Unless she's leaving the kid in the middle of the living room with a bowl of dog food and a gallon of milk while going away for the weekend, there's nothing judgeworthy here.
That has nothing to do with what someone else thinks or what they are obligated to do with their leave time.
You're right? I would still side eye someone who left their newborn for ten days.
Are you kidding me? You've got to be trying out some sort of jokes for your standup to be this stupid and judgmental. Really? You do realize that asking someone to watch their child, even at a young age, is not neglectful, right?

I didn't say it was neglectful. Who's stupid and judgmental?

Well you obviously have an issue with the mom spending 10 days away from her newborn.
For ten days? Come on, Tamb. If we're talking about a newborn--not a months-old baby--you can't tell me that would be in the baby's best interest. Especially when forming an attachment is so critical.

I think the consensus is still you. I guess there should be a poll for absolute clarity though...
I still don't understand. Why are you against something that is likely greatly benefitting the mother> Healthy, happy mom means a much healthier household for the child.

I thought the op's coworker was going on vacation while still enduring P.P. Bleeding. I thought hmm it is odd to want to vacation & not be able to enjoy thevacationsex.
honeychai. - let's get this non-bonding bitch! I think a fax to the police is in order. Include links to her Facebook page showing her fab vacation pics & a print out of the code section re:leave.
If the cops don't do anything hire elle. Elle will put a legal hurting on her.

I have a year off to bond with my baby. The government (aka tax dollars!) is paying me for it. Believe me, as soon as his grandparents are willing to take him and his brother overnight, I am shipping them off!
It never ends. My kid just spent two weeks at my Mom's, and people were all 'aren't you bored?' And 'what are you even doing with yourself?' And 'I would feel guilty'. Bitches, please. It was absolute bliss, every second of it.
Who the fuck gets bored without their kid, or can't figure out what do with themselves? Does not compute.
All I have to add is that I would kiss the person who make it possible for me to go on a vacation, sans kids, for ten days. TEN DAYS. It sounds glorious.

I did this on my mat leave! I'm in Ontario. It was fantastic. The twins were 9 months old then. I guess I shouldn't say anything, honeychai might report me to Ministry of Employment!
I bet the baby aged ten months by the time OP decided to come out with relevant details, lol. What in the world, honeychai?
Anyway. FMLA is also for taking care of family members. Not just for babies. So maybe your coworker is caring for her H because he is ill physically or mentally? This definitely is not something I would judge or even think about.

At 8-10 months I think my kid would have been just fine with this arrangement. Assuming we also left the dog to entertain her of course.
Ah yes. It's unnatural and WEIRD for a woman to want to leave her newborn. Of course.

Who died and made you protector of all babies 6 weeks and younger?
My now 3 year old and I are bonded quite nicely despite my husband and I leaving him (and his 17 month old sister and 3 1/2 year old brother) for four whole nights when he was 10 weeks old. You know what? Its almost like he doesn't even remember!

Uh, wut?? Lol. The monkeys had the choice of chicken wire with a bottle or chicken wire wrapped in cloth with a bottle. What does that have anything to do with bonding or attachment?? Lol. All it showed was that monkeys like a soft chicken coop. i highly doubt the grandmother the baby was left with is chicken wire with a bottle attached.
My mom left me to go to Florida with my dad when I was a teeny baby. A whole week. I never fully recovered, I mean I still pee myself sometimes, especially when I sneeze. I should mention it to my therapist.
Okay but FOR REAL none of you think it's sort of crappy (assuming an IDEAL NON PPPD SITUATION) to leave an under 6 week old baby for 10 days*?
Oh I would probably judge silently too if it was a newborn. But I wouldn't post here and be all "I can't believe she is using her leave for this, it is meant for bonding time!"
And also, what is the cutoff? I know lots of moms who left their 3 month old baby to go on vacation and I didn't judge them, I was busy seething in jealousy.
