I am an -ie which I always assumed was more common (never met anyone in real life that uses a y and there was a TON of Katies growing up) but when people write my name they put a y or i instead of an ie more often then not.
Me too. However, I always thought it was a difference between Katherine and Kathryn, hence Katie vs Katy.
NOPE! I'm Kathryn but use Katie. At least for me there was no correlation, just parental preference.
ETA: My mom wanted to legally name me Katie and my dad wouldn't let her. He said when I was 30 I would feel silly being called that. i have tried to transition to both Kathryn and Kate and neither have stuck.
I do prefer the Katherine spelling though and was always mad at my parents for not using that spelling.
There aren't too many variations of Lauren, but people who say "Lor-in" get my stAnk eye
I've read all the confused responses and just want to say I'm with you. My name is Laura, not Lora!
Would you pronounce Laura and Lara the same? I've spent way too much time saying this and Lauren now. Laaaahhhhren. Looohhhren. Loooore-en. LARRRen. Totally said that last one in a pirate voice.
To add to the confusion, DH's name is Lee. I tell people he's Morlee and I'm Leslee.
When I first saw you post way back on TK, I freaked because my college BFF had your exact name (assuming Paul is your last name). I was like "aw, shit- busted!" Lol

It's my maiden name. lol.
Huh, I always assumed you were paying homage to the guitar/guitarist.

My mom insists on calling me Kate, because i am "too old" for Katie. I was too old for Katie at 15 according to her lol.

No, I say La (like in fa la la la la) ra for Laura. Lara to me is Lair-a. But that is based solely on Lara Flynn Boyle - I've never actually met anyone named Lara.
But do you say Anna like Princess Anna? It is the right way!
I always thought for it to be pronounced that way it was usually only spelled with 1 N? No?
In Spanish it is spelled with only one N, but that is because Spanish hates double consonants. Every other European language except Spanish uses two Ns and pronounces it more or less the same way (they way it is said in Frozen). The nasal-y pronunciation is just something English speakers, and especially Americans I think, have decided to do differently.
Anyway, The double consonant does not change the vowel sound! Forgive my slight rage, but people tried to tell me I spell/pronounce my name wrong ALL THE TIME when I was growing up. Some people STILL try to do it. It pisses me off, a lot. And I don't think the Ana spelling or Anne-uh pronunciation are wrong, they are just not the way I spell/say my name.

My mom wanted to name me Katherine and call me Katie but my dad said no it was too Irish. Lol. So I am Melanie Katherine instead. If I have a daughter she will be Katherine and called Katie!

Yep. I spend so much time telling people how to spell my name correctly that it irks me when I see it spelled differently. It's a PH people, not F! Lol
