I was in college before I had a clue about the racial issues that this country still faces. Since that time I feel like my eyes have been opened to all sorts of things that I did not know were happening. Ten years ago I definitely would have said that we were post-racial. I had no idea. And unfortunately, I think that most white people are still clueless. (At least the ones I know.)
Growing up I was taught that America is post-racial. That the only race problem we still have is that "some people" won't get over slavery and allow us to move on. That affirmative action is no longer necessary and is actually a form of reverse racism. I grew up with people who truly believe that they aren't racist because they do not say the n-word and because they are polite to the black people they come across. (Which doesn't happen often. The town I grew up in is 97% white, .9% black.)
I don't know if we can "overcome" racism. We have so many problems. Where do we even start? And like summer already said, most white people don't even acknowledge the problems at all. How do you fix things that people refuse to admit are broken?
I think this is a huge issue because if I based everything on what I learned in school, I would think things were A-okay also. There are tons of books and studies and films and documentaries that tell it like it is, and schools don't talk about this. Didn't Mexican-American history get taken out of schools in the Southwest because they were "anti-American?" I mean, if schools are only allowed to make America shine, to wrap up the sins of yesterday in a neat little bow with a happy ending, then kids won't learn the truth.
Because you came out acting a plum fool at first? Yanno, 1st impressions and all.
Lol- well we disagree on that.
You didn’t like what I had to say and that’s ok with me. I’m not here to trap anyone though, I just enjoy the discussions. I’ll warn you now, I’m likely to disagree with a lot around here though, because I’m not a bleeding heart liberal as the majority seems to be.

There was something else I read here the other day that was really really interesting. It was something to the effect of white people remain racist and don’t recognize it because as a racial group, whites aren’t encouraged to have a sense of belonging or brotherhood so we don’t understand when black people band together to say enough. That just doesn’t exist in the white community. That was the gist of it anyway, as one of the stumbling blocks to eliminating racism.
This caught my attention because I think there is truth to it. White communities don’t rally around or bond over being white. We don’t teach our kids that they belong to white community at large. I suppose this is probably because doing so would be considered horribly taboo.
We talked about this but to your last point, I think it is more that white people don't embrace being white, they're more likely to embrace being Irish (and pee on your leg and tell you it's raining) or whatever heritage they have. Those communities and ties have remained strong for a lot of white people, but generally speaking, just being white isn't something I would use as an identifier for myself. I'm sure that's a privileged view in many ways since I can just simply not identify with something as obvious as the color of my skin.
I don't really think it's taboo though to have white culture. Maybe it is, IDK. But, I think it's more likely that when white people came to this country they identified with people who came from the same country and othered the other groups based on where they came from/what language they spoke vs. the color of their skin.
This could be a terribly ignorant thought, so I am open to being told to go SAT DOWN, but I think if the difference can partially be explained by how people came to this country. Most white folks came because they wanted to and chose to retain their cultures once they got here and their communities were other white people from the same area with the same background/heritage/culture. Black people on the other hand were brought here against their will and didn't have the same choice to retain their culture or choose to settle by people who were from the same area because I don't think saying people are all from Africa is the equivalent of saying people are all from Europe, which had lots of distinct and different cultures despite sharing skin color. I am borderline ignorant on the various areas of Africa, but I feel pretty confident in saying they are varied and different despite people sharing darker skin color.

Sadly, gifs are lost on me since I post from my phone.
I'm sure this is tyrion showing his displeases face though
See, the failure to understand why whites can't have things without being racist but black people can is probably one of the biggest things I can point to quickly to illustrate why racism isn't dying any time soon.
There are two things at play here and I will explain them when I get back from the grocery store.

Um...yeah, No! See my post on "Like a Girl" bc not only did you just say something I don't understand but you used a sexist slur of women's anatomy to get the idea that the US seems weak to you. Andplusalso, isn't saying that women are oppressed bc of themselves pretty much the same as saying black people are oppressed bc they are predisposed to be lazy and criminals?

