heyjude I didn't do it the first time around, but I'm not sure about trying it the second time around either. I like the look, but I can't quite figure out how to look mature while doing it.
Also, have you seen the patchwork jeans trend (in particular with plaid) and that flared (maybe even super flared) jeans are coming back? I am on the no side of the fence right now until I see it more out and about.
Were your peers doing it though?
I think there is no way to make the look work for a grownup anyway because its point is to mimic the schoolgirl look.
Yeah. I rocked that in high school in 1995!
Oh yes absolutely my peers were doing it. I wasn't nearly confident enough to pull it off then with my gangling legs that no socks stayed up on.
And adults can make knee socks work, otherwise, no one would wear them. Who didn't wear knee socks at some point?
I think the key is to not wear all of the twee things at once. If your top is too frou frou, it will be shit. But a button down, pullover sweater, and pleated skirt with knee socks is adorable provided you don't pick entirely too twee shoes. Oxfords would work. Flat mary janes would not.
I really want to do some 40's English war era throwback business with the knee high boots this fall. Also known as the 70s. I feel like corduroy jeggings with plaid button downs would be hella cute too.
I have absolutely no reason to wear this but I wish I did.
I am not personally a fan of the knee high sock look without boots. The pictures posted remind me of little girls playing dress up. The thigh high sock look, as shown in the Atlantic Pacific pic, I can dig a bit better than the doll look.
Don't hate me.
For other fall fashion, for me it's about the colors. I love the transition to rich earth tones. I want to check out a pair of boots soon. I have two pairs that are pretty worn.Â
Layering is another big thing for me in the fall. I want a vest that isn't so puffy. There is one on JCrew Factory that is all the rage on S&B.Â
I think it's okay if you were a fetus in 1995, otherwise, you are too old.
Also -- for those of you wide calf boot girls, when I had to go that route, I tried Duo Boots and hated them. I was so disappointed. My ankle is/was not in proportion to the size of my calf, so they (and other wide calf boots) looked awful on me because they were huge at the ankles.

Outside of boots, I had to check to see what's hot for Fall 2014. I see that Orange is on the list! This makes me happy because I love orange in the fall. Oh and wrap coats. I could use a new coat. Preferably one that looks like Liv's.

I need to know this as well...mine are too big from last year. I loved corduroy skinnies with a button down and ballet flats or boots. I bought my from NY & Company before.
I haven't seen corduroy jeggings actually. I just thought they sounded cute. So do straight leg corduroys. If someone sees them, let me know. I think AE had cords last year. Hopefully they will get some this year too.
I also recommend acquiring some oxfords. It's amazing how grown and put together I feel just by putting on oxfords and a scarf.

pixy0stix and SallyJ -- I just looked at Talbots online...no dice. They only have them left in plus size. I think they were big last fall. Maybe they'll get them back this year.

Do it NOW, asdfjkl. Then when you get them, we're going to need some pics.
YOU WANT MY HUSBAND TO LEAVE ME!! SAAAAHP!
Do NOT post and say all innocent "should I get these?" and expect people to tell you that you should not buy the cute boots. I am not the friend to take shopping to talk you out of stuff.

I need a new pair of cognac riding boots like WOAH. My Corso Como ones I got from Nordstrom about 3 years ago have seen better days, though I will say they held up damn well to the Chicago winters where I wore them basically every other day.
I'll be needing some new work clothes since I'm moving to full-time business casual. I just purged most of my dress pants because they were either ill-fitting or out of style. I'll be looking for a slim black pair, and perhaps a slim navy pair. I have a forest green, maroon, and dark gray pair already that will be back in rotation. I'll probably grab a couple more drapey cardigans and a gray blazer. I think I'm good on blouses and tops that I can wear to work. Maybe one more good staple shift dress that can be worn a million ways - I have black/gray one and a vintage mustard one that I love - I think maybe brown/tan or navy?
I'll need more opaque tights, so I'll probably hit up American Apparel or Nordstrom Rack for those. Black, brown and gray for sure. My navy and maroon ones are still in decent shape.
I'm looking forward to wearing my oxfords and flats again with tights and dresses/skirts. Which reminds me, I need maybe 1 more non-pencil skirt that I can wear to work. I've got a great black one and a gray one, so perhaps one in a brown neutral shade?
For casual wear, I need a new pair of jeans - perhaps a lighter wash skinny jean, and I think I'll be getting more wear out of my boot cut and longer/wider flare pair. My j crew leggings (navy pair and black pair) are still kicking ass and taking names, so I'll wear those a ton with tunics and long sweaters with boots. I probably need 1 or 2 good basic tunics for layering.
I know last fall/winter I got sorta boring with my color choices which is VERY unlike me, and made it so I was super bored with my clothes and in "rut" mode for most of that time - I will make sure to get back to my colorful self this year .

I thought people would tell me they were ugly. I have NO fashion sense. You have met me. I wore skinny jeans with ballet flats and a RUNNING jacket. Right now I am wearing grey short with pink and zebra striped CVS flip flops. Someone needs to make a "should I leave the house in this" app.
And yet you managed to not look like a hot mess. Now....the pink and zebra striped flip flops might be a different story. If that's what you wear at home though? No big. I may or may not have left the house wearing my H's clothes with my hair looking like a troll doll's....to run to CVS where I bumped into a lawyer I worked with. Awkward. Except I did get a call a week later from him offering me to fill in for his paralegal, so there's that. I also may or may not have gone to Trader Joe's looking like that, too.

I refuse to be judged by what I wear to sit around at home and GBCN. A black tee and skinny khakis if anyone is curious. High fashion round these parts. Don't get that excited either. The khakis were cuter ten pounds ago.

That's high fashion compared to what I wear around the house, which is usually H's clothes over boxer briefs (that are my own, TYVM, there ARE things of his I won't wear) that are gigantic on me.
