Cunt is absolutely a misogynist term, as are bitch and pussy.
But you can pretty much call anybody a cunt or bitch or pussy -- male, female, black, white, or other.
I don't really have any issues with cunt, and, honestly, I'm not exactly sure why it is "filthier" than bitch or pussy. I suppose it has something to do with frequency of usage. Who knows?
In college, I learned that "cunt" and "quaint" have the same origin in the word "queint," first used in Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene. It referred to a "dark mysterious place" or something like that. I thought this was hilarious, so perhaps this is why I don't really get so bothered by "cunt."
so, jenny1980, what's your proposed solution? no one ever point out hurtful speech because sometimes people don't point out hurtful speech? or are we supposed to have a shitstorm (TM his) post every time someone uses an offensive word.
i'm just trying to figure out your endgame. i mean, other than calling everyone, collectively hypocrites (despite the fact that individuals here in the past have expressed differing views about the very words about which you are complaining). you want us to use our delorean to go back in time and get unmad about this word? or go way way back to like 1999 and get pissed off all the time, always about any word that you don't like?
I have such a hard on for you, cville.
Watch it. People don't like the use of hard-on either!
Why not just say "I'm an asshole. I'm sorry but I know I really fucked up and get it if you guys shun me."
Instead of this bullshit about hearing a word and not knowing what it meant. If your family/church circle used it, it was obviously derogatory. Not hard to figure out.
Because I'd like to make this a somewhat educational post, let me enlighten you about Asian slurs.
Don't call Asian people the following: banana buddhahead chee-chee ching-chong chinaman chink chonky coolie cunt-eye dink (not to be confused with DINK) flip fob gook jap nip pancake sideway vagina/pussy/cunt slant-eye squinty twinkie yellow zipperhead
Some of these are worse than others. Some of these are embraced by people of Asian descent and thrown around by them, but YOU, as a non-Asian, are not in the Club of People Who Can Say Some of These Words.
I'm late to the party but seriously JJ, you didn't know what it meant?! I was sheltered too, I'm very recently 23, but I know damn well and knew for a very long time that "faggot" was not only the British word for a cigarette (most commonly shortened to "fag") but also a cruel derogatory term. You used it in its derogatory term so it isn't like you didn't know it was bad. Even if you didn't know the meaning, you knew enough to know it was an insult. So if you insult people by just tossing around random words, why not fork? spoon? wooden box? paper? No, you used a term that you KNEW had a bad meaning. There is no way you didn't know. Even children who don't know why the term bitch is bad, still use it because they know it can hurt people and they shouldn't say it. They still know it has a meaning that is wrong for them to use.
I call absolute bullshit that you didn't know.
Also Google. You're ON the internet, fucking use it.
Maybe I grew up sheltered, and I'm just now realizing it!
The N word for Hispanics. Bad bad bad.
Not that it is necessary to elaborate on this... but specifically the term referred to Mexican Immigrants that crossed the Rio Grande to enter into the US illegally. It is interchangeable with "wet behind the ears" which is another racial slur used to describe Mexicans.

Wait, rully? I always thought "wet behind the ears' meant, like, new at something. And that's all.
Agree with Rex.
Nicole, your elaboration re the origin of "wetback" is correct, but "wet behind the ears" is an idiom for being a novice or being inexperienced.
If "wet behind the ears" is now an offensive term, it's a twisted one that didn't start that way.

I would use caution when using this phrase. It can absolutely stand for new at something but I have also heard it used derogatorily used to describe a Mexican immigrant.
Does everyone view this word so badly? For example, in the story above, were all the people in the room mentally freaking out, or is it plausible that there are groups who use it as casually as I thought it was (like Fuck. Harsh, but harmless).
It is totally possible, probable even, that there are some groups in which the word is used casually. But you should probably not associate with these people.