Exactly. I was composing a long and thoughtful response (hence the break to refresh the page and let my thoughts settle) but now I've been derailed. I mean, come on @hayworth!

For once, I can honestly say, I spit out my tea just now!
Seriously though, they don't like to hear it but Southern racism is a palpable thing. I do not think all southerners are racist, don't get me wrong. But racism is institutionalized here and flat out accepted. It's also deliberately ignored and swept under the rug.
Imo, the primary difference between southern racism and racism in other areas of the country, is that people in other areas of the country know they are fucking racist. People in the south from what I see say and think the most racist shit on earth and then swear to the core of their little hearts that not only did they not know it was racist but they still don't believe it's racist.
And they really, honestly don't. I think deep down some of them they don't want to know but by and large, they do not get it. I'm going to count 60% of the people I go to church with in this number and I love those people.
Again, look at Paula Deen and the reaction to her bullshit.
I find this perspective really interesting because, as a white person, it hasn't always appeared that way to me.
The top 10 most segregated cities are not in the South. Wisconsin just ranked in one study as the worst state for black men. The incarceration rate for black men in Wisconsin is even more astounding than the national rate. Yet Midwesterners talk about "the South" as this foreign, backwards land filled with racist hillbillies. I never really hear anybody admit to being racist, but I feel like I heard more coded language in the Midwest and more overt language in the South.
Please know I'm NOT disputing the racism prevalent in the South (I mean, I'm not lys...my god). Just offering my experience.
Ha ha I had no idea that the use of the word pussy would be the deal breaker!
You're missing the point again. It's subconscious that you think nothing of how you use words or view others - it's almost a tangible example of the people who don't realize or take the time to examine these systemic biases. It fits right in with your questioning racial profiling by police officers.

No, I hear the point loud and clear actually. I just don't agree with it. I think everyone on this board has become very accustomed to conversing with many like minded women. I'm not like minded on a lot of the things spoken about here. I question the reputation all police officers get because of racial profiling. Of course it happens! You know what else happens? Weapon focus. That when your eyewitnesses fuck up their version of what happened because people who are in the presence of a deadly weapon tend to focus only on the weapon and misremember facts about the rest of the event. I die inside when people take eyewitness accounts as gospel- especially in the 1st 48-72 hours following an event. That's because the brain can't even property sort out/process facts until much later. So yeah, I fucking question the hard line stance about cops are are all racially profiling.
Females are smarter, but let's use a female pejorative to describe how we're making the US worse.
Noooooooo, no cognitive dissonance going on there AT ALL.
This is ridiculous. Shall we tie this to black culture and use of the n word?
It's not ridiculous in the slightest bit. They're related, and you can't see that.
The n-word isn't even part of the pussy discussion, and should not be brought into it. Which just further shows that you have no grasp of what you're trying to argue.

if we all agreed on everything we wouldn't have 38 page threads asking what white folks plan to so about these mass shooters where folks are like why should *I* do anything but then turn around and say what will the black community do to stop gang shootings etc. Contrary to what your five mins of lurking and posting has "shown" you we don't all agree on everything all of the time.
Well during my five minutes of lurking I have seen threads where you all wonder why there aren't more republicans on the board.

I'm not treating you disrespectfully. I'm saying you don't know where the starting point of your argument is, nor recognize why your argument is problematic.

HBC said old white people, just to be clear.
I know all the stats for the North and lived there and get it. Racism isn't necessarily more or less prevalent in the South, just different. There are places still trying to integrate proms. Proms in Chicago neighborhoods aren't integrated because the schools aren't. Some proms in Mississippi aren't integrated because the White parents refuse. Same problem, different manifestation. And when I was in Mississippi, my cousin had an actual cross burned on her lawn by the Klan about 15 years ago. But Mississippi is also different from say Memphis or Atlanta.
