I got a fake Cabbage Patch Kid when they first came out. I still remember the shame. SHE DIDN'T HAVE TOES!!!
Mine looked like a flat, wide pillow-baby with limbs and a giant tangle of yarn hair.
And then all of my friends had the real thing, and I wanted to crawl under a rock.
My was from the Asian Market at the 69th St. Terminal (for Philly people). I remember the day I got her. I was the youngest in my 'hood and constantly tormented. The older girls saw her in my arms and came running over all "IS THAT A CABBAGE PATCH!!??!!", snatched her from my arms, inspected her, declared her "FAKE!" and sauntered away. #scarredforlife
I did really, really want a Cabbage Patch doll that first Christmas when they were so big. My mom made me one instead. Not the same.
I also got a homemade cabbage patch instead of the real thing. Sad face.
I have only heard of American Girl in the last few years. It is safe to say that we did not run in a circle of people who bought their kids AG dolls, but I wasn't a big doll kid anyway.
I had the Samantha books, and I used to PORE over the magazine, but my parents thought the prices were outrageous (can't really disagree) so I never had a doll.
I did have Cabbage Patch dolls though. I remember taking one with me on a trip to India in 1985 and all my younger cousins being all WTF about her and the CP phenomenon. lol

ETA: I'm 29.
My sister and I salivated over the cataloges (we read the books before getting the dolls). When we finally got them for Christmas, we had to pay half. They were 80 dollars at the time. I have no idea what they cost now.
No, I never had one. Never even heard of them until I had my own daughter. According to the date you gave, they came out when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade.
I'm 28 and had 2. Josephina and one of the look-a-like ones. I still have them, though they freak my H out. So they are in one of our closets right now. lol
I grew up on books from the library and science experiments. I had two barbie like dolls who mostly sat and watched the experiments or were my lab assistants. This means I'm going to spend a fortune on AG dolls for my kid, right?
My neighbours showed me their ginoromous AG collection. Houses and closets and animals and matching clothes and you can even go to the mall and get the DOLL's hair done? Who thinks of this , omg! We are too poor for this.
I'm 28, and I had Kirsten. I loved her but mainly because my two best friends had Samantha and Molly, so I wanted to be cool like them. It took years of begging my parents. I still have her, she sits on a shelf in my DD's playroom.
One reason for girls playing with their dolls at 9+: Youtube! They can make movies with doll actors. So they obviously need multiple dolls. If you want to go down the rabbit hole: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrGPMIVvwrs
I didn't have one. My cousins did, though! So jealous.
... I did buy the Marie Grace doll when she went on sale for $60! I needed a model so I could make clothes for my friends' kids' dolls. No other reason.
I didn't have one since I was 13 when they came out but I would have wanted one. Okay, let's be honest, I want one now.
As far as how long I played with dolls - I was 13, but like papie, it was serious, "adult" playing - naked sexy times and all. I had about 12 Barbies and only two Kens so yeah... My friends and I liked to act out soap opera scenes.
I had never heard of them until we randomly started their catalog in high school (I am 34). I was into history even then so I thought they were cool (for dolls, lol) but acknowledged it was a good thing I was too old for them because they were so expensive.
yes, even older, i have a few weeks on ya! sidenote, wasn't your H super anti-AG dolls at one point? how did you finally break him?!
HAHA! Yeah, I am younger *tosses hair* He IS still anti-AG, but I told him if we didn't get one for her my mother would. He was not about to let that happen.
I had never heard of American Girl until about two years ago. DD isn't into dolls, but if she was, I can't fathom paying that much for one.
When I was a little girl, I had Cabbage Patch dolls. I think they were $30 or $40 which seemed a lot at that time. My real ones were gifts, and my dad surprised me with some fake ones. I liked them all the same.
No. I am 35. Can I tell you how cool the guitar they have for them is? Dd got one for Christmas because she's been taking lessons. It's nicer than her real guitar. And was "only" $34. I would have loved the shit out of the accessories as a kid!
Had a Cabbage Patch doll amazingly. We were poor, but my father's sister found some in CA and shipped them to NY so my brother and I both got them for Christmas in 1983. Looking back, I gotta give my Mom a lot of credit that she realized what a big it was to us.
I wanted one more than anything in the world. When I was little, I was a tomboy and my parents assumed I would never want a doll. But then I got super into the Molly books and all day long I dreamed about a Molly doll. *sigh*
