I always gave Roxy cheapo food (she's 15, so most of the years I had her I was a poor). Then my H bought her fancy Blue Buffalo. When I went back to cheaper food, she started puking all the time.
Soooo.... I would like to maybe find something in between? Because, shit man, I love her but that Blue Buffalo is $36 a bag.

I feed grain free and I think it's made a difference in their health. Right now it's a combo of Merrick and Nature's Instinct. I order big bags from amazon.
Now I am panicking about my kitty dying. He's all I have left, lol.
If it makes you feel any better my older two cats who live with exh are healthy and they are 12 and 8, and they have always eaten science diet. Then when I got the kittens they were already eating science diet, and the vet recommended it, so i kept them on it.

We recently switched my 11 year old cat, Josie from Purina One to Nature's Logic at our vets suggestion. She has a whole host of issues that I won't get into but the reason the vet urged us to switch was due to Josie's allergy issues. Josie would regularly vomit at least once a week or so - we just figured it was a hairball or whatever. The lady at the fancy pet food store explained that the more simple a pet food is, the less it will irritate their digestive system therefore, less vomit (and after she put it that way, I felt really stupid for not realizing it earlier). We've noticed that along with the less vomit, her coat is super soft and she doesn't shed as much.
So yeah, it sucks buying expensive pet food...but it's worth it!
Good quality middle of the road foods for dogs or cats would be Chicken Soup, Nutromax, Purina one. Petsmart has brands like Simply Noutrish and Authority which are decent. Cheap food can be tempting but cats (and dogs) are carnivores and eating things like corn, wheat and soy in the massive amounts that cheap food has really hurts them in the long run. The foods I mentioned aren't wonderful but they are better than something like 9 lives or Meow Mix. Feeding canned Friskies as a treat is fine but for the dry food, just pick a budget you are willing to spend and try to get the best food for the price. The best advice I can give is when you read the back of the bag, try to avoid food with corn altogether or at least make sure it's far down on the ingredient list.
good luck! I agree some pet food is ridiculously expensive.
We just put our 18 year-old at down last Wednesday.
She always ate dry food until about 1 year or so ago. She had started puking often. I switched her to canned and she loved it and did better but as time went on she became even more pick about food, she was even picky about her dry food. She would ONLY eat pate' and by the end all she wanted really was just the gravy off it and milk. With dry I always left her food out all the time, she never over ate. This last year I started also giving her milk in addition to her water and again, she loved it. This last 3 or 4 months I was giving her half a can of food twice a day and about 2-3 oz of milk twice day and she had access to dry food and water. She hadn't touched her dry food in quite awhile but about 3 weeks ago she would munch a couple pieces and this went on until about the week before she died.
Her puking greatly reduced on the wet cat food, in fact it was almost never. When she did eat dry again those last several days she also puked more.
I know she's in a better place but it's really hard coming home and no kitty.
Before one of ours got diagnosed with a chicken and grain allergy, we fed Chicken Soup. It has a great rating and pretty decent price for the quality of food.
Now we feed Nature's Instinct Limited Ingredient Rabbit, which they love. But at $50+ for a 10 pound bag that lasts us about 3-4 weeks, I want to cry. But the skin issues have cleared up and the other has stopped puking his recently digested food, so I'm happy in that regard.
I looked it up and blue buffalo is cheaper than the science diet anyway, so it's worth a shot. I hope they like the taste. I guess if I switch, I should do it gradually. They love their food. lol
