Instead of hurting Trump, not showing up could end up helping him. The pundits talked about how he could hurt himself by showing up--debates aren't his forte. Not attending makes him less vulnerable and appeals to those who like his contrarian (racist and inflammatory) positions and statements.
I'd also heard this. He takes an idiotic "stand", looks uber-tough & hard-nosed, just like they like him. And bonus: he gets out of having to answer questions &/or argue actual points with men who are intellectually superior- of course he's gonna skip if he can!
You're deluding yourself if you think he can't win.
If Bernie Sanders gets the nomination, we will have a Republican for president.
How is this the case? Aren't all the idiotic white male Bernie supporters saying if he isn't nominated, they'll vote Republican?
I think the true Bernie Bros are a very small segment of the voting electorate. Many moderate dems are not enamored by Bernie and may not show up for him, or may vote for a wild card like Trump.
I had a conversation with a Trump supporter last night Her reasons for supporting him don't even make any sense and she doesn't think a woman should be president because other countries wouldn't respect a woman president :/
Does she mean all the other countries that have or had women leaders?
Please please please let this hurt his polling numbers
I was just thinking this morning that the topic on the talking head shows this weekend should be how much more substantive this debate was than the previous ones. Not that there wasn't still a lot of mudslinging and namecalling, but there was much more discussion of issues, I thought. Stances I completely disagree with almost 100% but it was almost refreshing to hear.
The worst part of business travel this year has been hearing about Trump NONSTOP on airport TVs all the damn time. If the media could maybe shut up about Trump for 5 minutes, he wouldn't be taken as seriously.
The media is making it worse. If Trump didn't get so much attention, he'd be over it by now.

What is concerning here is that the Republican candidates are laser focused on Hillary.
That is because they don't want her to win the nomination because they know she can win. Hillary, in reality, is a moderate and she will gain moderate votes, especially if Trump is the nominee. And for all of their bluster, the Bernie bros are mostly not going to vote for Trump. They will stay home, or they will vote for Hillary or a write-in candidate.
If Bernie gets the nomination, you will see that Republican focus turn and they will drag out anything and everything showing that Bernie is a socialist who will raise taxes on the middle class and the wealthy. The moderates will stay home or they will write in a candidate.
This article - although obviously an editorial - explains a lot of why, although I align more closely with Bernie politically, I'm going to vote for Hillary (whom I do like, so no nose-holding here) and hope like hell she wins.
I've given up on thinking he couldn't possibly be president and it's "all a big joke". His polling numbers are alarming. I would actually be surprised at this point if he DIDN'T take iowa and NH. I really think him being president could happen. It's terrifying.

Because moderate republicans like me will vote for Hillary over Trump, but will opt out or write in rather then vote for Bernie leaving trump supporters voting in large swaths with less moderate support for the Dem candidate.

I completely agree with this article. I was just reading a Vox article that spoke to the fact that Hillary's pragmatism isn't getting people excited - but her views are REALISTIC as to what can be achieved. I like Bernie just fine, but if he thinks he can transform the government, particularly with a Republican majority in the House and Senate, then he's deluded (seriously, good luck passing those massive tax hikes!). But, people like that. They want to feel hopeful about a candidate.

Riiiiight. Because Germany gets absolutely nothing done.

Everything I have heard this morning says that skipping the debate made him stronger. He held a fundraiser for war veterans instead (that Huckabee and Santorum showed up at too! WTF!) and raised like 6 million dollars.
Ugh. Why? I seriously do not get his appeal. I was hoping this would show conservatives what a whiny baby he can be about things not going his way.

I didn't watch it but I heard this on the radio too: with Trump gone the other candidates were actually able to talk for once.

