And yet your only suggestion has been, what, parenting classes? Without any evidence that she actually needs them.
I didn't say that. I don't think there's a silver bullet here. I think it will take multiple interventions on the part of the state, the community, the schools, and yes, personal accountability, to come up with a workable solution for this family. If I had a silver bullet, I'd be shouting it from the rooftops and would not hesitate to share. My comments were about the tone of some of the posts on the board, which I think causes a lot of people (myself included) to stop talking.
Who said you had to give a silver bullet solution? What do you think needs to happen?
ETA: I mean, you seem intent on the idea that she has to get a job. People are pointing out roadblocks -- like what happens when sickness inevitably spreads through the house, and she, being the sole parent, needs to stay home with sick children? She will blow through sick time (if she even gets any in the first place) and get fired.
Just to be clear, the question that I'm asking is how exactly are you defining personal responsibility in this particular situation that makes our suggestions the wrong answer?
I want to know why we are assuming she doesn't know how to fucking parent?
Because she's poor. Duh.
Considering the fact that she still has ALL her damn kids despite heavy oversight of the cps, that means she has to be doing something right.
This was another thing that was chapping my ass, but I figured hayworth and the like wouldn't get it if they can't grasp the simple concept that being poor carries the obligation of being grateful all the time.
She and her daughter were arrested for assaulting police officers.

She's a fantastic parent.
As was said before, I'm glad you live in an environment where all police officers are knights in shining armor. Where you've never lived in fear of the authority and what they might do. Where you haven't lived for centuries of police harassment based on the color of your skin, and have it ingrained into your core behavior. Where you haven't had to watch families be ripped apart. I'm so glad you have never had to experience any of that.
I totally cringed at the whole part about helping the kids not end up like their mother. That's just a shitty thing to say.
Here's a hint - She meant to say, "Help the kids not end up black, poor, and angry on tv. They need to be quiet and grateful."
Well you've got me on the poor part- I absolutely think It’s worthwhile to help those kids not be poor. And yes, help them learn to be grateful. I’d say those are two things that would vastly improve their lives

So that means it's ok to assault people and teach the next generation the same?

I never said that. I'm pointing out the reason for her behavior. It's not as simple as, "She's a bad mother. She's an asshole."

Was there any more update on the baby critically injured from the flash grenade thrown into his crib from the knight-in-shining-armor police?
On ML yesterday there was a post about someone's friend who was arrested for driving while black. He had to pay $500 in bail. Didn't do a damn thing other than be black and driving through TX.

Not all police are knights in shining armor and not all police are evil.

So all police officers are racist and evil. That seems to be the vibe I’m getting now.
Throwing out a couple of examples of shitty police doesn’t do much for your argument.
Do all poor, black people get a pass then if they feel the need to assault the police?
Huh? What?
I've just been following along and not getting involved but no one said that. Pointing out examples of a group not being perfect does not mean they are trying to prove he whole group is evil
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

@hayworth - Has anyone mentioned the fact that we AREN'T actually "funneling" money to solve these problems? Far from it in fact. I just came from a strategic meeting of my non-profit social service agency and we wondered whether it is worth it to continue to point out that we have unfunded mandates. The Section 8 housing voucher list is 10 years long in MA, cities and towns with affordable housing have several years waits as well and generally just close down their waiting lists because what's the point. I know Mitt Romney believed that the poor were "taken care of" with programs so he didn't need to worry about them. Just because the programs are "there" does not mean that they are really there at all. If there is a 10 year waiting list for housing - can you really call it a successful safety net? The same thing goes for child care vouchers and Head Start as far as waiting lists. So how about we actually funnel the money to the programs we say we have and see what happens vis a vis poverty.
