I have seen fenced yards...and I have seen dogs say "YOU AIN'T SHIT" to those fences.
As a rule, you should not leave a working class dog alone in a yard. Ever.
I keep my dog in a baby sling all day long. When I sleep, I handcuff her to my ankle. I have seen rooms with windows and I don't like the way my dog looks at those windows...like, fuck you, you ain't shit. You can never be too careful. People who put large, solid structures around their yards and let their dogs see sunshine are asking for trouble. I hope none of you ever own so much as a goldfish. I can't BELIEVE they let you keep your children!!!!

Wait, what? Do you even enjoy life? With this line of thinking 1, the dog cannot be outside longer than their human is willing, and 2, the owner cannot become preoccupied with their children, gardening, grilling, etc and enjoy their time outside other to monitor the dog at all times, because otherwise what would be the difference to leaving the dog outside alone? Who wrote this rule book?! Apparently my beagle didn't come with one. But, he's a lowly blue collar, so perhaps only the white collar class comes complete with a manual.

Just don't leave your back door open all night.
Well, ok. But you just said they shouldn't be left outside alone at all.

My parents had a husky once. She was a beautiful pup they bought from a BYB. Instead of walking and running her like they should have, they put her out on a run (which is basically chaining a dog between two trees). She ran alright...she nearly hung herself while my parents were out running errands. Our neighbors rescued her.
So - NO I don't think any dog or pet of any kind should be left outside alone.

This is not even remotely the same situation. Can you not see that?

You don't see the difference here? Reall6?
Look, personally I am not a fan of leaving dogs alone outside unattended for long periods of time, because I have heard of dogs being stolen to use as bait dogs in fighting rings or being poisoned. But Friendly is OBVIOUSLY loved and very well cared for. And comparing his care to your parents keeping a husky in a dog run is laughable.

That's why I'm so kerflumpt about it! Who leaves their back door open?

Did your parents leave you outside when you were a kid?

As a matter of fact they did! I'm still pissed off they re-homed her.

I actually don't disagree that dogs should not be left outside unsupervised. There are so many things that can happen from accidents to crazy neighbors to broken fences, etc. However:
1. St. Pete gets that it was not smart to leave her door open all night.
2. You can share info about pet safety without sounding like a smug, condescending dick.
Exactly. If your intent is to persuade, you need to actually reach your audience. Implying they are dumb or don't care about their pet is not going to endear them to your point(s).

But wouldn't you agree that sending her somewhere else was better than the conditions at your parents' home?
I was so happy (and sad) when they found her a new home - with a family who already had a pack of huskies and acres and acres for them to run in. I loved that pup...no matter how many times she nipped me.

My intent was to interact on a message board... which I have successfully accomplished.
