Oh no! What a horrible feeling! One of my dogs was missing for days (my son left the gate open and I just didn't notice) and it was awful. I felt so helpless. I hope you find sweet Friendly soon!
Well I'm glad you recognize your part. You are a shitty dog owner. Don't get another.
Fuck you. What would have changed had I noticed at midnight? How would this be any different.
You are a shitty person, you should probably just not communicate.
If you had bothered to check on your responsibility you could have started looking before he had all night to wander/get picked up/get hit by a car whatever.
And Saint Monica, you can act like this would have been the same for you all you want, but you know that ML freaks out about someone knocking on their door. You really think someone is just going to leave the door open for the dog? Really? Right. And if you do leave your door open, you don't think you are going to make sure that your dog is inside? If you are so drunk that you can't remember to check on your dog, I'm going to think you have some kind of problem.
I also want to add that when I get drunk, I'm the person blindly crawling under furniture trying to make sure all my pets are in the house ... so... I don't understand why you would have ever left a door open for a grey hound.

Oh, I'm sorry, @stpete. I think I'm recalling the story of how you got him, and I want to hug you. And put up a poster in my neighborhood, but that wouldn't be much more help, I'm sure. Hope he's home soon.
You are going all the right things. Sending all the good thoughts I can that he is home safe and sound ASAP. I am sure he saw something and chased after it as sighthounds love to do, and got a little lost. I am sure you or some other kind person will find him soon.

Huh? Why is leaving the door open that different from having a dog door? When we moved in and hadn't installed a dog door yet, we would leave the door open if we knew we were going to be gone for a while. Our dog is used to being able to go in and out as she pleases. It wasn't a safety concern for her and we live in a safe neighborhood. Is it the smartest thing to do? No. But I don't think it's all that strange either.

Do you have any neighborhood garage sale sites you can post on? Ours is very active and I've seen pets found through it.
I hope you find him very soon. My dog escaped once and it was absolutely awful to worry so much. A neighbor took her dog out walking to look for him and brought him to me.
Wandering the streets drunk in the middle of the night sounds like an awesome idea.
But why on earth would you leave the back door open in the first place. ... For any dog/pet?!
The door between the house and the fenced yard? So the dog could enjoy the outdoors and yet also seek shelter and food if need be? Yeah, that's C-RAZY.

We're talking about a greyhound! A dog who loves to run and explore and meet interesting people! I don't care if it's an 'older' greyhound - this is not the sort of pet that I would let have the run of the yard.
And - seriously -- who leaves their back door open?
I am just so confused as to why you people think this is any different than having a dog door!?
I'm confused as to how you don't see the glaring differences!
I understand the difference from the perspective of someone breaking into the house. I do not understand the difference from the perspective of using it as a way for the dog to get in and out. Swimdeep seems to be implying that it is stupid to allow an animal to go from the house to the yard unsupervised.

Is it a magical fence that is impervious to intruders?
I feel bad for stpete and hope Friendly comes home soon, but let's not pretend this is not weird. Her home was wide open into the wee hours of the morning and she came home drunk. Anyone could have been waiting in her house at 1 am. This is a really bizarre thing to do.
I don't even have a dog and have little barometer for what's weird or not in dog care, but it didn't strike me as totally insane. And if it is odd or an unwise choice, I still think that the time and place for a vitriolic, caustic interrogation full of recrimination is ... not now.
My mom and niece were helping put up flyers, I went north they went south. Someone they stopped to talk to was walking home and saw him and called. i raced over and he was hanging out with a guard in a guard booth in front of some apartments. His collar is on but his tags are missing. I will get new ones right away, fix the fence and hopefully live happily ever after. Sammy is so thrilled.

I have a beagle. I assume you think I'm equally stupid for having an outlet for my scent hound to get into the backyard without my supervision? Good thing at 13 years old she's still hanging around.

How about now?
I have no desire to roast the flesh from anyone's bones with my imperious judgment today.

Absolutely YES - I would never, ever let a scent hound out without supervision - not even if I owned ACRES of land, and certainly not if I lived next to a road.
