I think that you can change your last name once for free due to marriage, but any changes after that are subject to a fee. Maybe some states are different, not sure.

I wish you much peace.
I know a woman that got married and kept her maiden name, 2.5 years later changed it to her married name, 6 mos after that she changed it back to her maiden name (remained married). Then a few yrs after that she got divorced (& stayed with her maiden).
I suppose you could hyphenate or make up a combination/alternative name.

I kept my ex's name, because I don't like my maiden name, it's the same as DS's, and I didn't want the hassle. I agree with the others who said there's no wrong way to handle this. It sounds like you're doing well, good luck in this new chapter of your life.

My mom kept her married name because they had been married 16 years and she wanted to share my sister and I's last name still. I'm still deciding. Right now, I'm changing it but it makes me sort of sad that E and I won't have the same last name anymore. Which is silly, I know but feelings and shit.
Hugs and all that stuff. Divorce is hard. I hope you're doing okay.
I changed back, but we didn't have kids. My mom kept my dad's last name for 15 years after they divorced until I was about to get married and change my name anyway. But then I got divorced and went back to that name so joke's on you, Mom! Anyway, this way you get to avoid the conversation of:
"Oh you got married, congrats!" "Nope, opposite, but thanks!" :::awkward silence or stuttering:::
Yes! I've had that exact conversation at least three times since August. Seriously, no one should judge you for wanting to avoid this.
I changed mine back because no kids and I want nothing to do with him. Plus his name was 12 letters and my maiden is 6. BUT, changing it back has been a royal pain in my ass. If I ever get married again, I'm keeping my maiden name. I don't have the patience to do this again.
