My daughter is 7 and her two besties in the neighborhood are 9. They def still get AG stuff for Christmas/birthdays and still play with them occasionally. The 9 year-olds are both in 3rd grade.
Hmm. I guess I am the weirdo then. LOL.
To be fair, I think it is more a personality thing, and the parents who are willing to indulge in it. I myself am not a girly girl and I am married to someone whose job is to manage money, so AG is really off the table as far as things we are going to buy our kids. She has one doll, a few super-clearance things, and the rest is hand me downs or faux AG stuff from Target or discount stores. It's a miracle she even has the doll, and she'll get up to NY for a tea when pigs fly. She's really not into it at all. Thank God.

I'm 36, so they came out when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. But no, I didn't have one. I had no idea what they were until one of my friends (an only child who always had the expensive toys the rest of us wanted) got one in 4th grade, and she was ALL about it. But just didn't get it. My friends and I were like "yeah, you have Kirsten, but we have ALL THESE BARBIES. Moving on."
My niece is nine and still loving American Girl, and I'm like...
Or, of course, this could just be my niece.
She is only in third grade. I was in fifth grade when I was nine.
I guess there's that.
Hahaha! We (and by we, I mean dd) have a least one AG doll with us at all times.....which, of course, either dh or I end up schlepping around (holding it like a real child) and ultimately getting odd looks from strangers in whichever store we are in, because my dd has inevitably run off and left us looking like a weirdos who play with dolls. (That was a mouthful). It's especially funny when people ask dh what his doll's name is.
I don't know if they still sell this, but my mom bought the patterns to make the clothes from AG when I was a kid and my grandma made me a ton of clothes for the dolls. My mom also made us the matching PJs for the doll/us one Christmas.
littleduck I wanted Felicity, but her stuff was way too expensive. I grew up in VA and went to plantations and stuff for field trips, so I loved her story line.
I'm 34. I got Molly when I was 10. I was over her by the time I was 11. The whole period of looking at the catalog and all the stuff and picking her out * I begged for Samantha, but my Mom wanted Molly so that's what I got* was so awesome though, It felt like I dreamed of getting an AG doll for years. In reality it was probally 6-8 months. LOL!

I'm 28. I had (well, have, they're hanging out in boxes for DD one day), Josephina, Felicity, and one that looks like me. I also have EVERYTHING that related to Felicity, including her horse, Penny, and like 6 different outfits and a bed and other random stuff. I have one additional outfit/scenario for Josephina and I think like a goat? Did she have a goat? And I have a riding ensemble and a dog sledding outfit (and dog and sled) for the one that looks like me. Yeah, maybe I was spoiled. A bit.
I first heard about them on the nest. but I'm canadian so that that for what it's worth (although my H's 25 year old cousin is Canadian and was a huge collector growing up)
I'm 37 and hadn't heard of AG until a few years ago. Thankfully my 6-year-old isn't into them. My IL got her a knock-off a couple of years ago, and once my gal realized I wasn't going to continue to help her with multiple outfit changes, she grew tired of it.
I almost got my 2-year-old one of the Bitty Babies (the newborn AG) for her birthday, but I didn't get a chance. Hopefully that can of worms will remain closed.

I am 29. I had Addy and my younger sister had Samantha. I recently asked my mom if she still had it and she does! My dad is going to dig it out for me. Lol
No. I was born in 1978 and I lived in Southern California. Cabbage Patch Kids was where it was at.
I would imagine in the Midwest and the East Coast they were bigger earlier. I didn't really hear about them at all until my cousin (10 years younger) got into them.
My niece is nine and still loving American Girl, and I'm like...
Or, of course, this could just be my niece.
She is only in third grade. I was in fifth grade when I was nine.
I guess there's that.
I think girls are actually playing with them for a shorter period of time now.
9 is young!
My 9 yo loved her AG stuff but she doesn't play with it. It's more of a collectable thing for her- she dresses it up and does its hair but that's it. She never ever played with barbies either so I think it's 's just a personality thing.

Yes, and I'm 36. I have Samantha, in her original box. My grandma's sister is an amazing seamstress and bought the patterns to make all the clothes. I've kept it all and love it.
I am 34 and had Samantha. Still do, actually; my daughters play with her now. They also each have one of their own.
My younger sister has Kirsten, and my youngest sister has Felicity. I remember none of us wanted Molly, so little sis was glad they introduced Felicity by the time she was ready for a doll of her own.
