Poll, don't feel obliged to answer if you can't be anon. Just curious.
Someone told me yesterday they have $70K in credit card debt. I almost died. Especially at 15% or whatever ridiculous rate we have over here. We use our card for the miles but pay off the balance every month. I'm not sure I could sleep at night with 70K on my CC. Just wondering what is the norm?
We paid off all of ours before M was born and then accumulated a f-ton again since I had no job for a year. I'm trying to find one so we can dig out of this hole again. We're not in a great financial situation but nowhere near 70k thankfully. I wouldn't sleep well, to say the least. How easy is it to declare bankruptcy over there?
How do you even rack up $70K? What kind of card has a limit like that?
I would guess it's a card through their bank where they have their other accounts. These people are compulsive spenders. He makes very good money but he could make a million dollars and they would still spend 1 million point 5.

Oh it's totally possible if you have multiple cards, each w/ limits of at least 3-5k. Sadly. I imagine they had some sort of financial emergency like a medical issue and weren't just shopaholics... If I hadn't had insurance, I would have had to pay more than 50k for my c-section!

$50k?? Mine without insurance was $10k. Are you including the hospital costs?
We charge every penny we can for the miles/points but pay them off each month.
When I was in college, I paid my way through by waiting tables in the summer. By about March, I'd be really broke each year and start charging everything and taking out cash advances for my rent and car payment. I'd rack up several thousand dollars of debt but then pay it off within a couple of weeks of returning to my summer restaurant job. That was the only time I ever carried a balance. ETA: not because I'm awesome with money (I'm not), but because it scared me how quickly I could rack up that debt.

Yep, including all costs it was 50 for the surgery and some of the prenatal care (a few visits, I believe.) I had complications and was there for 6 days :/ Maybe that's why?
Did they give you a discount since you didn't have insurance?

That is terrible!!! argh!!
Unfortunately they are shopaholics. They have 2 brand new leased cars. I think it's a "keeping up with the Joneses" type of situation. I am trying to get my DH to advise them, financially. That is his area. Ugh!!!

I am a little horrified at how much we owe, but I know we will be fine and pay it off. I'm mostly mad at myself for being terrible w/ $ for the last few years and not having much savings besides my 401k (and not having a plan other than "staying home and getting a job will be easy next year right? WRONG! Credit cards are evil.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. The 10k was for the surgery alone. I didn't have to pay anything and my doctor ate it. It was a practice of four doctors, my job at the time was changing insurance companies half-way through my pregnancy and one of the doctors didn't take my new insurance. I had asked one of the doctors about how it would work if I wasn't covered and she said if my deductible was more than negligible they would work something out and I wouldn't have to pay. Well, I had 100% in-network coverage and zero out of network and as chance would have it, the one doctor who didn't take my insurance was the one who did the c-section. They ate the entire cost.

Omg! That is so lucky! It wasn't the csection that cost us so much as it was the anesthesiologist. We essentially got charged for a vaginal and csection delivery. Ugh!

We basically only use ours for oil because we get a discount for paying in full within a week of delivery. We don't pay it off monthly, but do make sure it's paid off before the next oil delivery.

The only reason they did it is because my H got all "one of your doctors told us!!" with them and all the doctors had to have a meeting to come up with a solution. But yeah, I made sure the hospital was in-network so I wouldn't have to pay on that end.

Well I am still totally jealous! Apparently the hospital I delivered at is one of the more expensive in the area because it's for profit? I totally didn't realize that mattered but we are in the process of switching and hopefully we don't end up getting charged out the butt this go around.

Ugh I'm sorry. I hope it's better this time around.
I put my new wood floors on a lumber liquidators credit card at no interest. I pay about $500 a month for two years. It will be paid off in one more payment! Yay! But besides that we just payoff our normal cards every month and leave no balance.

same here! It would have been nuch cheaper I'd I didn't have insurance and had the tax payers pay for it.... But we won't go into that.
