"Bye babies. Be good. Love you. See you after work." - I swear they know this means it'll be several hours before I get home.
"Bye babies. Be good. Love you. Be home soon." - I use this when I'm only going to be gone for a little bit. I have no idea if they get it, but it makes me feel better to distinguish it for them.
When I put him in his crate before work I tell him that Miss Jackie (his dog walker) will be over in a little bit.
Then any time as I walk away from the crate down the hallway I yell for him to be a good boy and that I love him. Every time. I may have even run back in the house the one day I forgot to say it.
"Bye babies! I'll be back later!" to the birds and "See ya snuffles, I love you! Don't poop on anything, okay?" to Hobokin. If he is looking cold, I cover him with a blanket and tuck him in.

No. I t to make it as nonchalant as possible, especially in our new place. He has separation anxiety, and it's not good to draw attention to me leaving and making a big deal out of it.
Same thing when I come home. I don't speak to him until he settles down. I let him follow me everywhere, even the bathroom, but I say very little to him while he's all riled up.

I love this thread! I've been missing my dog a lot, but tonight it's been bad. I used to tell him I loved him, that he was my favorite doggie, and to take care of everyone (3 cats) and the house. I love seeing that I'm not alone in this ritual.

Usually it's "Bye Charles!" when I leave after 6AM. I'm grumpy and passive aggressive when I have to leave for work at 5am, though, so then it is: "Bye Charlie! Enjoy being a freeloader while Mama works!" Said brightly, so he wags his tail. I am sort of a dick.

Usually it's just "I'll be right back okay?". If DS isn't with me when I leave I give them a quick scratch behind the ear right before I leave. DS is usually to squirmy and is all focused on his shoes and his bag and is all must go now!
I used to tell them to be good and pet them before I left. Now that we are down to my older dog that's basically a cat, I just go. She hardly raises her head off the couch or bed to acknowledge me leaving.
