littlemisssunshine, come back to this post. I really want to know how he justifies keeping guns in the house when he sleepwalks with them.
They went into the safe that night and have not been taken out since. Ammo is stored separately.
He wouldn't be able to get into the safe while asleep as it requires a key where only I know where it is, so I am comfortable with that arrangement. However having kids in the house changes that for me. Since we don't go to the shooting range or hunt, having guns seems pointless.
I was hoping for some concrete quotable facts, statistics or articles. People calling my H an idiot isn't helping me.
For real, the link I posted is a good illustration of how easily kids find and get into things you don't think they will. The campaign uses kids playing with sex toys, condoms, and feminine hygeine products in innocent ways to show how easy it is. I found it stark.

I linked two articles - one of which demonstrates that SLEEP SHOOTINGS HAPPEN.

So you have guns in your house that no one knows or has practice using?
This can't be real. It just can't be. Since it isn't real, if only you have the key to the safe get rid of the guns and don't tell him. #problemsolved
On the off chance this is real, you don't need facts or statistics you need to tell him that getting rid of the guns is not negotiable. If he still doesn't budge call an attorney.

They are in a locked safe that only you have a key to. You don't shoot them, you don't hunt, he hasn't even seen them since the sleep walking incident. Just get rid of them. Done.
Guns in the home increase risk: Rather than being used for self-defense, guns in the home are 22 times more likely to be involved in accidental shootings, homicides, or suicide attempts. For every one time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides.
Last line of article:
o The best way to avoid unintentional shootings, particularly those involving children,
By the way. In addition to the link I posted on page 2. I'm in support of getting rid of the guns without telling him. He doesn't have access how would he even know. If he brings it up "we do t have guns anymore, sweetie".
However, depending on how else he treats you I might also agree with the "do not have kids with him" side.

Just as a relevant story:
My dad's dad gave him an old 1800s (broken) heirloom rifle, and my dad liked how it felt (I think they were watching a lot of Walking Dead too) . He told my mom they should look into getting a rifle "for protection or something." They live in rural CT. Conversation went as follows:
Mom: Well, the only thing I'd need you to protect me from is bears. Dad: Oh I'd never shoot a bear! Both blink at each other.
Obviously they never bought the working gun, lol, and I don't think they even kept the heirloom.
So, great, he was horrified too. But as they are now locked up - his argument of wanting them for "protection" has gone out the window. if someone is breaking into your home, you're probably not going to have time to open the safe and (hopefully, because the ammo isn't WITH the gun...) load the gun. You think you'll have time for all that?
So, again, his "protection" argument holds no water. Therefore there is no need for those guns.

We both know how to use guns. H grew up around guns, used to go the range regularly, and we have both taken plenty of safety classes. However, we do not recreationally go to ranges or hunt.
I get that he *thinks* he's doing this to protect you. What he doesn't see is that in his attempts to protect you, HE COULD HAVE KILLED YOU! That's not even an accidental fire while cleaning the gun mistake that could be avoided with care and training. It was IN HIS SLEEP! If he was having a nightmare, he could have shot you, because in his dream you were someone else who had hurt his wife...or whatever.
We had the gun debate years ago. Final decision was to keep a bat in the bedroom closet. With an untrained shooter, a bat is much more likely to actually protect you than a gun. Robber sees a gun, he'll shoot you first. Robber sees a bat, he's more likely to run...if he stays a certain distance from you, he stays safe. So, the purpose is to PROTECT your family, not hurt whoever breaks into your house.

I think people are concerned as to why the gun wasn't in the safe in the first place.
Also, several of us have mentioned googling accidental shooting deaths. You will come across a lot of stories. In addition I beleive there is a wiki page that shows that the U.s. Has the most accidental shooting deaths in the world.

You can't control what you do when sleepwalking so I can't fault him for cocking a gun in his sleep. However, I do judge the hell out of him for keeping a LOADED GUN within arms reach, even putting him (and YOU) in that situation. How are you not flipping out about this?
How long ago did this happen? Is the gun still in the same spot? (Edit: I took forever to reply, so I see that you've answered this in a post already).
omfg OP. I know you aren't enjoying the pile-on, but that's just how shocking and dangerous that incident is. I don't think I would even be considering articles or convincing - there would be no guns in our house, ever ever ever again, after that. Or there would be no future children, because there would be no more marriage. That's how strongly I would feel about it after such an incident.
And really, if the guns are in a safe, to which only you have the combo, and the ammo is stored elsewhere, how likely is your DH to be able to arm himself in time to defend against an intruder? Especially if you're awoken from a sound sleep. Really really unlikely. Like so unlikely that it's pointless to have guns for that reason.

So why does he want the guns for "security" if you've already locked them in a safe that he doesn't even have access to? Tell him that you want a SECURITY SYSTEM for SECURITY.
This would be a non-negotiable for me. He could choose having guns or having a wife. I refuse to feel unsafe in my own home, and I sure as shit wouldn't bring a child into an environment where I felt unsafe.
You don't need stats, you need to tell him how you feel.
