Sean Astin has never been more attractive to me. If someone is going to spoil him, please be gentle.
My experience from a fan event is that he is basically the nicest person ever. And when he asked if the map led to treasure the whole room I was watching with screamed Goonies never say die!
I’m only on episode six but I fell over laughing at 4 puffs of the Farrah Fawcett spray. Please, please, please tell me we get to see Dustin show up to woo Max with his hair done up like Steve’s
I liked it a lot. Damn though Dustin was an idiot.
I was so sad about Sean Astin. His character was great, a nice addition.
So the gate - that was how the creatures got out into the "real world," right? the gate at the lab? and that gate was where Joyce and Hopper entered the upside down last season? Why did the creatures last season bring the victims to the upside down and keep some of them (like will) and this season they were all "KILL! EAT!"
I'm also not sure what the point of Max and her brother was....like I couldn't figure out what they brought to the storyline.
I think I liked this season better. I don't love the romantic vibe between the little kids though. I know they are in middle school but they all seem so babyish to me. Like I loved Dustin's moments with nancy and getting advice from Steve. I even liked Max and Lucas because it felt like it was building. But Eleven and Mike. I don't know. It felt organic/natural but also felt a little rushed since they hadn't spent much time together during the season. And they are babies! They are all babies. And she doesn't have much exposure to normal kid life/environment which may be why it bothers me. Anyway minor quibble/issue.
Dustin was so dumb but I do love his new friendship with Steve and getting tips. Steve redeemed himself this season.

Some thing auto played when we were done and we watched a little bit of it. It said the point was to have a human villain - I really liked Max's interactions with the rest of the cast but felt like her brother and their parents were just sort of plot driven characters who were just there to move the story along at points which I didn't like. Her brother was like a cartoon villain and I was waiting for something more significant about him besides giant asshole to pop up.

yeah I liked Max as a character, I just didn't feel like they added anything necessarily. H thought that they were going to tie into the lab somehow, since he thought the dad seemed military. But that didn't happen.

I thought so too. That there'd be something that tied them into the other storyline and why they moved there.
1) I liked the Max storyline. It created tension in the group. If the story was 4 best friends who always get along saved the world from monsters, it would have been boring. They needed that every day conflict to provide spice. Especially since Eleven was separate from the group for most of the season.
2) RE: the demogorgon taking people to the Upside Down to eat them, and this time just wholesale slaughter - The first season was just a tiny rift and we only saw the first forays into the Upside Down. It seemed like a lot because no one had encountered it before. This time we saw the full scope of what was happening. Basically, the first demogorgon was just one predator who had wandered through the rift.
I am with Pixy, I liked the Max story line. Part of the reason I love this show is because the kids are just so well cast and their dynamic is so well written. So I enjoyed the love triangle with Lucas and Dustin, and the jealousy and trust issues. The brother stuff was a bit over the top. But I do think it's good the show introduced some new characters and started to develop them, as it gives it more options for a third season.
On my next season wish list is for them to write more interesting scenes with Winona Ryder. I think she's really good in this role and I want to see more.
At our house we call Max's brother Scraggly Mullet.
We called him Randall Flagg.
The scene with him and Mike's mother did make me laugh. It as totally over the top and ridiculous, but also hilarious. Mike's parents killed me. Their kids were not home for like three days and they were just completely oblivious.

"Don't you know? Our children don't live here any more."

Not reading this thread yet because I've only got through episode 3 but dr Owens is the guy from Mad About You? I feel ancient. He looks so much older!!
Mike's parents are hilariously great 80s parents. Not a fucking clue...
I loved Lucas's sister, too. She's the best.
I liked Max quite a lot. I felt like her own story and her brother were just shoehorned in there and seemed to imply some other connection or backstory but really he just was an asshole, with an asshole dad. Keep Max, ditch brother. I think she could have been introduced to the group without the brother/backstory and just being a new kid in town, because I felt like she added something to the group.
Unsure about the Chicago episode though and any of those characters. Assuming 8 will pop up again otherwise...I don't really know the point of all of that. I'm also definitely unsure about what Max's brother brings to the show, however the scene with him and Mike's mom was hilarious.
Dustin and his mom are adorable. Poor Mews!
And alright, I was really hoping they'd find Barb hibernating or something in the upside down. I don't even care how ridiculous that sounds.
I heard there are only going to be 4 seasons total?
Max's brother looks like a cross between Chad Lowe and Zac Efron.
And I don't know that his character was that over the top (aside from that weird bit with Mike's mom). His extreme tough guy act can be a hallmark of physical abuse, and given that one scene with his dad, that doesn't seem like much of a leap.

I think they held on to that reveal too long. If it had been early on, then it would have seemed less like it was building to something more nefarious or connected to the main storyline.

I agree completely. My H and I actually have a pet theory that the dad is somehow involved with the military that has now taken over the lab. All of this is pretty much based entirely on his high and tight haircut 😂 and the thought that they've had to introduce Max's family for a reason.

He does look so much older! It is the same guy, Paul Reiser.
