I was 3rd generation, and I have a lot of love for my undergrad alma mater. I also think it was worth the money for me. So it'd be awesome to have a wee 4th generationer. OTOH, $$$$$, zomg. So there are pluses to it not falling out that way.
If s/he's going to go Ivy, I'd love it if it were mine. Rivalries run deep, yo. But depending on personality, goals, talents, and 8 million other factors, Hypothetical Hobbes may not be interested and that is more than fine.
It's also super selective, so I really hope they could get in. It was selective when I went there too, but I feel like schools are getting harder to get into.
I do alumni interviews for my college (of high schoolers applying -- everyone who applies gets an interview), and I'm in awe of how much these kids do. And most of them don't get in
It's funny, one of the questions the kids always ask is if I liked it, and my response is always to be shocked that they would even ask because who wouldn't love their school? But I know not all schools are like that.
I do those too, and yeah, it even makes me worry for my future kids just going through our very competitive public school district, let alone applying to competitive universities (if they choose to). The lists of AP everything under the sun, clubs, activities, blah blah blah ... it is crazy. And yes, so very few get in. I don't know if the application coaching stuff has sprung up in the last 15 years or if I was blissfully ignorant when I applied, but it is intense.

DH and I went to different schools 1200 miles apart, but both great schools with great social/football programs as well as academics and I'd love it if our kids went to either. Dh's is only 30 minutes from here but super duper expensive, mine is an 18 hour drive but a great, well priced state school, so I sort of lean towards my alma mater
Yes! We met there and being a Hokie is a lifestyle, not just an education. Lol. It is very much engrained in our lives and would love that for him too.
I'm a Hokie too! I love VT and Blacksburg SO much! I hate that I live so far away now
Miami University is one of eight original public ivys based on the book published in the 80s. Sorry you disagree?
but why use that term? I've never heard an ivy graduate actually refer to themselves like that. They just say they went to yale or whatever. Especially since there are now 30 "public ivies" the term really doesn't mean much and just sounds pompus and self-important. I think everyone now knows you can get an ivy quality education without going to one.
Well I disagree with many things published in books. So I'm not sure how throwing out the fact that a book uses the phrase in reference to Miami of Ohio proves anything. I still find the term to be hilarious.
I guess you can all think the PUBLIC ivy thing is stupid. I won't disagree, God knows my undergrad is full of douches lol. Just want to be sure to distinguish from THE flagship university of the state(cough cough, I love you@ starry)
I won't get into this here because I have many feelings and ultimately MU cares a lot more about this debate than my super secret school
Eta: ultimately I am thrilled to live in a state with at least four really good state schools (OSU, OU, MU, and UC). So joking aside we are lucky.
Not to mention the amazing private schools... Especially if you are into basketball...

I really don't care, but I hope my kids go to school close to home. I went to the community college first which I think was a really wise decision and gave nd time to figure out what I wanted to do without spending a ton.
My parents helped some with the cost at community college, but I paid for most if it on my own in cash. We will be paying for our children though, but may not let them know that we should have it all for a state school.
I am indifferent. It's an excellent school and DH went there as well, but that shouldn't be the only criteria DD and DS consider when selecting a school. It's in a large city, which they may not want after growing up in NY, and it's a fairly urban campus, so no sprawling college lawns and the kind of campus life that is more typical elsewhere. I enjoyed my time there, but sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have gone to a small, liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere or to a school in a completely different part of the country from where I grew up. My parents were very big on insisting that I couldn't go to any college they had never heard of, which ruled out a great many places.
Yes! I loved UW and how can you pass up a great instate school right in your backyard. Actually I probably would be happy with any in state public university. If she wanted to be a couger it would be a adjustment but I would live...maybe
Can we at least agree to call it Miami U and not Miami of Ohio?
Just out of curiosity, but why? For people not from Ohio, Miami = Florida. If you told someone in say, NY or CA that younwent to Miami U, I strongly suspect they'd assume you meant some school in Florida. Seems like calling it Miami of Ohio clarifies easily what school you are referring to?
We would love if the girls went to our school. But right now, it's out-of-state, so we'd be cool with them picking a really solid in-state school, too.

Mainly because the school is Miami U and it's annoying.

Ok.
If I call it Miami here (I live in FL) people will be very very confused, lol.
I would absolutely support them going there but I wouldn't push it. I went to our flagship state school so if would be great if he was accepted. We'll see in 16 years!
I would not mind if people thought I went to the University of Miami (Florida). That private school shit is expensive!
Related, if I started a private school I would definitely not give it a public school name.
Likely the founders of the one in FL didn't know about the one in Ohio when they started. Kinda like how we have 5 or 6 towns named Washington in a small state like New Jersey.

I just looked up the school, and their website is www.miamioh.edu. It includes Ohio in the website!
Anecdote alert! I once did an internship in DC with a girl who went to UC Davis. Whenever people would ask her where she went to school, her answer was always, "Davis." Which earned her blank stares. But for the whole summer she never changed her answer to "UC Davis," which would have helped clarify things. So she continued to get blank stares are all these people in DC tried to rack their brains for a college called "Davis."
I get that Miaminis different since the name of your school doesn't include Ohio, but surely you can understand people being confused?
If I call it Miami here (I live in FL) people will be very very confused, lol.
Am I allowed to call it Miami (the one in Ohio)?
I'm really not as invested in this as it seems. It's a long standing thing sort of like The Ohio State University.
I suspect if you said Miami U to someone in Florida they would either say it's U of Miami or they would know you are talking about another school.
I really don't care this much but I'm certain Starry knows which way it is.
Well I think "THE Ohio State University" is obnoxious....and I grew up a OSU fan. My mom is from Columbus and her whole family went there. I still find it pretentious.
So there.
But I really don't have a leg to stand on because my alma mater is REALLY obnoxious.
stealthmom - any chance you went to umbc? I had a study abroad roommate who constantly said she went to "the honors college" which made the rest of us snort.
I am lol-ing at the Miami University comments. My mom went there and was like you should check it out. I was like no chance am I going to the same school where my mom got a degree in Home Economics (seriously that is her degree). Once I actually toured the school and researched it, I was like wow my mom actually went to a good school. I still didn't apply there though. But since I have so many relatives in Ohio, a few of my cousins went there.
I would love for my hypothetical spawn to attend my university, but I worry about putting too much pressure on them to go there. My cousin just got accepted for the class of 2019, completing the family tree on my mom's side. (both grandparents, my mom and uncle, and all four cousins)
Mr. GT's college is too expensive and I would discourage them to go there unless it is free (he got a scholarship, cause his mom was a professor).
Absolutely, we would be ecstatic! I'm getting a tshirt that says "class of 2037." In fact, in our 12 week ultrasound, the baby is making a thumbs up, which is my alma mater's hand sign, and DH used that as proof that our kid is an Aggie already.
