I haven't read this book but does it give tips on how to clean the closet under the stairs which is occupied not by Harry Potter but by a million spiders
If the spiders don't bring you joy then they should go
My goal this weekend is to drop off the box of stuff in my car to goodwill. Its been in my car for 2 days so this is a lofty goal. And Im cleaning off the top of my guest room dresser. Baby steps.
Im also working on my digital photos which are a mess. My goal is to move everything onto my external harddrive under files for each year. I have 4 hard drives with photos and files all over the place. I also would lie to edit a couple more days of photos and get them ready to print. Last week I sent 2 small print orders off to test some new labs. So I need to also look at these and pick a lab.
Im not letting this die.
So last week I dropped off the stuff to good will. Took me until monday to do it. I never cleaned off my dresser but I emptied the contents of the dresser that had been beautifully konmarie folded. I just cant keep that dresser because its in DD's new big girl room so now I have an underbed storage box and a storage drawer thing in my closet for the contents.
So about the digital photos. I moved them all. They looked fab. Then I dropped my harddrive. Without backing it all up. So now I have spent the week restoring what I hope is most of the stuff and relinking them all in photoshop. I have 35,000 photos and am still missing 20,000. THey just arent seen by the computer and I have to manually relink them. I am hoping I can get the majority back. Also in the process I found a pic of DH's ex wife. I have been married to him and have never seen a picture of her. I saw it and then quickly moved to the next pic. I always feared she looked like me. She does not. THe other issue is she looks so young. I hate to compare myself but she was so young. Around it were pics where I was that young and I was also shocked I looked like that. Not that I look bad now. Im just older. So thats the deal with that. Note to everyone, back up your files. Before you move them all. I now spent $300 on new hard drives. And am buying a cloud backup system as well this weekend.
I also bought a desk to keep my laptop and harddrive on so that I dont have them on the end table where they can drop. THat cost me $150. Marie Kondo would be shaking her head in disapproval over how much konmarieing costs me.
So this weekends goals - 1. dont get flooded from the storm. 2. Put dresser on freecycle. 3. Finish finding photos. 4. Get boat out of water and put inner tubes that are sitting in the guest room in the boat.
I thought we were pretty well done with our house, we pulled everything out, made decisions, organized everything back into closets and drawers, then last night h suggested we do it again. I'm the type that would live in a white room with bar walls so I'm all for it, but it shocked me coming from him. I'll be interested to see how much progress we make with a second pass.
My friend once said that she'd love to decorate a bedroom like the one in Goodnight Moon. I said I would do the one in Harold and the Purple Crayon.

I am moving into my new house tonight (squeeeeeee) I am not taking 1/2 of our crap with us!!!!! We have owned our current home for just under 12 years, it will feel good to get a fresh start!
DH went through his clothes a bit today. In total, we have 3 garbage bags and 2 diaper boxes of clothes. This doesn't include the boxes of clothes I've given to a friend or any of DS's clothes. I haven't been able to bring myself to go through them yet. I don't want to goodwill something cute and tiny on a tidying high that I would have otherwise wanted to hold on to. I have been holding on to some of my favourite things from the kids.
So, I'm pretty much on paper which is impossible since DS doesn't want to nap for the past 2 weeks. Hitting up paper in 20 minute chunks of time is difficult. While doing paper I have run across old floppy disks. I know I must have held on to them because they have "important things" on them. I don't even have a computer that will read them and they probably have a million viruses, right? Encourage me to get rid of them!!!
I say junk the floppy disks. If there was something SO IMPORTANT on there wouldn't you have needed it by now and found a way to get the files off? Even if you did need a document in ghe future that you thought you once had would you remember which disk it was on?
Also, those things were notorious for just not working anymore. One tiny scratch and they were useless. What are the chances the files are even readable at this point?

I just started attempting to clean out all of the crap in my house. Putting together alot of stuff for Goodwill. Cleaning out my closet of all the things that no longer match the aesthetic I am going for - wrote out a very detailed post on S&B about it if you are bored.
Setup my ebay account to sell and finally listed some items. Crossing fingers that people actually purchase some things, otherwise what a huge waste of time.

How helpful is actually reading the book?
I'm sure I'm a walking cliche, but the book was life changing for me. It helped me look at things and why I kept them in a whole new way. H and I went through everything together and we cleared out a lot, but were still are letting go of more. I plan to do a more thorough second pass because my perspective on stuff has changed so much.

I agree. I only read the book to see what all the hype was about, and I was convinced it wasn't going to be anything special. It started off as almost a hate read for me, but I was a total convert by not very far in.

I just listed this on CL! I'm hoping it sells because these were some of DS's FAVORITE things and I feel sad just dumping them at Goodwill. I also gathered a small bag for the kidney foundation who are coming next week. I hope to have more before then, but I need to go out and do some errands now so I need to stop purging.

You are my voice of reason. Do you know the best way to dispose? I do think they likely have my old resumes on them. Any projects that had patient info should just have initials. Purge, purge, purge!!!!

we have a local business in town who recycles electronic stuff like that. It's a computer/electronics store, but they do the recycling on the side. can you call a few places or ask on a local Facebook page?
heygrey - I'll post on my local. DH said to just bend in half and throw out. There must be a better way for the environment.
Well, I was going to say you could take a hammer to them and toss them in the garbage, but I figured if that was your plan you probably wouldn't be asking how to get rid of them, you'd just do it
There are times I just toss things in the garbage, but I do try to find a recycling option first.
I'm so glad this thread is still going because I want to AW my front hall closet. The diapers/formula are being donated so they will be gone. And the overflowing bins on the left were purged by my H once he got home from work.

