I went to Purdue. It would be an out of state option as it was for me. If my girls were interested in engineering, I suppose we'd support it, however, I'm always going to encourage the in state option.
If they wanted to go to a $$$ private school, then they better have their sights set on an $$$ career. That, or they would need a pretty spectacular scholarship.
H and I have really kicked up the 529 contributions (they are 1 and 4) so hopefully they will feel like they have enough money for several options.
This is what everyone must call Notre Dame now since it is on our seal!
Come one. You all are dense if you think that people saying THE Ohio State University (with extreme emphasis) isn't about making a point. If people just said The Ohio State University, with no emphasis, then sure I get it. BUT COME ON!
Why do I care about this? Lol. Its just hilarious to me how up in arms both sides are about this. Admit the silly things your school does. We all have them!
I don't know about you, but this is what I call Notre Dame.
I think the THE is just school pride. Like, "We're the greatest! We're better than all the other Ohio schools! We're THE Ohio State University! Rah rah rah!" It's all in good fun. Pretentious is a weird way of putting it. I can't imagine anything about college football fandom being described as pretentious.
FTR, I did not attend OSU, but DH did for law school (and has no school pride whatsoever), and I don't follow football. I go to Trader Joe's during OSU games because it's dead.
And now for my favorite OSU joke (that can be used for any school): How to you get an OSU grad off your porch?
It totally depends on who my kid ends up being…I went to the largest (and best ranked) school in the country. DH went to a much smaller rural school…they both offer different things. My classes were fairly large, it was a good school for someone pursuing further degrees. DHs school had small classes, the campus was as big as some of our high school campuses.
Honestly, I feel like in Canada, while we do have rankings for schools, they are all really strong schools, each one has something special (in terms of programming, location, w/e)…so it would totally depend on what kind of setting my kid would want and what they want to study. DH thinks I am like over-the-moon-in-love with my school - I am, for me. It wouldn't be the right place for everyone.
Also, my kid might go to college instead of university, or an apprenticeship program for a trade…University isn't an 'absolute must happen' in my books, I don't think it is the right pathway for everyone.
H would love for them to go to his alma mater. I really couldn't care less. My school is good, his school is good, there are plenty of other great schools out there too. I am not in any way loyal to my alma mater.
Like I said in the other thread, though, I would like for them to go away to school. After H retires from the Air Force we plan to live in the city where we went to school, which will be a year or two before DS1 leaves for college. So I'd probably prefer he didn't go to one of our schools so that he can have the experience of being away from us.

I wouldn't tell him he couldn't, but I wouldn't encourage it. It was overpriced, move-ins every year were a nightmare, and I prefer to set foot in New York City as little as humanly possible.
Sure, it's a great public university (UC San Diego)
I'd prefer they went somewhere like CAL or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo though (cheap, engineering...).
DH and I also went to UC San Diego. We were both California residents so it didn't cost too terribly much for us. Only time will tell if A will have residency but if he really wants to go there then I would encourage it. DH and I might try to "influence" how he ranks the colleges. I also generally tend to feel that with undergrad success is less related to where you go (provided they have your major) and more related to how much effort you put into it.
I just looked up the school, and their website is www.miamioh.edu. It includes Ohio in the website!
Anecdote alert! I once did an internship in DC with a girl who went to UC Davis. Whenever people would ask her where she went to school, her answer was always, "Davis." Which earned her blank stares. But for the whole summer she never changed her answer to "UC Davis," which would have helped clarify things. So she continued to get blank stares are all these people in DC tried to rack their brains for a college called "Davis."
I get that Miaminis different since the name of your school doesn't include Ohio, but surely you can understand people being confused?
My sister in law went to Davis. That's just what they call it there and in California I would say most people understand. Nothing is worse in my mind than the attitude jerks at Berkeley who call their school "Cal" like it's the only one. Where I went, UC San Diego, the marketing department went out of their way to promote UC San Diego over UCSD because they wanted there to be no room for confusion.

Please blow my mind and tell me what year you graduated. I'm 1999...
A bit after you. Sorry. I was class of 2007. DH was too because he double majored even though he started before me.
Edit: I need to know. Do you say Fifth College or ERC? I've always been curious where the divide is.

We called it Snoopy Camp =) Ok but really, we called it Eleanor Roosevelt. NEVER called it 5th, I have no idea when that got coined.
It was fifth before it was named Eleanor Roosevelt but I don't know what year it was named. Sixth college still doesn't have a name. Looks like they're taking their good old time.

I'm also a Boilermaker alum! And it's a great school for science/engineering!
