I will also own up to not being a Bey fan, but I think so many of her songs were spoofed because she's so over the top. Like she was PERFORMING that single ladies video, and I don't know another person that would've been able to take those dance moves seriously. I always feel like she's trying so hard, she's bouncing around too much, and she seems to take herself so seriously, it sort of makes it easier to poke fun at her because of it. I'm thinking of Single Ladies and serfbort Drunk In Love.
But my opinion hasn't taken a dime out of her pocket, she's going to shine and all that. You do you, girl. I would've rather watched Coldplay and Mark Ronson kill it for 45 minutes, so that should tell you where my loyalties lie.
Edit: OH MY GOD I realize how awful that sounds. My tastes are in "rock" for parents in their 30s. I am not cool. At all. Not "my loyalties are with older white men." Ugh, shut up, Lyss. Sorry everyone.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

You don't know anyone else who would have been able to take all those dance moves seriously?
Like you're saying that for real or because you've never seen a woman perform in the last idk, 20 years? Madonna has been working that hard and killing the shit out of some choreography for like ever. J.Lo kills it on the floor. Gaga lives it. I mean . . .

I'm going to bed.
Point taken! But Gaga also gets made fun of quite a bit for taking herself too seriously. As does Madonna. We love to make jokes about people when we feel like they don't have a sense of humor about themselves. Like, I remember Gaga said she could smell her fans or something. Probably 7 years ago. They still play that shit.

I do think Beyonce has been making a number of "throwaway" songs lately, which is basically the point of most of my posts in this thread. They do sound the same and for that reason, they're not memorable (7-11, Flawless and Formation all sound similar, tbh). Perhaps more importantly, I don't know that they will have staying power. In 20 years, will those songs be part of a respectable catalog that still gets played like Whitney or Mariah? I don't think so. But luckily for her, she does have some true classics that I think will stand the test of time. Whatever the case, I guess sales will ultimately determine her direction. The key is to evolve, not to regress and great artists can attract younger generations without alienating their core fanbase.

Choreographed by Fosse, performed by Gwen (and others - sorry other dancers, i don't know who you are specifically). But yes, Single Ladies was definitely an homage. A fantastic one I might add.
sfy do you think Bey won't have that staying power because her music is not songs in the r&b sense? Whitney & Mariah make music that all ages can sing and understand, did Beyoncé ever really do that? I think of surfboard etc and my mom wouldn't know what that means and I wouldn't play that in front of my daughter while most of Whitney and Mariah are fine no matter the audience.

I watched the video the first time without sound and thought it was more powerful without the record. She looked amazing and was really hot in the hallway scenes. I don't think she's anywhere close to reaching Madonna's awkward sexual devolution.

No, not at all. There are tons of musicians who have pop/rap songs that still get play and make me want to jump up and dance 20-30 years later. See also, 95% of MJ's catalog. The same is true for a ton of old school hip hop. I listen to those radio stations more than half the time and love it. So it doesn't need to be r&b to evoke that, nor does it need to appeal to all ages. In my opinion, all it takes for that is for the lyrics to be passable to decent, and for the song to have an "it factor." I don't think some of her recent songs have that and the ones that do, aren't being pushed by them. I loved XO, but it hardly got any promotion/radio play. Crazy in Love might not be typical r&b, but that song is almost 15 years old and if it comes on right now, I'm on my feet. Anyway, she reminded me again last night why I love her so, so I'm going to temporarily shelve my complaints and enjoy Bey season .
I mean the last line of her song :"You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation")
I am not a Bey stan either, but I'm here for all of the commotion she has created here. As always. I mean, all the twittering, frenzy, tweeting. All the people boycotting her because of the drowning cop car. All the natural hair in the video. All the fire. I didn't love the song the first time I heard it, but loved it by the third time, which is how I felt about Crazy in Love, too.

I love Bey. I need for her to go back to some lyrics that aren't quite as raunchy. If you can't make it into a Kids Bop song I will never be able to listen to it in the car. That being said I needed Flawless when I was separated. It was my pump myself up song while I walked into work so I could put on a good face. And of course NitaX, 123fif, summer, iammalcolmx and smo spent a good amount of time reminding me to tell exH his shit would be in a box to tha left lol.
And what are folks' ferelings hurt about? Because she sank on top of a police car at the end? We'll boycott that offense but can't understand why people may be a bit upset that unarmed men/boys/women/girls get rolled up on and shot, or barrel-rolled, or stomped on in the classroom. ALL that is understandable, but the music video? Yeah, that metaphor is such a problem!

I really liked this breakdown - 7 Reasons Beyoncé's "Formation" Music Video Is a Powerful Statement During Black History Month (in teen vogue nonetheless!)
i don't think either of them are very good singers...
but I would prefer a ballad from Alicia over Bey.
Listen, neither of them can "sang," or as my aunt would say, "Neither one is a real blower." But Beyonce can sing. She has a pleasant voice with a very respectable range. Her live singing is strong, too. Alicia Keys often sounds like a cat with a future serial killer hot on its heels. All that screeching and yelping and voice cracking. She can't sing, I'm sorry. She should probably stick to the piano and finding sleazy dudes with whom to have affairs. Ayyy!

The more times I watch that video, the more I find in it. I bet there won't be many places on a parade route tomorrow that you won't hear it. There are so many New Orleans layers.

Oh see Beyonce had a rough start with live performances. Back in 2004/5 (I can't remember b/c get off my lawn), her ass still had trouble singing and dancing at the same time. Alicia can sing dammit.
She's definitely a better performer (and actually, a better singer) than she was before. Alicia Keys can only do the same old two step. Also, I don't really talk about the way people look, but honestly her stubby arms do make me feel uncomfortable. I don't really understand them. And she cannot sing!

I'm late to this - but let me say this yet again - Bey makes her money and in Formation, she done told y'all, she earns it.
I couldn't understand the Beyonce hype either - UNTIL - I saw her in concert at Essence Fest. I respect the HELL out of Bey. Because the amount of work, dedication it takes to doing those damn dance moves and singing - because Miss Thang for damn sh' wasn't lip syncing is amazing. I saw her again in 2014 when she and Jay-Z went on tour. And if her damned tour dates aligned with my current summer schedule, I'd have my ass on the road to see her in Nashville.
Beyonce is what I consider to be a mixture of Tina Turner and Michael Jackson. She is the female version of that because her work ethic in the industry is probably up there with Prince. YES. I'm saying that.
I didn't care for her album with Diva on it. I hated most of that foolishness. But, Bey has cornered a market of every time she drops an album there are a few hits on it that become an Anthem. Let's highlight them shall we:
Ring the Alarm - This is that dis to wannabe ass women trying to go after your man. I was here for it. Me, Myself, and I Irreplaceable Crazy in Love Deja Vu Single Ladies Partition Who Run the World (Girls) Flawless
And now, Formation. And she and the squad were in ALL BLACK EVERYTHANG. I die. Yet I live. I am here for it.
Beyonce is a freaking force. She just is. The sooner folks accept that this woman STAYS finding a way to stay at the top of her game is amazing. Folks have come and gone, but Bey still is out here making shit that has you dancing.