Looks awesome! I did the same thing with the cubby for shoes & it's worked well....only my coat closet is half that size!

I finally came up on the library wait list and read the book last week. I have been way more motivated and "getting it" after reading the book. She said a few things that really stuck with me and helped get over some purging uncertainty/guilt. For example, one is that the money has already been spent so hanging onto something just because it was expensive isn't a good reason. The money has already been spent so donating or getting rid of isn't going to change the fact.

This looks awesome. Any tips on boot storage that would work similarly.
pizzapizza Can't say I have any bright ideas on boot storage. I had one pair of tall boots and decided they were not bringing me any joy so I tossed them. Maybe a low shelf/rack to line them up on? Or I have seen boots stored upside down on long hooks/rods of sorts.
I'm counting down the days until I can remove that Vera Bradley bag and cooler from the front hall. Those are my pump bags. Will so be ready to stop schlepping that crap around and storing it.

I love when this thread pops back up
We dropped off another 4 trash bags of random crap for donation this weekend and this week is my local consignment sale so 2 big plastic tubs worth of kid stuff plus about 6 feet worth of hanging clothes are going out the door. Weeee! At least there will be some monetary return on that stuff (anything that doesn't sell will be donated so none of it returns here).
I've started moving into sentimental stuff a little bit, it's going easier than I expected it to. I still have a lot of craft supplies to get through but the room they're in has been taken over by the consignment stuff for the past month so I skipped ahead rather than make a larger mess.
I also re-did my bathroom/toiletries stuff this weekend and got rid of a fair amount of things I'd kept "just in case" the first round. I really, really struggle with the "joy" determination on practical items. This is also likely why my H and I agree our kitchen needs another round as well. We had kept all 12 place settings of utensils the first go-round and decided to try cutting that to 6 of each item (it's just us and a toddler who has his own toddler sized utensils). I kept the extras in a cabinet for now in case we decide we don't like having so few. Our dishwasher is awful so we stick to handwashing, might make few utensils more annoying. We'll see!
We have a big tote full of Christmas stuff plus our 6' artificial Christmas tree to get rid of still. I thought I'd found a charity over the summer that would accept trees starting in October but now I can't seem to recall who that was or find it again so I have some digging to do. Any suggestions to check? All the places that I know of that do Christmas gift charity programs don't seem to be in the business of collecting trees to go along with those gifts they distribute so IDK.
indifferentstars, check with thrift stores for the tree. A lot do sell them, they just don't accept them until October or else they'd be storing a million and one trees.
Ive been doing a second pass this weekend and it's amazing. My trunk is full for the thrift store and I have a pile of stuff currently listed for sale. My relationship to stuff changed so much with the first pass, but everyday I look at things differently and realize I don't actually love them.
We're also seriously considering building a small house this summer and we will get rid of most of our furniture and more stuff in that process. I love the planning and dreaming and "lightning up" as we move forward.
This weekend I cleaned out the unfinished part of our basement which is pretty much a catch all. I got rid of 50% of the stuff and organized everything that was left and it feels amazing! This week I plan on tackling the kitchen stuff. I have been aiming for one category a week which is going really well. I also plan on going through my house a second time to see what else I can get rid of.

Exciting! What's your ideal sq footage? My H is totally gungho about the tiny house thing but I'm not so sure. If it were just us, yeah maybe, but with a toddler/growing child as we move forward....ehh, I think small regular house (800ish sq ft maybe) is much more feasible than true tiny house. I like having relatively few belongings, but I also like empty space. Cramming everything we do own into a tiny space would lose that airy, open effect I'm enjoying now. For sure, we have no aspirations to ever own a large home but I'm not sure how small I could comfortably go.
I'll check thrift stores for the tree. Ideally I'd find somewhere that's going to GIVE it to someone though and not just resell it but obviously I understand an organization's reluctance to accept tons of large, space hogging tree donations.
indifferentstars, we're looking at 700-900 sq/ft. Not tiny, but small. We are currently in a 600 sq/ft apartment and its not too bad, but I'd like a better layout. And no shared walls!
When you look at thrift stores consider their cause. I'm not a huge fan of the chain stores (goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.), but I managed a thrift store for a local homeless shelter and all of the profit generated went back to the local community.
Only 1 more room left (The Office from hell)! Did DD3 & DD4s room today! Going to buy "Sweater weather" gray FLOR carpet tiles & new blinds but otherwise done decluttering it!! I even got rid of the last toy in there (outside of AG dolls) which was a huge Loving Family Dollhouse. They like it a lot--still has a dresser & bookcase (not pictured) & I'll rebunk (or get new bunk) the beds eventually. I can't believe how much progress I've made since reading about this! Life Changing
I konmaried O's underwear drawer!! (The socks aren't technically regulation)
I read this as "sweater drawer" and spent too much time examining the patterns wondering why the heck he had so many weird looking duplicate sweaters. Glad to see I was wrong
I struggle to keep my own underwear drawer properly KM folded (I need a smaller box lid to hold them up as mine is too large and they slid down and fall over) so I'll be impressed if O/you maintain this!
