "intention" behind it was. If you call someone a f*aggot it's offensive no matter if it was "intentional" hate speech or not.
You're allowed to believe whatever you want. But, it must be absolutely miserable going through life taking offense to everything anyone ever says to you.
I DO find it pretty hilarious that you have no problem flinging around cuss words and personally insulting others, but, God forbid someone use one word you find particularly offensive. You must be so much better than everyone else.
call me crazy, but when someone says word A is "more" offensive than word B that doesn't mean word A is hunky dory and can be thrown around with abandon.
even if the n-word is universally agreed to be worse than the c-word, it's not like i'm going to be like "hey grandma, you c-word, want to go out for steak tonight?"

uh, no. it's not a word that only nugget finds particularly offensive. it's a word that society (with the exception of ignorant yokels) finds offensive, regardless of the existence or use of other commonplace curse words, because it is. YWIA!

Thank goodness my grandma's English is only mediocre.

Babyblue- So according to your logic, its cool to drop the N word as an insult to someone, so long as you aren't intending it as a form of hate speech, yes? Do you see how fucking stupid you sound?
I'm sort of surprised that calling someone a retard is being deemed ok, though. And I don't understand how its lumped into the hateful but harmless insults category, considering its often used in hates crimes against people with special needs. How is it any more acceptable than calling someone a faggot?
I realize this horse is dead, beaten, buried and rotting on ML, but still.

Are you fucking SERIOUS with that shit? You think me saying "fuck" is on the same level as f*ggot or n*gger? Seriously??? Me saying I find racial slurs offensive is somehow taking offense to "everything anyone ever says to you?"
And yes, I am better than everyone else, but that is entirely due to my epic rack and mad dance skills and not the fact that I find racial and sexuality-based slurs disturbing and disgusting.
Gosh. You really get worked up. About a whole lot of nothing. Really, if internet strangers piss you off this much, I'd hate to know how high your blood pressure is. Take a Xanax and chill the frig out.
