H and I went to the same college (we met there). While it is a nice (but cheap) school depending on what she wanted to do she could find better in state. I enjoyed college very much, I want her to as well but at a place that fits her.
Yes if we stay in state. I want them to go to a flagship in state school. Of course I am open to other options but that would be ideal. We are not saving enough for private (most likely)
This game is so much more fun if we don't think about the cost. My alma mater is not cheap. I have three children. I can't imagine not trying to pay for all of them to go there if they wanted, but I don't know how the hell we would pull it off. It makes me kind of sick to think about it.
I went to a pubic ivy and loved it but it's expensive for a state school and we no longer live in that state. I can't lie, I'd love it if they chose to go there.
DH went to a really great school for his field but it's in a rough urban area so... I'd like the area to improve in the next 13 years or so. My parents and siblings also went to DH's alma mater.

I don't know...I think single-sex education was fine for me (my major was actually based at Columbia, so I got plenty of both), but it's a choice she'll have to make for herself. If you like city life, though, you can't beat NYC as a student.

No.
My parents went there, my brother and I went there, my H went there, I went to grad school there, and my mom was a professor there. But no, I don't want my kids to go there.
I had significant problems with my department in grad school and my mom had a successful eeoc suit against her department.

Both Dh and I graduated from a big ten school in the midwest. It was a great school and I would love it if they went there. However we are surrounded by great state schools here and if we paid out of state tuition for our alma mata, we might as well be sending them to one of the exclusive private schools nearby. Also I really doubt our NC native children are going to be thrilled to attend a school in the middle of a corn field in IL where it is freezing cold! lol! They will be expected to forever cheer for their sports teams, though ; ) Go ILLINI!
No, it's too close to where we live now and right down the street from DH's office. Plus I wasn't at all happy there, despite it being a good school in general and good for my major. Fit is important, and I basically went there b/c it was affordable and the state school with the best reputation/highest admission standards. Not good. DH's school is too small for my taste, but he enjoyed his experience. I think most of that is due to his involvement in his fraternity, however, and he could have gotten that experience at a lot of schools. ETA: Also, his school is sooo expensive, so unless my ILs die, I don't see us paying for our kids to go there, at least not fully on our dime.
I really hope we're in a position to pay for it. It was crazy expensive when I went, and it's only going to get more so.
It's also super selective, so I really hope they could get in. It was selective when I went there too, but I feel like schools are getting harder to get into.
I do alumni interviews for my college (of high schoolers applying -- everyone who applies gets an interview), and I'm in awe of how much these kids do. And most of them don't get in
It's funny, one of the questions the kids always ask is if I liked it, and my response is always to be shocked that they would even ask because who wouldn't love their school? But I know not all schools are like that.
I have done at least a dozen alumni interviews, and only one kid I have interviewed has ever been accepted. . But the legacy admission rate is like 3x the normal admission rate, which helps some. Still depressing, though.

I wouldn't mind them going to either of our alma maters. But hopefully they'd get scholarships, and we'd be able to kick in the rest of the money when they're ready to go, like our parents did for us. The prices where pretty out of control even back then, they are astronomical to look at now.

Miami University is one of eight original public ivys based on the book published in the 80s. Sorry you disagree?

It is depressing! I have only ever had one kid accepted too. And he was, like, beyond a superstar.
I wonder if they care about being a legacy if the alum rarely donates money?

It does sound much more competitive nowadays with the common app. It's easy to apply to 20-30 schools. When I read about what it takes to get into the ivied (perfect grades perfect PLUS some crazy talent) I'm just like eek
For some reason I never thought about that. Do all schools have the same application now? When I was applying to schools (1996) the common app existed, but only some schools took it and most schools required additional essay questions.
Not having to write different essays for each school would definitely make it easier to apply to a bunch of schools. I think I only applied to 5.
I guess you can all think the PUBLIC ivy thing is stupid. I won't disagree, God knows my undergrad is full of douches lol. Just want to be sure to distinguish from THE flagship university of the state(cough cough, I love you@ starry)

My understanding is that it is legacy that matters and that donations don't make a difference unless you are talking millions, but I am sure it varies some by school.
I loved my college experience. I'd be ecstatic if DD went there so I could be that old, washed-up alum waxing nostalgic every time I went to visit.
My H didn't love his college experience as much, but the name of his university has opened up a ton of doors for him. If DD got in, we'd be fools not to let her attend.

Since I will never be in a position to donate millions of dollars to anything, that sounds good to me :-)
I don't care either way. H did get one of his degrees at Harvard though so I hope if any of my kids get in there they get some scholarship money because it is pricey!
Sure. I had a fabulous time and didn't hate anything too serious about it. H went to a tech school that was also pretty awesome, so if they want something in that field, have at it too.
I honestly have no strong opinions on my children's choice of school.

I don't understand not "being a huge fan." Does this mean you are a small fan? Do you dislike them entirely? Why? I mean, it's college - it's supposed to be about education. Do you think they do a poor job?
Sorry! No, I'm not anti. I just was trying to explain that I'm not some huge Ivy supporter and thats why I have my panties in a twist, lol. I'm Ivy indifferent

We have a family joke about Miami of Ohio calling themselves the Harvard of the Midwest... more like the Harvard of Southwestern Ohio. Lol sorry to holly116 just a joke.
Yeah we have lots of starry's secret school jokes too. All in good fun
