I'm 35, and nope. I had never heard of them until I was a teenager and my younger cousin was obsessed. I didn't really like dolls though (was more into action figures like She-Ra, Legos, My Little Pony, and art stuff), so it makes sense.
Yep, I had Molly. I was born in 1986 and got her in the early nineties from my grandma. Still have her! My baby actually wore her glasses for Halloween as an old lady, lol.

Lurker here. I am 35 and never had one - my parents were pretty much appalled at the price - but I always wanted Samantha. If we ever have a daughter, she will surely get an AG doll at some point.
My aunt somehow tracked us down Cabbage Patch dolls when they were new. I got one for my 6th birthday and was obsessed, and my mom really emphasized how they were so expensive and we were very lucky. Meanwhile, my cousin (not related to the purchasing aunt) was not allowed to play with hers - they had to stay in the box to retain their value. I think that is so awful for a little kid! "Here's your present, but don't touch." And then when I was about 13, I visited her & her mom who lived near the Cabbage Patch factory and we went and saw them being "born" out of the cabbage. Obviously a life-changing experience.
They weren't around because I'm old. They were around when my kids were little but I was a poor. They're still around for the grands so yeah, they each have one (look-alikes for Christmas) and there is a store near us that they like to go to look at all the pretty expensive stuff.
Funny story time: DH was at an event when he was introduced to a VP of American Girl Dolls. He was kind of non-plussed, and was basically "wtf, how do you make a living selling dolls? That will never fly." This was about three years ago so no, it was not a small company. He was shocked when the store opened near us. I believe his response was "Holy Fuck! $130 for a freaking doll? And then there are clothes and accessories and...stuff! We're going to go broke, aren't we? I can't believe I didn't know about this crap!"
And this from a guy who had every GI Joe ever made. You'd think he'd understand the Girl version of "must have it all."
My girlfriends and I were really into American Girl. Maybe because we're in Chicago and closer to WI where they started? A girl in my class was on the cover of the catalog one Christmas and it was the biggest deal ever.
I remember reading the books in kindergarten and got my first doll when I was 7. I subscribed to the magazine too.
I think we played with them until 5th-6th grade, but the types of play evolved more into collecting.
I can't wait to buy DD a Bitty Baby, even though my mom keeps telling me what a waste of money it is.
I'm 28 - had Kristen. I was 3rd grade-ish when I got her? I think...
Anyway, I used to play with her until I was brushing her hair and her head fell off. I quick "repaired" her (put it back in, there was a string to tighten her head on with). Her head was still a little wobbly, so I never really "played" with her again because I didn't want my mom to know.

I'm 30 and I had Samantha and Molly. My family didn't have a lot of money so looking back I'm surprised. I actually still have them and I'm excited to get them restored/cleaned to give to my girls.
