Seriously the mind trip of this week's episode. Part of me wants to stop watching because it makes me want to scream. But I want to know what happens next week.
I've been debating quitting watching.. it's just so dark and depressing. And bleak. Why am I doing that to myself? I feel like each episode is the emotional equivalent of showing you a cute, fuzzy little kitten and then stomping it with a boot.
I read on Vox this was the first episode (or maybe one of very few) that didn't do flashbacks.
Poor June. She was ready to let that baby go to save it from this mess, but I think we've seen her come back to life, compared to the end of episode 4.
I'm far more interested in what's happening in Canada (and the rest of the world) than the Colonies.
I found it strange that Emily pointed out to Janine that they took her eye. They took her fucking baby! And how Janine all of a sudden respects Aunt Lydia. What the what now?
does anyone remember from the book if the handmaid's basically serve their time as a handmaid and then....they are freed? To be econowives maybe? I can't remember. We haven't seen what happens to a handmaid after they have a child other than Janine and she went off the deep end so that doesn't count.
Just can't remember if they are moved to another household and if it's like have 3 babies then you are free or something like that.
Also how young do you think the child brides were in this episode?! They looked like 14. Maybe as soon as they start menstruating they are paired off? And how do they decide which ones become wives and which ones become handmaids?

I was wondering that too. I honestly don't remember. Which is kind of bad since I read the book for the 3rd time like 6 months ago. I don't think it's addressed except to say that they'll never be declared unwoman.

They looked really young. I would guess they would have to be menstruating though, since Serena said something to her at their house about how it is her duty to have children. They all looked so young that I was afraid for minute that Nick's bride was going to be Hannah, although I know she's only like 6.
So are these brides and grooms econopeople or a different classification since they work for the government? It seemed like they were low/mid level government though.

I need some direction because watching throughout her pregnancy with flashes to the colonies is depressing without some kind of potential escape or uprising brewing.
My DH also thought Serena Joy was played by Portia de Rossi. That is so weird so many people think it's her! And I feel a little bad for Yvonne Strahovsky.
Tidbit! I just googled YS and she's pregnant with her first child....lol if she was filming HT right now.
I liked the scenes with the rabbi and her saying kaddish for the woman who died. I also liked the colonies wedding scene. They reminded me of the Holocaust of the small acts of rebellion of celebrating life and continuing to embrace spiritual traditions that are now forbidden.
How did she get outside? Did she jump out the window or something? Or just walk? I was so confused.
If she jumped, June would have been in much worse shape. She didn’t have any bruises or scratches in the hospital. I think she was trying to run again- Nick’s marriage brought her back to reality.

I don't think it was Nick's marriage. I think it was her thinking she was losing the baby and realizing that she would no longer be protected.
ETA: I think Nick's marriage further broke her vs. brought her back to reality.

I thought she fell? She had been off balance a few times in the episode (probably due to blood loss). I am sure Serena and crew will assume she jumped and she’s going to be monitored even more now.

(I just wanted to let you guys know it’s now personally MORTIFYING to watch Yvonne Strahovski & recall my dumbass Portia error. Like in every scene I want to bury my head in a pillow. I hope the feeling only lasts an episode or two...😋)

Her bedroom is in the attic. If she either jumped or fell out of a third floor window she would be extremely banged up, bruised, and had some broken bones, if not worse. She must have been wandering around outside and fainted. She might have been disoriented which would explain why she was wandering around, but there is no way she could have fallen out her bedroom window and been in as good shape as she was in the hospital.

Also she can't open the windows in her bedroom right? I guess they could have been broken or something.

That's right, I forgot about that. If she really was trying to escape she could have broken them, but then she'd be all cut up, in addition to major bruising and broken bones.

I watched last night. I think they are going to go with the disorientation angle and probably bedrest b/c she was bleeding and because of how Serena reacts in the hospital so relieved. Plus, I read somewhere that the actress who plays Serena has been directed to have these conflicting emotions of regret and anger since she has an unrealized anger at herself for what her life has become and how blatant she was in the formation of her subservient role in society.
That being said, EWWW to the child bride for Nick and all those other Guardians. That bride is so young and I am going to be so disappointed when he just takes on his role as husband to her.
But to have Rita care and show that she does her job effectively, while still being empathetic to June was good acting IMO. I want to see more of her.
We finally watched episode 2 tonight and Emily’s backstory absolutely wrecked me. I’m actually not sure I’ve ever responded to something on film so emotionally, at least not something fictional.
I’m scared to go to bed now because I’m sure I’ll have nightmares. There were moments watching where it just felt entirely too plausible. In my airport, where I go all the time. I was barely breathing.
I did love that Clea DuVall was like a little queer Easter egg that mostly only my queer friends noticed. <3
Hulu offered me a free month even though I’m a returning account. I’m just now catching up!
I’d have died if Cathy Moriarty had played the role Marisa Tomei snagged. Then all I’d need is for her to cry “But I’m a Commander’s Wife!” and there’d have been no helping me.
Last week's episode was one of the darkest ones so far for me. I think maybe because it did such a good job of pulling me into June's mindset. I WANTED her to miscarry that baby. Which is a chilling feeling (maybe moreso as someone who is IF? I dunno). I wanted the miscarriage to wipe those smug smiles right off the Commander and Serena Joy's faces after they pulled that sickening stunt against those men and all those poor little girls for purely their own benefit. I wanted them to think that they made June upset enough that she lost the baby. I was disappointed when I realized the baby survived. How fucked up is that?
Yet I'm glad to see the old, fighter June back. I want Nick to stay a fighter too. They need each other.

Do the Waterfords know that the Commander is not the father? And that Nick is the father? There are times it seems they know but other times…Serena realizes her husband is sterile, right?