I just remembered another instance I heard the word used. Seriously guys, I have been racking my brain all day trying to figure out how I messed this up so bad.
But this past fall there were a bunch of guys watching football at some event I was at and this player made a bad move in the game. One of the people I know kind of laughed and goes "What an F.."
In hindsight I am appalled at that guy's casual usage and how insulting this was, but given how casually I heard it used, I never realized it was a word I needed to google. I knew it was an insult, but I didn't have any idea the extent of the insult (truly until this place exploded today). And I only learned the dictionary definition of it over Christmas break.
SERIOUS QUESTION, PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME MORE.

It's always a derogatory word for gay people, but people do use it casually (too casually). The implication is that player is so gay he doesn't know how to play sports because gay people are never athletic.

Once when I was in college a group of guys sat in our living room and told racist jokes. They clearly thought the n-word was okay, but when I came flying out of the bedroom and told them to get the fuck out of my apartment I made it clear that it was not.
So, to miso's point, just because someone uses it casually does not mean that they are not aware of its implications or that it is offensive.

It's offensive among any group of people. I have a 14yo on my case load who used it at school and got suspended for 10 days. The label the school gave him with correlated with a hate crime.
I believe that you might not have realized how horrific it is but hopefully with what happened today you will learn from this and work on not living such a sheltered life and worry less about being pretty and bubbly and look more into ways that you can become more educated about life outside of your circle. If you used this at a job you would have been fired.
Huh? People all over this thread have lumped cunt in with other swear words as though they're on par.
I love how people choose to ignore the root of some words if they happen to enjoy using them. Cunt is generally understood to be one of the filthiest words someone could use. And guess what? The definition is vagina. How is that not misogynistic?
Uh, no...people have said that word is not on the same level as f*ggot. Nobody said that it was the same as fuck or goddamnit. And absolutely nobody said they enjoy using that word, unless I missed a post somwhere in this cluster of epic fuckery.
I will admit to loving it and using it. Cunt is what fuck used to be.
I get it. Like I understand there is a difference between racial slurs and regular cuss words. But, whose to say anything is anymore offensive than anything else?
I feel like I'm a weirdo because I don't get offended easily by words. People flip out, but I'm just meh about stuff. I don't get all up in arms. I feel people are so quick to say "YOU'RE RACIST!!!!" and are offended so easily.
I was going to let this go, but, now that you've repeated your point, I must highlight it.
You are not a weirdo. You are ridiculously insensitive if you don't understand why people "flip out" or "get all up in arms" about "nigger" or "chink" or "faggot."
This is not a matter of being "offended easily by words." These words are more than simple pejorative terms. They are the embodiment of mistreatment, inequality, and lesser identity.
It's a word that everyone *should* find incredibly offensive, but I have heard it thrown around as if it were a more casual swear word. Sometimes, it's that people don't understand what it means. Other times, people just really don't care if they're using hate speech. Either way, people that use that particular f-word in a casual way are not the kind of people I want to be associating with.

Lurker here, and late to the party to boot. FAG is an acronym for "Foreign Aid Good(s)" referring to cigs that were dropped for military stationed in Europe in WWII. They were in wooden crates marked F.A.G and I guess the name kinda stuck. I promise I'm not usually a know it all type and hope to post more in the future.

Mere lexicon does not enrage me.
But intolerance, prejudice, and bigotry?
MISOANGRY.
I seriously love everything you're saying today. I mean, I'm pretty sure I always have liked you, but today, I'm kind of starry eyed for you and NuggetBrain. (heart)
Yeah. I said I understand why. Twice. Like I said, I don't get offended. I see why other people do. I personally don't. That's not be insenstive. What's insensitive is to USE those words. But to not PERSONALLY take offense to it is different.

Your implication is that others are in the wrong.
I'm of the opinion that hate speech SHOULD offend EVERYONE. It has no place in our lexicon. The words are disgusting and ignorant and hateful and the people who use them generally are too.

But today has truly sealed the deal. Like we're blood sisters now. (heart)
