So, Re: TOTing not on the 31st, our mayor actually addressed why our TOTing is this weekend instead of next Friday. He was asked why not do it on Halloween (and why it's on a school night), and this was his response "We actually attempted to do just that my first year in office. Halloween fell on a Wednesday and parents with children in CCD were upset. We then discovered we could not have it Friday night or Saturday night either due to football games. Monday is out because City Council and several other agencies have their weekly meetings. We settled on Sunday evenings as the best option left available."
I'm a bad townie because I have no clue what CCD is though.
CCD is Catholic classes that you have to go to for forever in order to get confirmed. It's typically on Wednesday nights during the school year.
But if you let Halloween just happen on whatever day it falls on it shouldn't matter since the day will change every year. I can't imagine living somewhere where your whole town shuts down because of a football game.
Do people in England get annoyed at all by the royal family?? I mean they must spend a shit load of tax dollars (errr pounds) just being fashionable lol
I guess I just don't see the point of the royal family at all.
Based on a very unscientific compilation of conversations I had with Londoners, they don't hate the royal family, but see them more as an institution. Doesn't stop them from complaining about them, but to be fair, Londoners will complain about anything. It's more of a "I can pick on my little brother, but if you do, thems fighting words!"
I mean, other halloweeny activities can occur any day. Like we are going to my husbands work trunk or treat tomorrow night. But Halloween neighborhood tot must happen on Halloween? I'm so confused by changing the dates of trick or treating
I don't understand how anyone has an opinion one way or the other about Kate Middleton. She's pretty. But I don't keep up with her opinions or activities or life in general...I have a hard enough time keeping up with my actual friends and family. As far as I know she hasn't done anything particularly offensive in public, or anything particularly world-changing, so I guess I feel neutral about her??
The Halloween discussion always confuses me, too. I don't understand the phrase, "in my town halloween is scheduled for Sunday..." Like, does someone put out fliers? Are there PSAs? In my town everyone goes TOTing on Halloween, because it's Halloween. It's not a civic holiday. If our town council sent out an email saying, "Halloween will henceforth only be held on a Sunday!" everyone would laugh at them and carry on with our normal lives, where Halloween falls on the 31st every single year.
One of the orderlies at the hospital when Violet was born was an offender. All she did was come into my room far enough to change the garbage and take the linens and her perfume stench pervaded the entire room. Not cool.
Oh no. there should be a no scent policy in healthcare settings. Maybe that's an UO!
I think I'v said this here before, but I hate when my inlaws are at my house for many reasons, but a major one is that their cologne and perfume take over the house. And my kids smell like them because they hug them and what not. I think it was TrudyCampbell who had this issue, too.
My OB office has this policy. They remind everyone when they schedule and then confirm appointments. I love it.
my principal lays the cologne on thick. The only good part is that it makes him really easy to track around the school
Unless the weather is absolutely atrocious. Then I could see postponing til the following night or something.
Yea, like hurricane sandy. But a FOOTBALL GAME? I'll never get over this. It's like that time I found out people call all soda "coke".
That's weird too
"hey you want a coke?" "certainly not! I will have a DIET coke if you have one please!" "so you will have a coke then ?" "umm. .... Just water please"*
*risk of receiving actual coke and being forced to drink 50 grams of sugar out of politeness deemed too great
I imagine kids getting snatched into trunks. I also teach my kids not to take candy from strangers in cars. Hellooooo, mixed messages. I mean, it's much more appropriate to have them wear a mask, bang on a stranger's door, and demand things while threatening to make the strangers smell their feet if they don't comply with the demands.
its another opportunity for me to dress the kids up. It's in the covered work garage so doesn't matter if the weather is not great. Matilda will have a blast. I can eat all her candy. And his work also provides hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn and cider, and they play a kids movie in the building!
I think it's wonderful!
last year we did a trunk but I won't be doing that again as it's too much effort.
I think trunk or treating if you know you are in a Stephen king movie is probably a bad idea though. I mean come on, anything could happen and probably will.

As a work event for the kids in addition to trick or treating, that's fun! But a neighborhood gathering in some random church parking lot as a trick or treating alternative does not sound fun to me.

Oh I see! Yes I am against it replacing actual neighborhood trick or treat. Only as an extra trick or treat opportunity
We do that at 2-3 places and we also go to Publix and play games. Lol
For younger kids I can see it being okay. I just feel bad for like age 8+ kids having to go to a parking lot and get candy from someone's car trunk while their friends walk around the neighborhood.
Not all kids live in suburban neighborhoods. Lots of kids live in widespread rural areas or unsafe urban areas where trunk or treating is a great safe alternative.

The kids should have to walk further to earn that candy :-p

I think it's odd when suburban streets don't have sidewalks. DH and I lived in a neighborhood where sidewalks were seemingly placed at random. I'm too used to master planned cities.

I hate when towns have sidewalks, but no crosswalks. Like how am I supposed to get to the next sidewalk? Walk on the grass?!?

I've learned so much today. Teal Pumpkins and now trunk or treating!
So our neighborhood organizes a little Halloween thing for the kids because for many years, they were all small and it was a way to get the neighborhood together and allow the kids to trick or treat before bedtime. We still have regular Halloween trick or treating.
Who enforces or decides that Halloween is moved? The city? The county? The neighborhood association? How do they communicate and enforce such things?

By crossing the street? I'm having a hard time visualizing this scenario.

I grew up in a city without sidewalks. SOme asphalt bike paths and random sidewalks on one major road, but for the most part no separate place for pedestrians.
My current neighborhood has sidewalks on every other street. Ours is without. So bizarre!

Our new neighborhood purposely doesn't have sidewalks. It's too far from town to walk anywhere, and nobody wants to shovel them in our snowy northern winters.
