It is unreasonable when the bill is being footed by taxpayers.
Don't run for President if you aren't committed to everything that comes with the position.
Of everything to fault them on, i just cant get it up for this one.
I do think this is probably pretextual for the whole family not moving and that would/will make me angry, but a 10 year old finishing the school year just doesn't work me up.
This ain't about anyone being against the best interest of a child, stop with that nonsense.
I am personally enraged that tax money will be spent on accommodating his family's "needs" while he is talking about slashing basic need services and medical care options for other people's families.
I'm with you on this one. It was a long time ago, but I am pretty sure there was speculation that Michelle O would do this as well, and I had no issue then. I understand that ultimately the Obama girls did switch schools in January, but it wouldn't have bothered me if they didn't.
There is so, so much to be outraged about with a Trump presidency that this seems like small potatoes.
The only reason I'm enraged about it is what it's doing to businesses surrounding Trump Tower. It was relatively easy for the Obama's Chicago home to be secured to keep the first family safe, but being on 5th Avenue is a whole different ballgame. They're prone to all kinds of attack (including something along the lines of 9/11 given that his building is one of the tallest in the city and their home is the penthouse. Apparently shops on that block (which includes such big names as Tiffany) are reporting decreased foot traffic and sharply decreased sales as a result of the security mess. We need to keep the first family safe without a doubt, but putting a 10 year old's comfort above the livelihoods and jobs of many isn't acceptable.
I agree that all of this is terrible. But, it's temporary.
Of course, that's assuming they do move after they school year. Which I'll be angry if they don't.

I think that asking that of these people and businesses for over 6 months could be disastrous. Tiffany is a high profile company and will likely be able to weather it, but there are also bodegas and other very small businesses who could legitimately go out of business if they face 6+ months of greatly reduced foot traffic. It's understandable this this is unavoidable until January and the loss of the holiday foot traffic may cause smaller businesses to close before a January move date, but not to get out of their asap given what it's doing is so selfish.

But what I'm saying is that to me, the child is important. He didn't ask for this.
I'm not unsympathetic to cost arguments, but i think the cost for the few months this will be is probably small potatoes.
If you, or anyone else, has any actual dollar amounts to prove me wrong, I'm open to them.

Secret service costs aside, this is already creating massive financial and manpower strain on NYPD- the mayor is already asking for federal money to help with just the police officers needed for additional security needs now for the transition period, that isn't even looking at the increased costs when they are actually the First Family..
GTFO with "small potatoes" when the same monies could have been spent on social programs to help millions of other kids who didn't ask to be in their daily situations either.
It's just more evidence that Trump 1) believes he is a special snowflake and no usual protocol applies to him, and 2) Trump gives no fucks about how his choices affect the American people.

I obviously am going to seem way more invested in this than i really am.
I'm genuinely open to seeing actual dollar amounts that they'll cost taxpayers by Melania & Barron staying in NYC until the school year ends vs if they moved in January. Are they really astronomically higher? They will have Secret Service detail either way. I just don't buy that they are. I'm open to being proven wrong.

So without exact quotes for numbers you can't understand why it will cost additional money to secure a skyscraper and the surrounding blocks in NYC vs. one location (White House) in DC.
Plus the additional costs to NYC /NYPD that would not be incurred if they were primarily at the White House on a DAILY basis?
Yes, some stuff would be paid regardless (detail at school etc) but COME ON!
sure, this won't be the worst thing Trump does, but that doesn't make it "ok" either.
Are you seriously saying you feel comfortable paying for his child to stay comfortable at what will be at the expense of everyone else?
I have not seen dollar amounts but Mayor DeBlasio had a press conference where he talked about what it would take (and that he will be asking for federal funding to pay for it).

You can't be this naive
Your initial post to me was talking about the cost to taxpayers when he's talking about cutting aid, so that's all i was addressing.
So, yeah, if you're arguing that it's going to cost significantly more tax dollars for them to staying NYC, yes, a comparison of normal costs for DC vs additional for NYC would be helpful.

Isn't Trump Tower going to be a potential target regardless of whether Melania and Barron are there? Just the fact that Trump's name is on it makes it a target, and don't the other Trump kids work out of Trump Tower?

