I finally got around to watching Frozen this weekend. The story was nice, decent animation, and good singing, but I don't see why the movie made $1 billion dollars. It's currently #8 for top grossing movies of all time.
1 - Olaf is just...well, he likes warm hugs. That makes him fantastic 2 - the love story is two sisters, not some boy rescues girl story we have heard a jillion times 3 - two princess! 4 - a princess with real flaws, and insecurities - opens up a whole new (older) world of kids to connect with the charachters
I don't know because my 3 year old only made it 10 minutes into the movie but I am so sick of that damn "Let it Go" song that I want to rip my radio out of my car.

Yeah, I finally watched it recently too and I don't get the big deal at all. It was fine, but nothing monumental. I also watched Epic recently when we had a free HBO/Cinemax On Demand promo and enjoyed that more.
I also recently watched it (on a flight to Seattle from Boston). It was fine, but it wasn't earth shattering. Maybe it was too built up for me?
It's a Disney movie (with all of the pull that goes along with that) that averts some of the more annoying, outdated Disney cliches. I'm not surprised at the amount of attention it is getting.

Do you have children? I thought it was fantastic, but I've seen dozens of other crappy animated films over the last 2 years. I would watch Frozen all day long over Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, or any other Disney movie. I guess it depends on what movies you're comparing it to. I would say it's tied with my other favorite, The Little Mermaid, but the message is so much better. I've had at least 2 people on my FB feed post similar statuses recently. If you don't like Frozen, what Disney movies do you think are better?
I actually just really loved this movie. I want my own personal Olaf, and I like the themes (love is the answer, don't get engaged to a man you just met, it's better to be alone and yourself than to have to live a lie, etc.). And I love everything about the Let it Go sequence in the movie. Different strokes for different folks...
My kids loved it. They have never reacted with such love for a movie as they did for Frozen. My almost 5 year old DD has never cared for anything princess and is obsessed with Elsa.
I really liked it as well but I judge it based on all the other kid movies I've watched over the years. It is definitely one of the best ones we've seen.
I haven't seen it yet and doubt that I ever will. I tried to talk my 4 year old into seeing it back in January but his heart was set on seeing "that squirrel movie." So instead of watching the most buzzed about movie in years I got to watch The Nut Job. Boo.
Other than my 4 year obsessing over it.... The songs are really really good. It's up there with the Lion King as one of the best animated musicals IMO.
I don't like it that much either, but I definitely see why kids love it. I thought Brave was a much better movie.
Brave was a fantastic movie with a great plot. But it wasn't a musical, so probably didn't resonate as much. DD does (did?) love it but hasn't asked to see it once since we got Frozen.
I loved Olaf & sisterly love part...aside from that I wasn't overly impressed. My girls enjoyed it, mostly the music. I never watched Disney movies unless I was a kid or had kids...otherwise, no thanks I am not interested.
So DD is obsessed with it. But also, there are a lot of good lessons that we talk about. Instead of "you need to marry a prince" we talk about how Elsa ran away and was mean because she was scared and that sometimes being scared makes you do things you wouldn't otherwise do. Deep, I know. But it is ALL she wants to talk about.
I went to see it after hearing all the hype. I liked it, but not as much as I thought I may have.
Some of the songs were really boring (Summer, and the Fixer Upper song with the trolls), and some parts of the storyline had me wishing they'd expanded upon it a bit (like how Elsa got her powers, and not acknowledging that her parents really fucked up in how they handled it).
Also, I know it's a children's cartoon, but it bugged me that Anna and Elsa were absolutely fine at the end ... being shut inside of a castle for 15 years with little (Anna) to zero (Elsa) outside contact wouldn't have screwed them up just a teeny bit? Also weird that the villagers were so frightened of Elsa once her powers were revealed, but then they were all perfectly fine with her once she thawed everything.
Also, I liked "Let it Go" before/when I went to see the movie, but I liked it a lot less after I saw the the Oscars performance and the Jimmy Fallon performance. But the animation during that song, with the whole ice castle, was spectacular.
I liked that they had Anna come to Elsa's rescue at the end, rather than having a guy save either of them. I also liked how Elsa flat-out told Anna that she shouldn't be marrying a guy she just met, contrary to most of the prior Disney princess movies.
What's with people constantly asking what the big deal with Frozen is? Lol. It's got pretty animation, catchy songs, and funny sidekicks, so there are going to be a lot of obsessed 3-6 year olds. I don't get why it's such a big mystery.
I get kids' love of it, and I get liking it as a parent of kids. I think the OP, though, is talking about why so many non-parent adults seem to be going nuts over it, which I have also wondered. It's fine, but I didn't find it groundbreaking. I definitely enjoy Pixar films; I've seen most in theaters. Many adults enjoy them, as well, but Frozen's adult fan base is seemingly huge, and its fervor is unique.
I like it because it's a different type of story. It's not the same old "princess falls in love with and marries the first man she meets." I hate those types of Disney movies, and frankly don't want my girls to watch them. I like Brave and Frozen because they have stronger females and the story isn't about being rescued by a man.

I know no childless adult who has shown any interest. I assumed most of the $ was from families with kids, but I have no knowledge of whether my assumption is accurate.
I read some article that the fervor took Disney by surprise too, which is why the merchandise is way understocked.

Thanks, I think this is my issue.
I have high regard for most Disney-Pixar movies so I find it interesting that a non-Pixar "Princess" movie is so popular.

Again, I think it goes to the fact it is a high quality musical. A lot of adults are into Broadway/musical theater- and these songs are Broadway quality written by Broadway veterans and the "big song" is performed by Broadway royalty.

I definitely think this is it. The people I know who love it I think mostly care about the music and Adele Dazeem.
