When I was a little girl, I had Cabbage Patch dolls. I think they were $30 or $40 which seemed a lot at that time. My real ones were gifts, and my dad surprised me with some fake ones. I liked them all the same.
Are you shaming me for my fake Cabbage Patch Kid shame???
I eventually got a real one, and a preemie and a koosa. You don't hear too much about the koosas.

I received Samantha as a Christmas/birthday present when I was on 6th grade. So 12? That was in 1996. I remember the books first. I checked them out of the library every chance I got. Then I got magazines in the mail and I was sucked right in.
I was 13 when they came out, but I hadn't heard of them until I as 19, so no, I didn't own one. I actually first heard of them from Oprah on her favorite things show. She had them on when Addy first came out and I thought it was col so I started getting their catalogue.

I'm 37, never heard of them until I was an adult and a co-worker was talking about them for her kid. My BFF is my age, met in college, and she had one.

I was born in '81, and had Samantha, Kirsten, Molly, and Felicity. I had never heard of the dolls, and I got Samantha and her tea set w/ furniture for Christmas of 1988. I was really into historical fiction, so I loved reading the stories over and over again.
I still have my dolls, and will give them to Amelia once she's old enough to stop destroying everything she touches.
I was born in '81 and desperately wanted an AG doll but my mom refused and said they were too expensive. I was really into the books, which is kind of weird because it wasn't much before I got into Danielle Steel books. Several of my friends had at least one of the dolls.
I think the historical ones appeal more to older girls. My daughter has some of the GOTYs and a few historical ones but she mostly plays with the animals, the modern accessories and the non-historical dolls. I've actually put up most of the historical stuff she has because she's young and I figure she might be more into it when she's older.
My mind continues to be blown by this extended doll playing!
I haven't looked in to American Girl dolls since I was young, but like I mentioned I didn't even like dolls but I had Addy.
I think AG is a little bit different and recommended for a older age group since they are from a historical time period and there are books that go along with them.
I thought of AG as more of an educational enhancement and not dolly playing when I was younger
I am 30 (born in 1984) and got Samantha for my 7th birthday. My parents splurged for my birthday and then I got basically the full set of accessories and clothes for Christmas and birthdays until I was about 11 or so.
No but I got the magazine when it first came out which was pretty fun. I was too poor to get a doll but I would stare wistfully at them in the catalog.
I loved looking at that catalogue, but I was really getting too old for dolls by then. And they were a million dollars.
Eta- Except Barbies for whatever reason. I played with them longer.

I'm 27 and got Kirsten when I was 5 or 6. I also had Molly, Samantha, Felicity, and Joesphina because my mom was doll-obsessed and wanted me to have them. I didn't have the heart to tell her that 1. I was getting too old for dolls and 2. I never really liked them in the first place. Youngest of 4, only girl = spoiled by mom

I am 34 and I got Molly for Christmas the same year that my sister got Samantha (she is 36) and my cousin got Kirsten (she is 35).
We definitely got them in the 1980s because Felicity was NOT available when we got them. I distinctly remember when Felicity came out and I wanted her and my mother refused.
My mind continues to be blown by this extended doll playing!
My DD is almost 9 and in 3rd grade, her dolls days are very much on the decline. I really feel that if you wait until 8 to start AG you've missed the window of doll play. The books are about girls around 4th grade in age but written at about a 2nd/3rd grade reading level.
