I think girls have more options, but I sort of like that boy clothes aren't a dime a dozen. I actually have to hunt for cute, different things. Its a challenge, and I like it. Usually.
I'm not sure on the exact number but probably around $300. My mom took me shopping when I was 30 weeks pregnant as my baby shower gift and spent like $1200, so that helped a lot. Since we bought size NB-2T, I've only had to buy a few outfits for each season.
lol Lou. Preferably one that stays on a little boys head that hates hats, but i don't think it exists. But if you find a matching one for me id totally buy it and wear it.
I ended up voting $1000-5000 but it's much closer to $5k. I obviously can see how I could cut back on my spending for her but I still think I'd end up spending over $1000 even if I shopped consignment etc. I don't know how you guys get away with spending so little!
A. I have a boy. B. My MIL buys a lot. C. I'm not really into clothes personally. I want to look classy, but I really just enjoy basic, nice pieces without much variety.
I bet my (yet to exist) little girl will probably have a "boring" wardrobe. Simple or preppy feminine pieces that can mix and match.
I very rarely pay full price for anything. I bought that horse dress from Carter's and it was $26 I think... that's very similar to what I pay for J&J dresses when they are on sale.
See, J&J pearl-clutchers don't realize this. I have passed over stuff in Target b/c I can get J&J on sale for less.
It's how I get my husband on board. He looks at the Carters and Old Navy prices and realizes that I'm spending similarly on much higher quality stuff.

Same reason I don't do consignment, I can get brand new Gymboree for cheaper than consignment. Shop sales people!

To be fair, I would never buy full price Carters or Old Navy regularly. You can get that stuff for $1-$5 per piece and less than $10 for full outfits with sales and coupons.

I've seen them at Gap and Old Navy. Have you checked there?

I don't have a Carter's store, so maybe that's why? I never see sales that are that awesome.

Yeah, you totally have to go to the store. Its where you get the best deals for Carters.

I would rather buy used! Carbon footprint and whatnot!
I don't judge the clothes-buying, though, because we all have our consumerist area of life. Mine just isn't clothes. It annoys me if I think people are judging those of us who DO buy used, but that doesn't really happen on this board. We like to fight about other, more interesting stuff.

Yes, but I can get gymbo for 99 cents to 5 bucks if I drop in every week and buy last years stuff! Have I ever pip'd the haul I got last summer for 50 bucks? 22 pieces!
Buuuuut, I know a lot of people aren't gymbo fans. lol.
I didn't see any judging, and i don't think anyone is judging.
I do think its easier to spend less on boys. I think boys have less options. Boys clothes are freaking adorable, and i do love shopping for my boy but i feel like there is more selection when shopping for girls. Like there are tons of different styles of skirts vs. pants.
ETA:Random, but Lou needs a Fedora.
Yes! Max has one from Old Navy. He is a stud when he wears it.

Walking in a Carter's store makes me twitchy. It just isn't set up for finding things or finding things I need. There are two stores within 20 miles and both are the same set up.
- SIL buys nice stuff for A and has good taste. So I happily let her. - Stuff here is expensive and crap - If I buy online, I have to add at least another 50% to that cost to get it shippped here and to pay customs duties etc. And it takes at least an extra week from whatever the US shipping times are - Same weather all year round. A has one sweater that was a gift! He has no proper shoes, just sandals - His nanny does his washing 2 or 3 times a week so we don't need huge quantities of stuff. - I am trying to be good because I know when he is at nursery next year, I'll want him to look cute then! Kids here wear uniforms all through primary and high school so nursery is the only 2 years I'll ever get to dress him for 'school'!
But if I have a girl, I may go wilder....
If I had to pay that much for shipping, I wouldn't buy nearly as much either! I hate even paying for shipping at all.
If I had a girl I would have spent a lot more. There's a lot more selection and it's much more tempting to me.
I've been fortunate that L has been in the same size for a long time. Also, I do frequent laundry and we re-wear the same favorites every week. Aaaaand since he doesn't walk yet I haven't been buying shoes.
I don't judge anybody - I kind of wish I was as stylish as some of you ladies. We spend some major money on our hobbies too.

Not judging but consignment sales are hit and miss here and I don't want to spend time searching for stains. I HATE stains. HATE DESPISE LOATHE.
jamaicam I should start buying you things and send them to you with jfh!
I can't tell from this post if you and I will send clothes to jamaicam together, if you'll send clothes to the both of us, or if you'll send me to Jamaica along with some clothes. If I have a vote I'll take #3, please!

Well I have two kids so I just can't quantify the expense now that I'm 4.5 years in. We didn't have to buy H very much at all her first 18-24mos and she still gets a lot from relatives. Their sizes do match up seasonally but the flameful thing is that it is easier to buy D new stuff, wash it, and smash it in the drawer on top of the stuff that is too small, than it is to rotate through H's old stuff. I hate that chore, hate hate hate it. So I justify buying D new things by buying matching/coordinating outfits. It's the coordinating that is adding up. I know they won't like it forever so I'm running with it. Plus I'm looking forward to comparison pics of D now and when she's 3 or 4 in the big girl version of the matching outfit. H wears inexpensive basics to school and she wears clothes until I have to hide them for her because they are either way too small or way too thrashed. I'm also saving money on pajamas this summer because H has decided that she only sleeps in her underwear :-) I do need to do a clothes rotation before I buy anything else...(I said that last month)
I am shocked at how many people have spent so little
I guess I just don't get it, unless you get hand me downs, how can you spend $500 total? I've spent a couple hundred and i have received SO many clothes it's ridiculous. If I had to buy everything for her I assumed I'd have spent a couple grand by now at least? I mean, as I said she goes through several outfits a day many days.
I guess maybe I'd be more careful if I had limited amounts of clothes.
But still.
TrudyCampbell do NOT feel bad or guilty about how much you spend! It annoys me when people put a price on how much is "too much" to spend on anything. There are things I wouldn't spend 5k on and there are things I would. My priorities, income and living situation are nobody elses.
the only flames I would give would be if someone was buying so many clothes they couldn't afford to feed their kid. lol