Seriously, the news was saying that this is the first time since the middle of the nineteenth century that a First Lady didn't follow her husband to the White House. And it had only happened twice ever. No modern president has done so and Trump is far from the only modern president with school aged children. Everyone else found a way to make it work.
And the truth is, this is and will continue to be a disruption to Barron's life. If he felt Barron couldn't or shouldn't have to live with the disruption of being a first child then he shouldn't have run in the first place. How can someone be expected to think ahead about the diverse needs of a huge country if he can't anticipate how being elected would impact his ten year old.

I think the difference here is that most, if not all, of the former Presidents with school-aged kids were career politicians who aspired to live in the WH with their families in the tradition of the American presidency. Trump does not see living in the WH as an honor -- he sees as a disruption. He can't have everything exactly as he wants it in the WH. He didn't build the WH to his specifications and liking. The WH staff doesn't know his likes and dislikes and they weren't hand-picked by him. The Obamas, Bushes, Carters, and Clintons left nice houses to live at the WH. The Trumps are basically leaving a palace, and Melania is going to have to go back to work at a job she doesn't get paid for. She doesn't see being FLOTUS as an honor -- she sees it as an infringement on her time.
I do think Melania is very protective of Barron and is worried about him being bullied if he isn't already, which is sad. That kid is going to have a rough four years ahead of him no matter where he goes to school.

This is going to go on at least until July (which isn't a few months, but half a year). It isn't just the cost to the taxpayer, but those businesses are going to lose out too.....including the loss of tax revenues during this time. As these are high profile expensive stores, a loss of tax revenue (especially during Christmas season) can be considerable.

I find it insulting that the first family would feel burdened by the job. If it's such a burden then he shouldn't serve, end of story. Finding what the job entails too much of a burden is something they should have considered and discussed before running.
And frankly, all Americans should be insulted that the first family doesn't have pride in representing the US. Laura Bush was a quiet First Lady who often stated out of the spotlight, but she had the grace, class and patriotism to not be public in her contempt of the citizens of this country.

Actually he can hire new White House staff. But they will be employees of the US government, not his employees. Which means he can't make them sign NDAs.
I suspect that's got at least as much to do with it as the whole "I can only shit on my own gold toilet" aspect of it.
Does the military usually wait to relocate a family until the end of the school year? I was under the impression that they do not. And Trump is going to be the commander of the armed forces. Why should the taxpayers be asked to pay the bill to handle Trump's dependents differently than those of the rest of the military? He ran for president. He enlisted.
It's just more evidence that Trump 1) believes he is a special snowflake and no usual protocol applies to him, and 2) Trump gives no fucks about how his choices affect the American people.
If there is one thing we should all learn about this nightmare is that Trump is actually being treated a special snowflake.
I don't know whether to thank you for sharing this extremely informative read, or yell at you for nearly sending me into cardiac arrest.
I cannot even with this. The cost to taxpayers, the disruption to the people and businesses of NYC, and just the million and one different ways all of this can go wrong. It is just absolutely galling to me. The nerve of this entitled piece of shit.
And let's be real. he's just not going to be the White House ever. This is all just a way for him to blur the lines between his company and the country.
The other thing I keep thinking about is that this asshole wants to do his "victory tour" of rallies. What will the security costs be for that crap, to keep it from turning into a riot? Are we supposed to pay for that shit from our tax dollars? Because no. I don't want to contribute to that idiocy.

LOL nope. Orders are issued when the military needs the service member to move. Now depending on finances and various factors some families will choose to split up and let the kids finish the year or what have you but it's pretty rare. My BFF's parents decided to keep her (and her sister) in school but it was our senior year and it was 2 months not half a year, so Mom basically stayed behind and wrapped things up then they moved. Most military families suck it up and move together when ordered. And it is shameful he doesn't value the Presidency more.

Not in my extensive experience. When they say go, you go when they say go. I can only remember one move that occurred (coincidentally) during the summer break.
And as Trump moves through the city, police need to close streets accordingly. For example, the Lincoln Tunnel was closed to traffic on Friday afternoon during rush hour when Trump traveled to New Jersey.
So what? He's just going to shut down the whole fucking city whenever he decides he wants a meatball sub and a back rub from Chris Christie?
