re Lauren and Lorin. (Also applies to Megan and Megyn). In my mind, the two are not the same names and don't phonetically sound the same. "an" does not sound exactly like "yn". "au" is not "or".
I know a Katye. I call her "Katie" in my mind - that's the visual for the word I say. When I read her name, I have to mentally adjust not to say "Katy-ee" or "Kah-tee-a" or "Kate-yee".
My first name is two names put together, no matter how I introduce myself people will use half the name. It is not a hard name, they just shorten it regardless of me repeating it to them. Small wonder why I go by my middle name.
The only other version of my name I've seen is with one l.
The day I see Mychelle or something like that I will cry.
Lady I used to work with had a daughter Michaela. Then she had Michenzie. Then Michenna. So they'd match. I think people probably didn't have boat loads of trouble with Michenzie. But Michenna is downright cruel.
Andrey. Lol. I can see how it happens, but he's been dealing with it his whole life and he gets so irritated that people think he's a dude named Audrey.
Quoting for two reasons. Andrey is an AWESOME name. Love it. War and Peace!
And, my H loathes his name too. It's Todd. LOL. He thinks it makes him sound "like a douchebag".
My daughter has a Maeby (pronounced like maybe) in her class.

Arrested Development.
Last one I promise.
This reminds me of Mae Mobley from the Help. I now know a little Ann Mabry (first and middle, both used at all times) and a Mary Marbry (same...they're in the south y'all).
I know the Ann *middle* and Mary *middle* has a rich and long tradition and history (I grew up with several). But not the Mabry/Mobley/Marbry. They're naming children after a family name in a book that the book doesn't even bother to explain. I find that grating.

My name is normal but not common. There are two normal ways to spell it and mine is the less common one. I forgive most people if they misspell it, but I give a major side eye to people who misspell it at work. They have had six years to figure it out. I also get blamed for not responding to emails that people have sent it to the mispelled version of my email address. It doesn't help that my last name is a name that could have an 'e' at the end. That confuses people too.
I get a variety of spellings and pronunciations. In the south, a lot of people who have the same spelling as I do pronounce it Nine-uh. Wrong and sounds terrible to me.
The only thing that ever surprises me about my name is when a white girl has it. It's not even really "ethnic" but I'm still all "her name is WHOWHATNOW?!" And then I feel the need to evaluate myself because white people can have my name too and it doesn't mean somebody is appropriating my life.
My way is the right way! Really, I've always thought it looks prettier and more symmetrical with two Is. (No offense, Ohhmm(bligo)!) I think Kristin and Kristen were similar in popularity around the time I was born, but now I'm pretty sure Kristen is more common, and it seems most people default to that spelling. My BIL's new wife is named Kristen. I mean, of all the fish in the sea!
The only other variations I've seen are Kristyn and Cristen. The Kristyn was my age, so her name was given long before the gratuitous Y usage got out of hand. And spelled with a C is so rare, and yet I am constantly asked, "with a C?"
It's one of my biggest pet peeves. My name is a pretty popular and I actually think the way I spell it is the most common but there are other ways and people are constantly getting wrong. It especially annoys when they spell it wrong when they are replying to my emails... It's right there spelled correctly!
I know this wasn't the point of this thread, but I'm right there with you. A good chunk of the birthday messages I get on FB have my name spelled wrong too.
I had an Indian exbf who told his parents my name and they thought I was Indian also. That worked until they met and then he dumped me two days later after over a year of dating. heh
Apparently the name is Spanish, Russian, Hebrew (?), Indian, etc. Still not so common though! But it has a lot of origins.

Another DELETED weighing in. I prefer my spelling though. I too often get asked if its with a "c". Its not that common people!
DH is another A----i. TO the previous poster. I'm surprised he gets Audrey. Mine gets "Ann-dree" uuuuuuuuuuggggh. *shudder* How hard is Andre? Its just the Euro spelling people!!
Yes. But people do it allllll the time. It has an uncommon spelling.
Same here.

IIRC, you and I have the same spelling, yes?
People also mispronounce it all the time and then try to use examples like eat and meat as to why I'm pronouncing my name wrong. Then I'm like, "heather, feather, weather motherfuckers."

As a fellow Allison, the botching of my name annoys the hell out of me. But nothing annoys me more than parents that intentionally butcher it. There is a new CNN anchor who spells it Alisyn. That hurts my eyes.
I think Allisons/Alisons tend to be a little more sensitive to how people spell it too.
One time going thru airport security, the guy told my husband that he spelled his name wrong! My husband is Brian.... the guy checking ID's was Bryan. LOL

I'm a "Kristin" with a C. No H. Cristin. My sil is a Kristin.
I am a "Kristen" I did go to college with a Kristyn. She actually changed the spelling to be "different". I always gets asked about the C as well. I would never even think to spell it that way. But yes, very popular name when I was growing up. I think there were 7 of us total in my graduating class.
