DH and I met in college and we love love love our alma mater. I would definitely encourage it, but it was a small religiously-affiliated liberal arts school, so I would never force it on them if it wasn't the right fit.
The more I think about it and read all your replies about multiple generations at the same school, I think it would be freaking awesome if DD and DS went to the University of Havana, like their grandfather did. This is a possibility given all the changes happening these days.
stealthmom - any chance you went to umbc? I had a study abroad roommate who constantly said she went to "the honors college" which made the rest of us snort.
I am lol-ing at the Miami University comments. My mom went there and was like you should check it out. I was like no chance am I going to the same school where my mom got a degree in Home Economics (seriously that is her degree). Once I actually toured the school and researched it, I was like wow my mom actually went to a good school. I still didn't apply there though. But since I have so many relatives in Ohio, a few of my cousins went there.
st. Mary's college of maryland "a public honors college" lolz.
But ell oh ell that a umbcer took the designation seriously.
Can we at least agree to call it Miami U and not Miami of Ohio?
Just out of curiosity, but why? For people not from Ohio, Miami = Florida. If you told someone in say, NY or CA that younwent to Miami U, I strongly suspect they'd assume you meant some school in Florida. Seems like calling it Miami of Ohio clarifies easily what school you are referring to?
Because it's not the name of the school. Why would you insist on calling it by it's made up name instead of the real name? The school in Florida is called University of Miami ands it was founded in 1925. The school in Ohio is called Miami University and was founded in 1809.

tons of schools aren't called by their real names. My school is mostly called Notre Dame instead of the university of Notre fame. Heck when I lived in Baltimore I often had people call it the Notre dame in Indiana, since Notre dame to them was the Baltimore school. It was no big deal. Like I said, every Loyola has to.
Miami people need to understand that outside of The Midwest most people think of the FL school because of Athletics. So clarifying is helpful.
I also understand that it might be some slight from OSU people who don't accept that Miami is a better school, but for the rest of us it is not a slight.
I'd be thrilled if they got in and it was the right school for them but the campus is very homogeneous and elitist so I'm also open to them choosing a larger (cheaper) school.

Well, to be fair, I don't really call it anything :-) But just because I don't really have much occasion to refer to it. A girl I went to high school with went there, and she made a big deal about making sure people knew she was going to Miami OF OHIO, not a school in Florida. We were in Maryland, so not super close geographically to either school. I just assumed that's what everyone called it. I also feel like I've heard it referred to as Miami of Ohio on TV -- maybe sports?
This thread has taught me lots of things. I had no idea people who went to Miami don't like it to be called Miami of Ohio.
I also have never heard the term public ivy before. Is that a Midwest thing too? If you asked me to name a "public ivy," UVa would be the only thing that would come to mind.
But I still don't understand why football players tell viewers they went to THE Ohio State University. Is that supposed to be a dig at other Ohio schools?

No. I went to my school because it was a good small engineering school. Since then, they're trying to be everything - bought a med school, started a law school. Expanded, expanded, expanded. We had four dorms when I graduated, now they have 11. Not to mention the tuition is already 2.5x what mine was.

My kids would be lucky to get into the schools DH and I went to. Both of us got really good deals on college and grad school. My undergrad was ranked best ROI in the country for the year I graduated. DH's have paid off well with cost to benefit too.

Wtf on the last comment. Ok then.
I hate everyone again.
Seriously. WTF? I guess US News and World Report Best Colleges rankings falls in this category, too b/c they've ranked Ohio State ahead of Miami. And why would any of it be a slight? I don't get this at all.

Lol I was just pot stirring. It was TIC sarcasm at the outrage. OSU is ranked higher by far on the lists. But really who cares? They are both good schools.

No. Again, it's the name of the school.
Sure. But many (most?) schools with similar names are also "the" university of where ever, but no one says it. People don't say they went to "THE University of Georgia" or "THE University of North Carolina." I mean, they might occasionally, but not in the same way as former OSU football players now playing for the NFL do :-)

If our football team said "university of Notre dame du lac" people would laugh.
For a school who should be on cloud nine right now, people sure are touchy.

This is what everyone must call Notre Dame now since it is on our seal!
Come one. You all are dense if you think that people saying THE Ohio State University (with extreme emphasis) isn't about making a point. If people just said The Ohio State University, with no emphasis, then sure I get it. BUT COME ON!
Why do I care about this? Lol. Its just hilarious to me how up in arms both sides are about this. Admit the silly things your school does. We all have them!
Not really. We went to undergrad schools in tired old second-rate cities. I'd rather she go somewhere more colorful and less drab. But whatever, I don't really care.
When I was in grad school, I was jealous of the undergrads there.

i took dd for her 1st visit to my alma mater over Christmas i'd be thrilled if she wanted to go to school there but the choice is up to her where she wants to go. my mom was forced to go to the same school that her mom went to .. she hated it. she vowed to NOT make her kids suffer the same fate. i agree w/ her - dd gets to pick her own school.

I did not know U of Miami was private until this thread.
Unless you are in Ohio if you say Miami, most people are probably going to assume the school in Florida. Saying Miami U probably does not really help clarify for most people. So if you want people to know you are referring to school in Ohio, Miami of Ohio is the best way to do it.
I have heard people say Florida when they really mean Florida State or Michigan when they mean Michigan State. Expecting people to know which institution you mean by the placement of the U is asking a lot.
As for referring to OSU as The OSU, that just makes you sound like a pretentious ahole.
As for the original question....I would be fine with my kids going to my undergrad. Not sure if DHs undergrad would be right for DD, unsure about DS. I would be okay with either of them going to grad school where I went. Not sure how I feel about them going there for undergrad.
