I had a friend and her fiance over for dinner last night, and made Irish stew... after we all sat down with our bowls, the guy asked if we had hot sauce (we never use it, so no we don't). Then he asked if we had salt. All without even tasting it. I was really irked by it, but my H didn't seem to be, and neither did my friend. Thoughts?
I don't know if I'd do this in someone's house but I'd certainly do it in a restaurant. For instance, I always put hot sauce on my eggs and salt my fries before I even take a bite.
Why did it bother you? Everyone likes different things. He may put hot sauce and salt on his cereal for all you know.
True. Hmm... I guess I've always been taught that if someone takes the time to make food for you, you eat it the way it's presented. So it seems rude to me to ask for seasoning without even tasting it.

I wouldn't care at all, but because I know other people can get all insulted about it, I usually won't alter the food I'm served at someone else's house.
I just like steak sauce, damn it! It doesn't mean your steak is not good!
Wouldn't bother me. My sister puts salt on everything before trying it - she just likes things really salty.
I've joked that I should buy my husband a salt lick. We can't even share fast food fries b/c he salts them within an inch of their lives. gross.
When my sister leaves, the entire area around where she ate is covered in salt. She puts it on so vigorously, it flies everywhere. I don't understand the need for that much salt, but to each their own!

I feel like I've gone out to eat with a lot of people that salt their food before they taste it. It DEFINITELY annoys me when they salt chips that are to be shared at a Mexican restaurant. *I* don't want my chips salted. Now that is fucking annoying.

What in the world? This is a tad much. "Rude to ask for seasoning?"

I've never been taught this. I'm guessing others were never taught this as well. I like to eat food how I enjoy it.

yes, that's the only time one can be offended. when you're forced to eat their additionally flavored item.
Yeah, not exactly the same situation as the OP but I'm chatty tonight.

Hmm. Okay. I wasn't annoyed to the point of being like He can't ever come again. Fuck that! But I was rubbed the wrong way. @smace's comment made me wonder if this is something I got from my narcissistic mom. I'm totally cool with getting over it.
Are people allowed syrup with their waffles in your house? or only if you pour it on first.
People want to pour their own syrup?? That's just crazytalk! Hah!
But really, that's totally fine because syrup goes WITH waffles, and everyone likes different amounts. I get that makes no sense with the other thought. :^)

Wut? No. This is not even remotely the same.
Yes, it's insulting to the chef if you feel the need to change the taste of what is presented to you. It's as if you are saying the dish is not good enough as is. To season something before you even taste it is in poor taste (see what I did there?).
I would probably overlook it in my house but I would side eye the person who did it in an upscale restaurant.
