Slightly bitchy, but I kind of smirk at all the panic of heavy snowfall in other parts of the country. Y'all shut shit down, for us, it's Tuesday.
Though, I am aware that the snow removal system pretty much anywhere outside of MN is archaic if existent. So, then my sympathy kicks in.
I'm ready to scream because school is closed today and there's less than half an inch on the ground. We totally should have eked out at least half a day! The Superintendent's reasoning was that half a day was worse than no school for working parents. Huh? Missing work is missing work and for those with flexible hours at least getting a half day in is better than no work at all!
We're going to be in the sixties all week, Florida winter.
Why you gotta rub it in?! Every time the weather gets particularly bad MH likes to remind me we could be living in Florida now since we seriously considered it a few years ago. I remind him that means my mother would be living with us and then he shuts up.
We always joke about Milwaukee, Carl's company has his same position open there.
Can I be obnoxious and ask a dumb question? WTF are you supposed to do if your furnace goes out somewhere you actually need it? Does everyone just have backup heat of some kind?
Ours went out on Friday and the house hasn't dipped under 62, but it occurred to me I would have no idea what to do if our pipes could freeze.

Space heaters. One of the posters on the boston board had her furnace go out a few weeks ago. It sucked. I think she said her hosue was down into the 40s.
But yeah no, there is no backup heat other than fireplaces, some poeple have wood stoves/pellet stoves, and space heaters if the electric is still working.

New England knows how to handle itself in the snow, but 3' is still a lot to move at once even when you have adequate equipment (which, believe it or not, we do).

Most people have no backup system at all. If our furnace goes out (which would also happen if the power is out since the starter is electric) we're cold and hope to have no pipes burst. After Sandy even with a wood burning fireplace to save us our house was in the low 50. Our current house has no fireplace or anything. And even our hot water depends on the furnace, so if that goes we're just cold.
Add me to the Denver spring is here club, I am SO HAPPY TODAY!!!!! Until two days from now when I'm sure we'll get a blizzard and I will return to my winter depression.

Space heaters are good, but you need to spend the extra $ and you have to get the oil heaters that you can set to a certain degree and it turns off when the room reaches that temp and back on when it lowers down too much. We're screwed if the heat goes out though.

Exactly. Not to mention they are saying it will be a blizzard with the high winds, which is likely to lead to power outages.

Don't say that! I just washed my car after looking at the extended forecast!
Yeah, my brother's furnace went out in Pittsburgh when I lived with him. We spent a lot of time on the couch covered in a pile of blankets with a space heater pointed at us. You just get cold and hope for the best with your pipes. If it really comes down to it and you're lucky you turn off the water and drain the pipes and then GTFO and stay with a friend or family or something.
I'm not sure how I'm feeling right now. We got downgraded from over a foot to 4-8". Boo. But we also live in an older neighborhood with only street parking, so realistically over a foot of snow would have sent our street into parking wars. So I guess I should feel glad we're not getting as much?
We did the most important prep already - we put the car in a garage. You NEVER want to have to deal with shoveling out your car in NYC after those city plows have buried it under 6 feet of snow which has hardened into a mess of ice and garbage. Totally worth paying a few days of garage fees.
OMG, you are bringing back horrible memories of DHs grad student days when we lived in the city! He lost his wedding ring clearing the snow off our car the first winter there. I remember strapping my two kids in the backseat and shoveling out the mound of snow and it taking forever because it was hardened into ice. Pretty sure that was the day we decided we weren't cut out for city living.

Hey, it's a marvel that we manage to survive here with our archaic snow removal equipment. We do have to shovel the interstates by hand, after all.

I think we have 4ish inches from overnight snowfall and it's been non-stop all morning - forcasts are saying 1 - 3 more inches today.
Is it terrible that I'm a bit jealous of the crazy storm the northeast is getting? If it's going to snow, I'd rather have a crazy blizzard where everything is shut down rather than just enough to make commutes tricky and roads slushy.
I talked to my sister yesterday - she's a trauma nurse in CT and she's prepping to be at the hospital for 72+ hours.
We're supposed to get anywhere from 6 inches to 2 feet.
Lol, I've seen the same predictions.
I drove my husband to work today. We got home at 11:30 last night and damn if I was going to go grocery shopping. So I just got back from Wegmans, I'm going to pick him up from work around 12, and hopefully grab "free" Chipotle and hope the line won't be that long so we can get home around 1 and work from home the rest of the day.
Because dammit, I've been looking forward to free Chipotle day for weeks.

I can see it being way more of a PITA to drop everything you're doing and either pick up your kid or try to scramble to get a neighbor or family member to be home (assuming they have a key) when your kids get home. And then the school has to worry about whether all of the parents have been informed and whether or not someone is ACTUALLY at home when they drop the kids off. If school is just canceled, it's out of their hands, and parents have more time, usually, to line up all-day care and adjust their drop-off routine before work if needed. Plus, not everyone can leave in the middle of the shift as easily as they can call out or get it covered.
School is open around here and that seems... not a great idea, since it's supposed to start getting heavy around 1pm. About 12 years ago, in Buffalo, it didn't start snowing until around 1pm and about 2000 students were trapped when the snow started falling at the rate of 1.5 inches per hour, and had to spend the night at places like city hall when the buses couldn't complete their routes.

I just did too! The forecast looks good but Denver just can't be trusted.

That's a fair point. Right now I'm looking outside and the sidewalks aren't yet covered and it's barely flurrying (our half days end at 11, so most kids would be home by now), so I do think it was a waste of a snow day

Free chipotle? Please explain.
If you order any item with Sofritas today, you can bring in your receipt for a free item that can be redeemed between tomorrow and I think the end of February. So they are basically getting people to try the sofritos for free.

Ha, I was thinking that...MN, think they know evvvvverything (says this upstate NYer who comes from a place with 10' average snowfall.. Note feet, not inches and can clear out in a day or less). Now that I live in MD, I sometimes seep into their worry over 3-6" because we lack snow removal equipment.