It makes him look like a anti-establishment, don't care so what I think 'independent' to the type of people who are inclined to support him. Keep in mind the republicans tend to be anti-big government and he appears to be bucking the establishment. Which is why he is so dangerous and a serious concern.
I am having a really hard time believing that he raised $6mil in one day for Veterans.
RECEIPTS.
If the polling is accurate it would be total,y possible if those voting for him all made small donations ($10-20) which is believable. and depending on the cost for attending his event. 6 million isn't that huge an amount if spread out among a large number of people and 'donors'
To me, Cruz is the face of evil. Trump is the face of crazy. I'd be happy with Hillary or Bernie. I'm voting for the Democratic nominee no matter what. I hope most people leaning that way will do the same.
i wonder how much of that money the veterans organizations will actually see. all of the donations that were supposed to go "directly to vets" went to the trump foundation and will apparently be doled out to veterans groups later. trump won't say which ones, though. everything this guy does sucks....even when he tries to do somethign good.

The issue is that's not enough to win the general. Currently Trump has broader and more invigorated support which translates to electoral college votes. You can't win a national election with just your parties votes you have to get moderates. Bernie will be tagged as a socialist and that will tank him in the general with moderates leaving Trump with better get out the vote numbers and enough to win.
while I've said I hope it's a joke, that doesn't mean I'm taking this seriously and that I'm not going to vote. As We see all these right wing nuts coming out, I'm hoping that this will be matched by more and more dems getting out to vote too.
This is scary and I think everyone recognizes that.
I know everyone here is.
But the larger population isn't. And frankly it scares the shit out of me.
I feel like some people are dismissing/ignoring because of playground rules -- you ignore the bully. But this isn't the playground, and the stakes are terrifying.
This whole election is terrifying, and even if Trump and Cruz lose and we never hear from them again (yeah, right), they've had an enormous impact on this country and set us back so much, both with how things are here and how we're viewed to the rest of the world. I'm a lurker, but even what's happened on this board the past few days makes me think about their impact. I truly believe that the bar for what most white Americans consider racist or inappropriate has been lowered since this election season started (and since things with police have gotten worse/gotten more attention). It's easy for educated white people to look at the insanity going on in our country, the blatantly racist and discriminatory things that are coming out of the mouths of our PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES and think that if they're setting the bar for racism or microaggressions or whatever else, there's no way that we fall into the same category. I have lost so much respect for people IRL who like and defend Trump (my aunt told me that even though he basically called Mexicans rapists, he didn't really mean it), and I know so many others who feel disappointment and anger at what they're hearing. It's creating such a divide. WOC on this board are even thinking of leaving because they're tired of it all. If this can't be a safe place - a place full of what I consider to be intelligent, empathetic women - then where the hell can be? I don't think that all of this can be blamed on what's happening in politics by any means, but I think that Trump & Co. found the cracks that were already there and then put some C-4 in them. If I were Hillary I don't even know that I would want the job anymore. How the heck do you begin to try to heal a country after this mess?

A-Trump is not Punking us. Ashton is not going to jump out on election day all "I'm back, bitches!" And if he was, he is still a giant flaming asshole. His rhetoric has already incited actual violence. His running has already damaged how America is viewed world wide. NOTHING about this is funny.
B-To think Trump CAN'T win is dangerous. We HAVE to get out there and vote. HAVE TO. And if people laugh off Trump, they won't take this election seriously.
C-BernieBros are 20 something white liberal males. They were never really going to vote. MANY presidential candidates have attempted to inspire young voters to GET OUT AND VOTE! And it rarely works out. over 50% of voters are over the age of 45. So BernieBros sitting at home pouting really doesn't matter except making my voting experience more enjoyable by not having to listen to their bullshit while in line.
I don't really think that Sanders will get the nomination, at least that's what I keep telling myself.
Let's pretend that Trump gets elected...what will really happen to this country?
Well there are a couple of ways to look at this. Optimistically, as one man, he doesn't have control over EVERYTHING, and we all know that for better or worse, a candidate's promises (even the ones they WANT to stand behind) often fail to come to fruition.
More realistically, though, he will have to, to some degree, play party politics, and all of the associated BS that come with that platform. In terms of reputation and ability to have any kind of real diplomacy, I think the results could be truly shattering. And terrifyingly, as I think UWR pointed out, we are talking about a potential for THREE SCOTUS spots. That honestly scares me most of all, I think. We can abide some short-term crazy and even some recklessness; the system is built to withstand that. But when you cripple the checks and balances in a way that spans decades? It's hard to imagine the repercussions.
