I forgot to add that the reason you have white things is because you wouldn't let us join the party and went through deliberate lengths to exclude us. So keep your white stuff. We'll have black stuff.
Look at that damned Lifetime movie about Aaliyah. We can't even have the stuff that should by definition BELONG TO US.
If you haven't already, you might spend some time with this piece by Ta-Nehesi Coates. It explains a good deal of where we are now and how we got here.
I think the problem is that you assume people don't like your OPINIONS when what people don't like is your tone and delivery. I am trying to look past that but others ain't having it. Also, we have been together for a long time and there are some inside jokes and things, too. What you called douche behavior is normal behavior here.
You can do with that what you will.
In all honesty- I can't fathom what was wrong with my tone and delivery in this thread until the end. I'm getting a little defensive at the end for sure, but damn I was respectful and thoughtful in my discussion until then

Here's the thing. I don't think people would have been stopped in their tracks had you said "feminization of America". I don't know that people would agree with that claim, but it wouldn't have made people do the face. Again, it's not the word itself necessarily, it's the way you used it. It's akin to someone who is gay rolling up into a room full of gay people and using the word f-g as an insult. And then getting indignant and defensive when people are giving you the side eye for it.
In the end, using that word in particular tells a story about who you are and those you choose to associate with. People like to claim that words don't matter all that much but they do. They really do.
Funny that you think I give any fucks about "helping myself"
I'm beginning to think you're not really interested in a dialogue at all, but in stirring the pot by "being provocative". Really you just come across like an asshole. I don't get it.
epphd is like one of the nicest people around here, so when she says you're coming across like an asshole, you better check yourself.
And FWIW, I am totally cool with diverse viewpoints here and welcome them unless your name is Lys.
Serious post! I will admit that as a white person I haven't got the foggiest damn clue what I can do to help the cause along. Other than telling my idiot friends and relatives to get bent, check themselves, STFU, whatever, it's an overwhelming undertaking to think about for sure. Right now I'm trying to focus on my girls and making sure they not only understand their fortunate positions in this world, but also grow up to be accepting and loving of their fellow humans. And to have a love of gifs.

Sorry I got off track....
I think this is good tho. It has to be cultivating some level of understanding and empathy with your kids.

It went south for me when you were like "why can't I use the word pussy when black people can use the n-word?"
But I already had it in mind not to take this post seriously after your posts the other night when you bitched (again) about the board being leftist commie pinkos and also hysterical. And when you were like "it's not just police who kill blacks; security guards and George Zimmerman do it, too." Your tone and attitude sucked then, and so I disbelieve you would turn to hysterical and factless women for an earnest discussion.

Just like I said, you came out the gate acting a plum fool and you want somebody to take you seriously. Chile please.
I think for real progress to be made, people in general (specifically white people) need to be really honest about more hidden racism and how that has hurt minority populations. Too many people hide behind "that's not how things are now" when there have been policies that lasted far too long and hurt too many people.
For example, near where I live, for years there were racial zoning laws that prevented African Americans from living in certain areas nearest many of the jobs. Because they couldn't purchase homes there, they weren't able to get as well-paying jobs. They also didn't have the wealth building that could have come from home ownership in those areas. It kept many of them at a certain level of poverty.
However, many people won't acknowledge this. They say "it's not like that anymore" or "young people today weren't affected by that" but things like that do affect multiple generations.
I want to like your post b/c I agree with your argument but I just can't like your middle paragraph.

also, remember that the inability to buy into the community via real estate also contributes to the lack of representation in local government. Renters don't run for city council, for mayor, for the school board, etc.

This is how I feel too. I'm working hard to teach my daughter to respect everyone regardless of race, religion, economic/social position, etc, and to understand the huge leg up she has as an upper middle class white girl in the NYC area. That the opportunities she has been given on a silver platter means she needs to give back to others.
I don't post much in these threads, but I'm always reading. The more I learn from you all, the more I hope to share with others and do what I can to facilitate meaningful discussion on race relations IRL that opens up minds. I've been very humbled reading the race threads and embarrassed I never saw my white privilege growing up.
All I can say is I bet you guys are really fun at parties.
I'm going to stick around though. I think this board could use some new voices in here.
You can tell me to go sat down or whatever else nonsense, but I can see at least some of you do want to engage in some discussion with a new person who doesn't necessarily fit the typical persona around here.
Of course things are "better," but the bar isn't slavery anymore. That question feels like black people are supposed to acknowledge how good they have it compared to their ancestors and be thankful. Ew.

Oh ffs. No the question was just a fucking question because I was curious what black people thought about the state of racism today vs. where we have come from.
Ew to you trying to turn it into something insidious.

Boo, travel back up thread where I explained WHY this makes black folks feel that they should be thankful they they aren't in chains and Massa can sell them up river. Racism doesn't only equal what was done back in 1860. It evolves and changes in so many ways.
All blacks didn't start out as slaves when brought here. Some were granted the same privileges as indentured servants. Overtime, slavery evolved to become attached to your skin color. Not only that, slavery was attached to your religious status as well. At one point in time, as slaves became Christians, folks were like - wait no we can't enslave other Christians, but that became ignored and skin color was the bar (I don't have a link; this info is from a lecture I attended by a friend of mine who is a Black History professor at a local college).
It's race and it's impact is ever evolving in society. That's why it's, as I said earlier, intellectually lazy to ask "Isn't it better than it was before." Yes, we're not whipped and sold - BUT - there are new challenges - the disproportionate number of arrests of black males; police brutality; the disproportionate number of suspensions of black students; and in my very own city, the DOJ has taken a hard look at those running our juvenile justice system because black juveniles are given harsher punishment than white juveniles for the same offenses. That is a problem of systematic racism. And it gets ignored because people only see Civil Rights and racial injustice through one lens. You can't ONLY focus on MLK, Rosa and Thurgood.
I don't think I'm changing the subject but I believe the term "white trash" is racist. Does everyone agree?
edit: racist against blacks, not whites
im confused by your edit. white trash is racist against blacks?
Yes. If someone is being trashy why would you say white trash? Why not just trash. With the implication being that black people are trashy and that is why you have to differentiate.

No, no. White Trash isn't a slur against black folks. It's used to refer to poor, white people not deemed good enoguh by their own folks. See - The Help and how they treated that one lady that Ms. Minnie ended up working for. They are considered outcasts of white society.
