I hear she's bringing her dad back. I think I liked her music most when he was in charge. Beyonce's lyrics have never been all the great but now they are terrible and anthemy plus they contain cursing so I can't even play it with the kids in the car.
Random- Tyrese's new album is pretty nice.
Not I, foundmylazybum lol. I think even Michelle is like, "Girl, whet?" I feel bad for being so hard on her, because I love her so, but she earned it with this. At least I can mute the video and enjoy that.
I remember when the last Justin Timberlake album came out and I was like "ew, what IS this garbage! Blech! Where is my beloved JT!? Who did this!?" I definitely can relate to all you are saying sfy
I think there is a difference between targeting young people and targeting actual teenagers. Let's hope Mathew pulls it together. Then he can pay his child support! Two birds, one stone, am I right?
I don't know that I can take Tyrese seriously enough to like his music, though. God, that is a dumb child.

Lol. He is dumb, but I love him so much for some reason. I really appreciate that he sticks to making r&b music and isn't trying to reinvent himself. Just like Jaheim. I know exactly what his next cd will sound like before he even makes it
My husband likes Jaheim. I like mocking him for liking Jaheim. We've been so like-minded throughout this thread, though, so I'll just go sit down somewhere .
I'm also kind of confused as to why this is necessarily a youth anthem. To me, she doesn't seem to be pandering to the teens with this--it's more like an unapologetic proclamation of who she is, what she stands for, and what's she's accomplished.
And her daughter is adorbs, in the parlance of the young people.
Stylistically I can buy the argument that it's targeting the youth (youths!) but I do think the message is more of an anthem for women who have been legal adults for over a decade rather than those just striking out. Although it also seems like it can serve as an aspirational anthem for the younger set too.
@dontcallmeshirley1, it's not a youth anthem, it's that the repetitious rap/singing is what the youth are really in to. Future, amigos, Yo Gotti, Rae Sremmurd, it's what the kids like. I'm thinking she can pull them in with the repetitious rap.
sfy, @tooshort, HSers aren't really into Beyoncé. They like the new girls-Tinashe, Sevyn Streeter. Of course, Nicki Minaj.
Beyoncé was huge my first year teaching HS (2006-2007). These kids don't even know about the Nas/Jay-Z beef/comparison.
Hence the reason why I think she's playing herself. And me at the same damn time! Give me something I can support, Yonce!
Those 2006 seniors will be 30 soon . That should be the target! Her Day 1s.
IF Beyonce is targeting younger people -- I'm not sure I agree with that -- it's because that's who is on social media posting memes and keeping conversation going about her. Think about it, half of the people here are still saying "how do I use twitter?" when the kids have moved on to Snapchat and so on. The way you grow a business is by attracting new customers.
But for the most part, young people buy singles, that is, when they pay for music. Grown folks buy albums. Beyonce is not a singles artists. Money for her has been in touring and albums. I mean, I guess the argument is that if she makes these singles, the kids will buy it, but @barefootbarista has rebuffed that theory--those kids aren't really thinking about her like that. I don't know what she is actually doing, to be clear, but to me, her last few songs have had a clear change in direction.

present.
when I was 9, I got a karaoke machine for xmas and learned every word to say my name. the love affair has never ended, and I can't say a bad thing about her. I made my husband sit down and watch this video with me.

Plus, one's career should always evolve, especially in music. No one* wants to hear an artist rehash the same old shit. But Bey's music hasn't sounded the same in quite a long time. Every album is different. It's not targeting a younger audience. It's keeping current with the sound. Bey wants radio play and she's not going to get by recording different versions of Love on Top which imo, wasn't Bey as much as a throwback to a time in music for black women, not a representative sound for Beyonce.
I found it empowering. Is it okay that I felt that way? I'm not a black woman but I am a woman and any representation of a woman owning it makes my heart sing. I hope she sings this today at the super bowl.

We're watching the superbowl with friends (well, I am mostly eating, watching the commercials and on my phone). My husband said she wouldn't sing it tonight, because it was too much. I said of course she would because otherwise, there was no point to releasing it yesterday. We made a bet. Loser to cook all week. I will concede that everyone here is 30+ and half of the women were up dancing. I was, too, but I think it was largely due to the sheer joy of my sweet victory .
Right, winnieandwine? She and her team are smart as hell!

brilliant. no wrong, I tell you.
enjoy your week off! it's just the three of us tonight - winnie and I were up dancing, and she's 39 in dog years.
I'll never not be able to associate Beyoncé with when she lip synced at the presidential inauguration and then when someone from the band told that she did, Beyoncé got her fired.
But then her songs are totally forgettable to me and I am clearly not her target audience.
Cause I'm not even a Beyonce fan (I admire her work ethic) and right off the top of my head I can think of several songs that were spoofed, talked about incessantly etc. Like, Single Ladies. Drunk in Love. Irreplaceable. Crazy in Love. I mean, shit people STILL say put a ring on it and to the left.
Also, folks shouldn't sign NDA and then run off at the mouth. You lose jobs like that.
Right. I'm not a Beyoncé fan either, but let's give credit where credit is due.
I actually know the person who got fired and there was no NDA. She didn't work for Beyoncé and wasn't under any sort of legal obligation to keep the lip syncing a secret.
I do know a few of her songs because they have appeared in spoofs and were played on the radio 87 times an hour and such but if I had heard them just once, I wouldn't have remembered them.
But any song played once is likely going to be forgotten. If you don't like her and her business practices because your friend got fired, that's fine. But don't try to act like her music is forgettable when it and Beyonce are part of the pop culture lexicon -- Independent women anybody? -- and has been now for more than 15 years.
I said they're forgettable to me. I think they all sound the same and basically sound like any other pop song. Obviously lots of people feel differently. I'm not saying she isn't a big pop culture figure, just that I don't personally find her music particularly interesting or remarkable.

Bey's songs all sound the same?
What kind of ish is this???
I don't even like Bey.
You know what I hate about this board? You bitches always have me over here stanning for people I don't even like. I don't like Hillary. I don't like Bey. I don't like all kinds of shit and yet here I am because people say dumb shit.
If any of you heifers get me defending Taylor Swift, I'm going to personally come to all of your houses and burning them down.
That being said, I don't like Formation. It's not my jam. But I didn't like anything off Bey's last album. But I finally decided about 18 months ago that I actually do like Single Ladies. So I fully expect to cop to liking Partition in about 2 and a half years and then Formation about 3 years after that.
oh and I like two Bieber songs just to make this even more controversial. SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO AND LOVE YOURSELF.
If I never had to see her trademarked practiced kicked puppy look ever again I would be ONLY TOO GODDAMNED HAPPY.
I also need her to remove the phrase slutshamed from her mouth. Slutshaming is a hot button issue for me, trust. But no one slutshamed Swifty. People don't give a fuck who she bangs, only that she's got to sing about it in a way that makes her the innocent, wide eyed victim, the boy some Gastonesque villain who targeted her, and the girls/women he chooses instead/after her vain, self involved heifers who are too pretty to deserve a man.
